Good morning. It’s Tuesday, December 20th, 2011, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!

The holidays are upon us and for many, that mean times of joy and spending time with loved ones.  But for too many of us, way too many, it’s a time of despair.  Especially for those who despite endless attempts and tremendous effort, are still unemployed.

This time of year can be a nightmare if things aren’t going well, and seeing others so happy and involved in celebration only makes it worse. 

If you let it.

Sitting home, knowing that companies don’t hire during the Holidays and feeling sad and lost, it’s all so easy.  But if you are thinking or feeling that way, I’m telling you that you are wrong and things are not as bad as they seem.

First, take part in the all Holiday festivities you can, go sing songs, go dance the dances and most importantly, be with people, I promise, you’ll feel better.

Secondly, send out those resumes with wild abandon.  Because companies do hire during the Holiday season and because people think they don’t, your resumes will get more attention.

Everybody is really good at something, and average at most things.  Take stock in what you’re good at, and SELL IT!  You have to take stock in yourself because if you don’t, no one else will. 

You also have to forgive yourself.  That may sound strange but most people who have been unemployed over a year, feel guilt.  Forgive yourself.  There are people with law degrees looking to get hired at Walmart.  Forgive yourself.

No two days are alike, and tomorrow will be either better or worse than today.  But the secret is that most days, it’s up to you.

~ ACTIONABLE EXPERT ADVICE ~
First person or Third Person in Resumes

OK this is a controversial one. Goodness me a lot of hot air and opinion and conformity and so-called best practice rules and heaven knows what else surround the topic of resumes. But still there are so many dreary, uniform, uninformative and obfuscatory resumes in the world.

I know, I know, you want to optimize your resume for search engines  well go ahead and do that and let the matching begin  good luck with that.  Let me know how it goes. 

But when there is going to be a human being involved, appeal to their humanity.  Most often they are looking not just for someone who can do the job but also for someone they can face running into at the salad bar.

They are looking for a person who can rock the job.  So be a person. Show some humanity in your resume so that the reader will think  this person has such great energy and passion.  They should get a feeling that you like what you do and are proud of your achievements.  They should want to meet you.  Wouldn’t that be nice?!

I’ve been asked whether it’s acceptable to write a summary for one’s resume in the first person or should it be in the third.  As far as I’m concerned the answer is whatever makes sense, feels comfortable and communicates what you want to communicate.  Here is the response I recently gave a senior executive who asked if it was acceptable for him to use the first person:

“It is acceptable to me. I believe it is more engaging to a reader – implies more passion and commitment on your part.  After all you are presenting yourself. It makes it more active, less passive.  Makes me feel there’s a person in there.”

The response from that executive was: I think you nailed the issue: how will it be perceived? Historically i have always looked at it from the perspective that it’s just business, not personal. So I’ve always removed that kind of stuff… but then I haven’t been hitting it out of the park lately so it’s time to try something different.”

So don’t give in to conformity if that doesn’t convey who you are.  And do remember that if there is a person reading the resume then they are likely to be seeing very many almost identical resumes – all conforming to some imaginary set of rules.  Be the standout: whether in the first person or third, be the person who moves them to action.

How many jobs changes can one have before a red flag goes up?

No given number if otherwise your story makes sense.  But too many changes could make the reader’s head spin as she tries to figure you out.  As a hirer I would want to see that you have progressed.  I would want to see the relevance, the narrative, in your choices.  If it just looks like a lot of lateral, random or desperate moving I would probably reach for that red flag.  If I am hiring for the long haul, and you do seem to be the right choice for me, I will want to know why all the moves, and your story had better be good.  Not just from you but from references from your previous managers.

I haven’t had to update my resume in 10 years. What has changed?

A lot has changed  there’s lots to learn.  It is not just the resumes that have changed, but the job titles, channels and systems.  If you are in the media and entertainment sector, then almost everything has changed in the business, so you will probably have to describe your results, skills and experience in a different way from your 2001 resume.

