9 Story Entertainment and Skywriter Media ink a deal under which 9 Story acquires two kid-targeted animated series from Skywriter, Camp Lakebottom, produced for Teletoon Canada, and Vivi, which is a co-production with Brazil’s Mixer for TVO (Canada). The deal will see 9 Story Entertainment take over all production and distribution for both series.
- Camp Lakebottom (52×11) is a comedy about 12 year-old, mastermind McGee and the worst summer camp in the world, where the cabins are possessed, the lake is toxic, the forest creatures are mutants, the counselors are a danger to themselves and others, and the kids are having the best time ever. The series is stated to debut on Teletoon Canada in 2013.
- Vivi (52×11) follows the adventures of 7-year-old Vivi who travels to exotic places with her Grandma Rosa, a famous photojournalist. Vivi captures what she learns in her Memory Book, which provides the series a multi- platform outlet to connect and interact with viewers.
Zinkia Entertainment appoints Bentex Group as the Master Apparel Partner in the US market for its preschool brand Pocoyo. Under the multi-year agreement, Bentex will create a line of Pocoyo apparel for both boys and girls that will include t-shirts, sportswear, sleepwear, swimwear and outerwear. The Pocoyo apparel line is currently slated to debut at retail in spring 2013. Zinkia recently inked a deal with Random House Children’s Books for its flagship property, Pocoyo, in the US, and also continues with it other partners in the market that include Bandai America, NCircle Entertainment and TCG. Pocoyo can be seen in the US on Nick Jr., Nickelodeon’s 24-hour commercial-free preschool network, Univision, and select PBS Stations.
Tele Images, part of Zodiak Kids, and the National Basketball Association (NBA) are teaming up to launch an exclusive collection of co-branded youth merchandise based on the kid-targeted TV series The Basketeers (26×30), which is produced by UK-based I Can Fly and Tele Images can be see in France on M6 and Disney XD. The product line will feature the animated teen characters from The Basketeers, which also features NBA/San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker as their coach, as well as NBA team logos. The merchandise will first launch in France and will roll-out worldwide.
The LEGO Group and Lucasfilm have renewed their long-running Star Wars licensing deal for 10 more years. The initial deal to create LEGO toys based on the Star Wars universe was inked in 1999, also marking the first time that LEGO featured a character not their own in its construction toy line. In those first twelve years, 340+ LEGO Star Wars models have been developed, as well as 425 Star Wars minifigures, four cross-platform video games, a range of books, and an animated TV special, to name a few things, all based on the Star Wars movies and the animated TV series Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Mega Brands is featuring its new line-up of Mega Bloks preschool construction toys at the Toy Fair. This fall 2012 the company will introduce its Mega Bloks First Builders for kids 1+ as part of Mega Bloks first block products that feature a new graphic look and new characters. The preschool line includes Mega Bloks Lil’ Princess collection, a Mega Play building collection with castles and houses for kids 2+, Whirl n’ Twirl Ride-Ons, and collections based on licensed properties such as the new Hello Kitty and Moshi Monsters lines.
Saban Brands and Blip Toys introduce the new Power Rangers Samurai Squinkies, which are based on Power Rangers Samurai Rangers and villains, this week at Toy Fair. Initially launched in 2010, new this year to the Squinkies line is the Squinkies Boys! collection, featuring hundreds of collectible figures and expanded assortment of play accessories. Squinkies are 1-inch squishy, squashy collectible toys that each come in their own bubble container. The collectible Power Rangers Samurai Squinkies are available now.
Jakks Pacific debuts the new toy line based on the animated franchise Monsuno (www.monsuno.com) this week at Toy Fair. The Monsuno toy line features kid-controlled action figures, accessories, combat sets, die-cast metal cores based on the monster creatures in the series, collectibles, electronics and integrated role-play products.
Oregon Scientific enters into a licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Consumer Products, granting it the rights to create a new line of Scooby-Doo electronic learning toys that will include kids laptops and handheld devices. Designed to give kids a head start in both the tech world and at school, the portable, drop-proof products feature interactive Scooby-Doo activities that reinforce vocabulary, logic, numbers, memory and creativity. Set for release in summer 2012, the new products include, Scooby-Doo Magic Laptop (kids 4+), Scooby-Doo Secret Learner – a handheld device (kids 3+), and Scooby-Doo Mystery Learner, a junior-sized laptop featuring a key chain accessory that unlocks games (kids 3+). The new line is being shown this week at American International Toy Fair.
