Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 4, 2012, and this is your first early morning briefing.

New Zealand’s Pukeko Pictures (The WotWots, Jane and the Dragon) and China-based Grand Entertainment team to collaborate on the new 3D animated/puppet preschool TV series, Apple Dog’s Adventure (200×10). The series has already be pre-sold to Kaku Satellite TV (China), and will also be seen on CCTV (China) and other TV channels in the region. The first 52×10 episodes are slated to be available in first half of 2013. Based on a series of popular Chinese books, Apple Dog’s Adventure follows the adventures of small dog with a magical apple that grows on the end of his tail with stories about living and playing safely. Pukeko Pictures and Grand Entertainment will also work with the Animation School of the Beijing Film Academy, which all together established the International Animation Technology Joint Research Center to promote the development of animated projects. On the heels of their success with the Pukeko Pictures’ TV series, The WotWots, Grand Entertainment is also producing the educational app, Love To Learn With The WotWots.

LICENSING

The pop group One Direction is getting their scent. The boy band has inked a license partnership with Olivann Beauty, a spin-off of Fusion Brands Luxury Fragrance Division, to debut their signature fragrance in 2013. Under the agreement, Olivann Beauty will be responsible for all marketing to support the fragrance launch, as well as directing global sales and distribution efforts.

Spain-based Imira Entertainment appoints Planeta Junior as its licensing and merchandising agent in France and French-speaking Europe for Kumis. Created seven years ago by Spain’s La Habitacion de Nekane, Kumis is a youth-targeted property that features four small geishas, a Buddha and a ninja, each colorful with distinct personalities mixing traditional and modern Japanese-inspired (an emphasis on the 1960s) style. The Kumis characters are popular on Facebook and online, while Kumis-related products (e.g. figurines, plush, bags, pencil cases and housewares) are particularly popular with females of all ages and are available in 30+ countries. Imira represents the brand in Europe where it aims to expand Kumis into other product categories and new markets.

MARKETING

Kidz Bop and Burger King are partnering for a branded BK Kids Meal promotion aimed at K5-12 in the US and Canada. Running now through mid-January, 2013, the promotion features one of five custom Kidz Bop CDs (3 songs on each) with every BK Kids Meal, while supplies last. The promotion coincides with the release of Kidz Bop 23 on January 15, 2013. Additionally, beginning this week, kids can enter The Kidz Bop BK Crown Dance Off Super Contest (www.kidzbop.com/contest/Kidzbop/the-kidz-bop-bk-crown-dance-off-super-contest).

MORE KIDS STUFF

WWE wrestler John Cena will host the Vortexx on The CW (www.myvortexx.tv), the Saturday morning programming block  dubbed Cena Saturday – this Saturday, December 8, 8:30-10:30a. The block will also feature a special episode of WWE Saturday Morning Slam at 10a, which will feature a face-off between Cena and another WWE wrestler Heath Slater. The morning lineup will also feature episodes of Power Rangers Lost Galaxy, Sonic X, Dragon Ball Z, Justice League Unlimited and Yu-Gi-Oh! Zexal. Vortexx on The CW is an affiliate of Saban Brands.

Nickelodeon acquires the Entertainment One Family’s (eOne Family) the CGI animated special Lost and Found. The acclaimed half-hour special will premiere on Nickelodeon in the US this month, as in addition to airing on its channels in the UK and Australia. Based on the picture book by author/illustrator Oliver Jeffers, Lost and Found is narrated by Jim Broadbent (an noted British actor known well by kids for his role as Prof. Horace Slughorn in the Harry Potter movies, as well as other movies and TV series) and was produced by Studio AKA. The story revolves around a young boy who finds a penguin on his doorstep, and becomes determined to do whatever it takes to help the penguin make his way home.

Alphanim completes sales for several of its animated series to the premium subscription channel Starz in the US, as well as with networks around the world.
– Further Alphanim’s relationship with Starz (US), the channel acquires the animated eco-travel/adventure series The Green Squad (52×13), the second season of the animated adventure/comedy Gawayn (52×13), and the comic book-based comedy Toto Trouble (52×13). Starz already airs Alphanim series such as Santa’s Apprentice, Hairy Scary, Zombie Hotel, Matt’s Monsters and season one of Gawayn.
– Alphanim’s other newly inked sales around the world include: ABC Australia acquires Gawayn II (52×13); Disney Channel in South Korea picks up Mouss & Boubidi (52×1); Megamax (Czech Republic, Slovakia) acquires all three seasons of Galactik Football (78×26); MTV3 (Finland) renewed the rights for the Christmas series Santa’s Apprentice (52×13).

DHX Media signs new programming new deals and renewals across Asia for a number of kid-targeted series in its library. DHX Media will attend to Asia Television Forum (ATF) this week with a slate including the new series Monster Math Squad and SheZow! Targeted to kids/tweens 8-12, SheZow! was created by Obie Scott Wade and produced by Australia’s Moody Street Kids and LA-based Kickstart Productions for Channel 10. The series has also presold to ABC Australia.
– New deals include: Discovery Networks Asia Pacific picks up Inspector Gadget’s Last Case and Inspector Gadget’s Biggest Caper Ever, as well as the series Gadget Boy; PCCW‘s now TV (Hong Kong) acquires both seasons of new preschool series Monster Math Squad; SkyAsia Media Indonesia takes both seasons of Pirates, Adventures in Art and the first season of Urban Vermin; NTV (Japan) picks up Super Duper Sumos and Sherlock Holmes in the 22nds Century; True Visions (Thailand) takes the fourth season of Super Why!; Quickflix (Australia and New Zealand) takes the SVOD rights to several titles; TV New Zealand acquires the feature Bonjour Timothy.
– Renewal deals include: Cartoon Network in Japan renews several Madeline titles; Mediacorp Singapore takes seasons four and five of Johnny Test; Disney Channel Asia renews the first two seasons of Animal Mechanicals; and Disney Channel India re-ups for Kid vs. Kat.

The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, announced nominations for its 40th Annual Annie Awards, which recognizes the best in animation. The Annie Awards is comprised of 30 categories across TV, movie, short subjects and individual achievement, as well as juried awards that honor career achievement and exceptional contributions to the world of animation. Leading the way with ten nods each are three feature films – Disney-Pixar‘s Brave, DreamWorks Animation‘s Rise of the Guardians and Disney‘s Wreck-It Ralph. The inners will be announced at the 40th Annual Annie Awards ceremony on Saturday, February 2, 2013 at UCLA’s Royce Hall, in LA. Scholastic News Kids Press Corps welcomes 16 new kid reporters to its ranks.  All between the ages of 10-14, the new reporters join the 17 returning kid journalists. Together the 33 Kid Reporters come from 23 states in the US and one from Canada. These reporters cover real stories  including everything from politics and other breaking news to entertainment and sports – both locally and nationally. The new reporters were selected by the Scholastic News Kids Press Corps editors from 200+ student applications.