The experience that was relevant 10 years ago may not be so today  so revisit all those old job descriptions and successes and reframe them to address the current conditions.  If they are about buggy whips or carbon paper, consider dropping them.

Put your resume on LinkedIn.  Investigate and understand the way search engines have changed the recruiting and resume field before you update.  They will be searching for key words and titles and brands, so make sure they are in there.

~ RECAP: THIS WEEK IN EXECUTIVE MOVES ~

Global TV production and distribution company, Shankly Entertainment based in Beverly Hills, added Lee Ettinger as SVP/Head of Worldwide Distribution. Lee will manage all worldwide sales of the company’s library of 2,500+ hours of television content. He will report to David E. Brenner, CEO. Lee previously worked for Trillian Entertainment, a subsidiary of Media 8 Entertainment as Head/Distribution.

Lars Bastholm was hired as CCO of the new Cheil USA as announced by Buz Sawyer, President/CEO of Cheil  The Americas. Beginning January 2, Lars will work in tandem with Dave Weaver, President of Cheil’s One Agency to re-launch this division as Cheil Worldwide’s new US company Cheil USA. Dave will become CEO at Cheil USA. Both Lars and Dave will report to Buz and be based in New York.

Effective immediately, Ben Hill was appointed as SVP/Market Manager for CBS Radio Tampa. Ben rejoined CBS Radio in October 2010 and most recently was heading the company’s station group in West Palm Beach. Ben will continue managing the West Palm Beach stations until a replacement is named.

NCM Media Networks promoted Rebecca Eldridge to the newly-created position as VP/Entertainment Marketing with National CineMedia’s NCM Media Networks. In her new role, Rebecca will head all entertainment marketing and partnerships for the company’s multiple cinema advertising platforms. Rebecca has been with NCM Media Networks since 2006 and she will continue to report to the company’s SVP/Marketing, Michael Eaton.

Current TV tapped Mark Berniker as Executive Producer of The War Room With Jennifer Granholm. Mark previously served as Senior News Director at Bloomberg TV.

Raul Rodriguez will become VP/GM of Univision, San Francisco as announced by Univision Communications. In his new job, Raul will manage local news, programming, advertising sales, marketing, on-air promotion and community relations for the company’s radio and TV stations as well as interactive platforms in the San Francisco market. Located in San Francisco, Raul will report to Luis Patino, SVP/Univision Television Group and Peter M. Moore, SVP/Western Regional Manager, Univision Radio.

Melissa Schneider joins My Damn Channel as Director/Production . Melissa will be involved with producing more than 30 new original series in the coming months in addition to being the lead producer for My Damn Channel: Live launching in first quarter 2012 on YouTube.

Effective January 1, Manuel Abud moves up to President/Telemundo Station Group with Telemundo Media where he will report to Emilio Romano, President, Telemundo Media. Manuel will replace Ronald Gordon who was named Chairman at ZGS Communications which owns and operates the largest group of independent stations affiliated with the Telemundo network. Prior to this appointment, Manuel was President/GM of Telemundo Dallas KXTX.

Dave Lory was tagged as VP/Talent and Client Relations at PAID Inc. Dave will be involved with the company’s expanding celebrity services practice.

Rob LaPlante was appointed SVP/Development at Lighthearted Entertainment, Inc., the production company behind such series as Extreme Makeover, NEXT and The Moment of Truth. Lighthearted also upped Jeff Spangler to VP/Development up from Director/Development.

Scripps Networks Interactive tapped Jim Samples as President/International. Most recently, Jim served as President of HGTV and he will now provide oversight of the company’s burgeoning international programming offerings. He will report to Joseph G. NeCastro, Chief Financial and Administrative Officer. In this position, Jim succeeds Grey Moyer who will remain with the company as a consultant to the international group. Furthermore, Bob Baskerville was promoted to COO/International up from GM to head all daily operations of the company’s global businesses.