Imangi Studios, developers of the Temple Run game for iPhone and iPad, has appointed Dimensional Branding Group (DBG) as Temple Run’s exclusive licensing agency for representation of the Temple Run intellectual property. Under the deal, DBG will look to establish branded merchandise entertainment extensions. DBG will work directly with Imangi co-founders Natalia Luckyanova and Keith Shepherd.
Sprout launches its new The Super Sproutlet Show, a daily two-hour interactive programming block designed to encourage preschoolers and their families to make healthy living choices, today Tuesday, February 14, 2012, 2-4p. The Super Sproutlet Show is hosted by LazyTown‘s star action hero Sportacus, and Sprout’s newest original character Bean, a blue-haired 12-year-old girl who lives in the real world and bikes across the country in search of everyday Sproutlets (aka regular preschoolers) who are active, healthy and being good to the earth. The online component of the show invites parents and kids to visit SproutOnline.com (www.sproutonline.com) to play new games and upload videos of their preschoolers performing their moves of the day.
Disney Junior orders a third season of its animated series Jake and the Never Land Pirates. Produced by Disney Television Animation, the series airs daily during Disney Channel’s Disney Junior programming block and will also be featured on the new 24-hour Disney Junior channel that is set to launch in the US on Friday, March 23, 2012. In addition to the animated TV series, Jake and the Never Land Pirates is featured in the Disney Junior Live on Stage! attraction at Disney Parks & resorts, as well as in Disney Junior magazine, and has its own soundtrack and DVD from Disney Studios, with show specific products from Disney Consumer Products set to launch in spring 2012.
Nickelodeon will premiere the new Power Rangers season, Power Rangers Super Samurai, this Saturday, February 18, at 12n. New episodes of the 19th season of the Saban Brands’ series will continue to debut Saturdays at noon.
Nicktoons will debut the new animated Monsuno (52×30) series with two back-to-back half-hour episodes on Thursday, February 23, at 8p. The series will then move to its regular Nicktoons timeslot on Thursdays at 8:30p. Monsuno will also air on Nickelodeon channels around the world starting summer 2012. Jakks Pacific is the creator of the underlying Monsuno property and master toymaker for the Monsuno toy line. The Topps Company has signed on to produce Monsuno trading card games, confectioneries and related products. The Monsuno series is co-produced by Pacific Animation Partners, a joint venture between Jakks Pacific and Dentsu Entertainment USA, with FremantleMedia Enterprises and The Topps Company. FremantleMedia Enterprises is the exclusive worldwide distributor of Monsuno TV programming, excluding Asia, and also serves as the master licensing agent for the brand outside of Asia.
Kid’s publisher Alligator Books establishes Alligator Creative Play, a new division under which the company will publish creative play apps for kids based on its solely owned and third party licensed content. Alligator Creative Play’s first app is Me to You, debuting this month, features the Tatty Teddy character behind the Me to You brand, brought together by AT New Media. Developed by FairPlay Media’s studio, Gusto Games (I-Spy games for Nintendo Wii and DS, among others), the Me to You app will include various creative play tasks including coloring, sticker creation and scene making activities. Alligator Books has also signed a number of other licenses, and will announce the launch of further licensed and generic apps by the end of 2012. Alligator Books reports that is has made a “significant upfront investment” in launching the new division and in the development of its first apps.

Vancouver-based Nerd Corps Entertainment names Juli Boylan as the head of its new Consumer Products division. First up for Boylan is to create a merchandising program for Nerd Corps’ new 3D animated HD action series Slugterra (39×22, and 39×1-min Slugisodes), which will launch this fall on Disney XD. The company expects to announce a major toy deal for the property soon. Boylan is at Toy Fair in NYC this week looking for additional toy, publishing, interactive and other long lead category partners to begin with, followed by secondary categories. Prior to this, Boylan was SVP/Global Licensing for Sony Consumer Products, managing franchises including Spider-Man and Ghostbusters. She also previously served with Warner Bros. Consumer Products working brands including Looney Tunes and the Batman films. Rounding out the Consumer Products team and working with Boylan on the global launch strategy and product development side is Nerd Corps Director of Licensing and Marketing, Nancy Lees.
