Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 4, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
The National Hockey League and NHL Players’ Association are making one more go at it as owners and players will meet face-to-face today in a move to make headway in CBA negotiations. Six owners will attend, including Ron Burkle of the Penguins and Jeremy Jacobs of the Bruins, as well as a number of players. The move was suggested by federal mediators last week as another way to gain traction before the entire season gets scrapped.
Turner Sports and HBO Sports are both climbing in the ring to present Charles & Reggie: Toe to Toe with Manny Pacquiao on TNT on Thursday. The half-hour special will run right after the network’s NBA coverage and feature analysts and NBA Hall of Famers Charles Barkley and Reggie Miller spending a day with Manny Pacquiao at the gym in Hollywood, Calif., where he is training for his upcoming fight for Saturday’s HBO PPV. The program will see Miller joining Pacquiao on his morning run through Griffith Park in Los Angeles, Barkley spending time with Pacquiao’s Hall of Fame trainer, Freddie Roach, and Barkley and Miller dropping in on one of Pacquiao’s intense training sessions.
John Kruk is joining ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball as an analyst next season where he will take on the role vacated by Terry Francona last season. Kruk leaves his role as studio analyst on the network’s Baseball Tonight and will now team up with Dan Shulman and analyst Orel Hershiser in the booth. The trio is also joined by reporter Buster Olney.
Red Bull Media House signed former X Games host Sal Masekela to a multi-year extension to serve as the voice of a number of global sports properties and US television programs produced by the company. This past year, Masekela hosted 35 hours of the Red Bull Signature Series on NBC Sports, he will continue to be the definitive face of the property. In addition, he will also begin producing and developing properties within RBMH as well as work with him on music endeavors.
Universal Sports Network is moving out of LA. The network is relocating its production and broadcast operations to Denver, Colorado in the new year where it will partner Comcast Media Center (CMC) as its local partner to provide studio production facilities, linear master control origination and distribution services. Universal Sports will be fully operational at the CMC on January 1, 2013 and will create 44 new jobs in the area.
ESPN announced the presenters for this year’s Home Depot College Football Awards, held Thursday night at 7:30p on the flagship. Presentations include nine National College Football Awards Association player awards, the Home Depot Coach of the Year Award and The Disney Spirit Award. Presenters will include four College Football Hall of Fame inductees and four former The Home Depot College Football Award winners including Steve Largent, David Pollack, Ray Guy and Barry Switzer.
Saturday night’s Nets/Heat matchup scored as the most-watched and highest-rated regular season Nets telecast ever on YES Network, averaging 158,000 households and a 2.15 average TV HH rating in the New York DMA. That breaks a record held since 2004. The channel has averaged a 1.0 TV HH rating for its Nets telecasts this season, vs. a .39 average TV HH rating for its 22 Nets telecasts through the end of January 2012.
The New York Jets are extending their ties to ESPN New York via a multi-year extension. ESPN New York 98.7 FM will continue to offer coverage of every Jets game including pre, play-by-play and post-game programming. The station will also continue its Jets-focused features including the Jets Player Spotlight and Inside the Jets. Jets games, including pre and post-game coverage, are also broadcast in Spanish on ESPN Deportes Nueva York 1050AM.
David Beckham’s MLS finale, where he won the MLS Cup in Saturday’s league title game drew a 0.7 in overnight ratings for ESPN, according to Nielsen. That is off 12% from last year’s coverage featuring the same two teams (and the same victor).
Salt Lake City is looking to make a bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics, according to Reuters, with Utah Governor Gary Herbert stating that the state is “ready, willing and able” to host the event. The city previously hosted the Winter Games in 2002. The IOC is not expected to select a site, however, until 2019.
Comcast SportsNet Chicago named Kevin Cross as the channel’s News Director where he will will supervise the network’s daily news operation and news staff, which will include overseeing CSN’s locally-produced sports news and talk shows. Cross previously served as Assistant News Director at Comcast SportsNet Chicago since 2006.

After a successful launch in 2011, ESPN Consumer Products is bringing back the ESPN Bowl Championship Apparel by adidas, offering apparel and headwear that include men’s and women’s tees, hoodies and headwear for all of the BCS bowl participants as well as a Championship graphic for the five bowl winners. LeBron James was named Sports Illustrated’s Sportsman of the Year. The magazine announced its annual choice Monday, with James becoming the first NBA player to win the award since Dwyane Wade in 2006. SPEEDOUSA and USA Swimming inked a new sponsorship agreement that expires in 2020, according to Swimming World, that will keep SpeedoUSA as the team’s official sponsor, but will eliminate the brand’s exclusivity in the technical equipment arena. USA Swimming will now offer non-exclusive base sponsorships that include the use of the term “Official Sponsor” of USA Swimming and the rights to use USA Swimming’s marks on the sponsor’s products in certain categories.
The USA TODAY Sports Media Group is re-branding sports image service US Presswire to USA TODAY Sports Images. The move comes as part of the larger content syndication strategy for USA TODAY Sports which includes expanding the distribution of all of its content across multiple platforms.
Global soccer site ESPNFC is expanding its reach, with enhancements that include the launch of TransferCenter, a digital destination designed to offer fans a real-time catalogue and multimedia connection to the stories, rumors, updates and player transfer news in leagues worldwide during the run-up to, and throughout, the winter transfer window. Other initiatives include a new free multi-device, multi-screen Windows 8 app, and the launch a half a dozen new blogs in the coming weeks.