ABC Sales elevated four within its precincts: Doug Hochstadt, David Mayber and Tom Watson will all take on new roles as SVPs/ABC Sales and Marco Forte was upped to VP . Specifically, Doug will become SVP/Planning and Proposals; David as SVP/Central Division; Tom as SVP/Team Leader; and Marco as VP/Primetime Sales.

Philadelphia-based Red Tettemer + Partners hired four new executives: Kelly Goldenberg will become Media Director in charge of traditional media planning and buying on behalf of all clients; John Cruz was tagged as Senior Designer; Susan Schneider is the agency’s new Art Director to head concept, art direction and design; and Tim Londergan was added as Senior Account Manager reporting to agency partners Jared Scott and Carla Mote.

Television network Current TV welcomes Bill Hartnett as EVP/Marketing and John Sollecito as SVP/Cross Platform Research. Bill will manage the network’s marketing and brand strategy for traditional and digital platforms on air and off in addition to overseeing marketing that supports Current’s advertising and affiliate sales teams among other duties. John will head Current’s research activities across linear and digital in support of the programming, marketing, advertising and distribution teams. Both John and Bill are based in New York.

Proximus Mobility named Jason Allen as SVP/Sales and Operations based in Atlanta where he will provide oversight for sales and operations. Jason will report to Michael Zeto, CEO.

Rick Robinson was tagged for the newly-minted role as SVP/Interactive Product and Content at National Geographic Digital Media. Rick will head the company’s strategic advancements of multi-platform digital and interactive products, content plus editorial products. He will also be involved with Digital Media partnerships with other National Geographic product and editorial teams supporting content strategies across the digital realm.

A promotion was handed to Marc Juris to become EVP/COO at truTV. Marc will continue to have oversight of the network’s strategic planning, original programming, marketing and advertising. Marc is located in New York and reports to Steve Koonin, President, Turner Entertainment Networks.

Southern and Central California’s independent public television station, KCET added Kirk Kopic as Senior Executive/Corporate Sponsorships in the station’s development group. Kirk joins from MeeVi where he served as President/COO. In his new role, Kirk will report to Susan Reardon, Chief Development Officer at KCET.

Internationally-famous musician, composer and educator, Wynton Marsalis was appointed Cultural Correspondent for CBS. Wynton will offer his perspective on cultural and educational developments on CBS This Morning and CBS Sunday Morning. His first appearance is scheduled for January 16, the national observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s birthday.

Yesterday, Cablevision Systems Corp. said its COO Tom Rutledge is resigning from the company effective later this month. Tom has been with Cablevision since 2002 and was promoted to COO in 2004.

Former ABC Studios Director/Comedy, Melanie Frankel was hired at USA Network as VP/Original Comedy Series. In her new position, Melanie will hone in on comedy development and production. She will report to Bill McGoldrick, SVP/President, USA Original Scripted Programming.

Turner Entertainment Networks (TEN) elevated David Wolkis to VP/Production for TNT and TBS Originals. David will continue his oversight role on production of original series, original movies and specials in addition to developing and implementing production strategy, production schedules, budgets and relationships with the company’s studio partners and talent. David further will work closely with ad sales on product integrations in TNT and TBS series. Based in Los Angeles, David reports to Mark Weissman, SVP/Productions, TNT and TBS.

Red Tettemer + Partners, based in Philadelphia added Amanda Abrams as Senior Copywriter. Amanda will work on a variety of clients reporting to Steve O’Connell, Partner/ECD.

Scot Linden takes on the new role as GSM with Entravision Communications Corporation for its Univision and other Spanish-language television stations in the San Diego market. Scot will head the company’s local, regional and national sales activities in San Diego and with their sales teams.

Canada’s Fox/Incendo Television added Michael McLaughlin as VP/Program Sales for English Canada. Michael will be in charge of program sales for Twentieth Century Fox’s library of series and films in addition to content through Incendo suppliers including Content Media, GRB Entertainment, the Playboy Channel, the Spartacus series from Starz Network and TV movies produced by Incendo. Prior to this appointment, Michael was with Skywriter Media and Entertainment Group as President.
