Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 6, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Sandy Wax, President of Sprout.
What qualities are most important to you when making a new hire?
Aside from having the skills required for that position, I’m looking for a passion for the business, great energy and the ability to grow quickly. Our business doesn’t stand still, and Sprout is on a fast growth track. I need to know that this candidate is going to jump in, embrace new challenges and work collaboratively so he or she can adapt and learn as their function expands. I’m also looking for someone who is curious, resourceful, flexible and sees challenges as opportunities.
What was your first job?
My first job ever was at Burger King. We wore these horrible polyester red and gold uniforms (and hats!). In the cable industry, my first job was a Market Research manager for a consulting firm, Malarkey Taylor Associates, in Washington DC. We did customer satisfaction and channel lineup surveys for cable operators like TCI and TKR Cable. It was a great entry point into this industry, and I moved from there to a brand research position at Discovery Communications.
Who do you consider your mentor and why?
I have been lucky to have a number of mentors throughout my career, from amazing bosses like Jeff Shell and Deborah Blackwell to peers within the industry. A great mentor is wise, accessible, and will tell you the truth without sugarcoating. It’s just as important (maybe even more important) to have mentors and advisors as you progress in your career.
Describe the first time you found yourself in a leadership role and how you handled it.
My biggest “first” in the leadership area when I first joined Sprout as President in late 2005. We were a small startup with a handful of people and rented space. Sprout was a new channel and I was a new president. I handled it by building strong alliances with peers who could advise me, and hiring and supporting strong people who were very good at their jobs. To me, leadership is about setting a direction and inspiring smart people to work together to figure out how to get there. A good leader doesn’t have all the answers, but should have all the questions that encourage teams to think, to challenge and to excel.
If you could be in any profession other than kids entertainment, what would it be?
I’d manage a bar on a great beach serving amazing rum drinks in coconuts! This might get old after a year or two, so I would probably look for an industry that’s fun, always changing and keeps you young… like kids entertainment.

Former ESPN exec Keith Clinkscales has signed on as CEO of Revolt TV, the upcoming cable net targeted to urban millennials. Sean “Diddy” Combs told reporters at the TCA of the venture, “My mission is to bring kids back to television,” with a music channel that’s “looking for greatness… There are other places artists will get great exposure, but when you make it to Revolt you will feel you’ve been authorized.” Launch is due in late October.
