Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 3, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Grover, one of Sesame Street’s monster Muppets, is getting his own preschool aimed series, Super Grover 2.0 (13×6), which will also be featured as a segment on Sesame Street in the US beginning this September 2010.  Producer by Sesame Workshop, Super Grover 2.0 will focus on an age appropriate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) curriculum through modeling of the scientific inquiry process (observations, questions, developing answers via investigation and experiments, reporting findings).  Super Grover 2.0 is one of three new series that Sesame Workshop is currently in development and will introduce at Mipcom this October 4-8, 2010.  The other short-form two series are:

  • Count TV (26×5) – featuring the infamous Muppet Count von Count offering up the number of the day as well as animations, films and Muppet-filled skits also focused on numbers and early math skills. Each episode concludes with an animated Bert and Ernie segment singing and dancing about the number of the day.
  • Goodnight, Elmo (52×5) – stars Elmo and his Dad as they go through their bedtime routine, which includes making up bedtime stories that dissolve into Sesame Street fairytales.

eOne Entertainment (f/k/a E1 Entertainment) acquires the UK and Canadian rights to the 3D animated movie Gnomeo and Juliet from Pathe International, per Variety.  Directed by Kelly Asbury (Shrek 2), Gnomeo and Juliet will release in the UK and Canada in February 2011, while Touchstone Pictures will release the movie in the US on February 11, 2011.  The voice-over cast features James McAvoy, Emily Blunt, Michael Caine, Maggie Smith, Stephen Merchant, Ozzy Osbourne, Jason Statham and Matt Lucas and also features songs by Elton John, who is an executive producer on the film, and Bernie Taupin.

Chris Meledandri’s Illumination Entertainment is developing a Curious George movie, which will be distributed by Universal Pictures, per the L.A. Times.  According to the report the movie will follow Curious George on a new adventure and is “expected to feature the wry animated images of Despicable Me…”  The movie will feature a script by Larry Stuckey (Little Fockers).  In 2006 Universal and Imagine Entertainment produced the animated movie Curious George, featuring Will Ferrell as the voice of The Man with The Yellow Hat.

Disney XD picks up a third season of its live-action buddy comedy Zeke and Luther.  Production on the new episodes will begin this fall in Southern California.  Series creators and executive producers Matt Dearborn and Tom Burkhard (Even Stevens) are back for the new season as well as the cast including Hutch Dano, Adam Hicks, Ryan Newman and Daniel Curtis Lee.

Australian broadcaster ABC3‘s comedy Prank Patrol begin production on a second season for an additional 30 episodes.  Based on the original Prank Patrol series by Canada’s Apartment 11, the Australian adaptation of Prank Patrol is produced by activeTV and hosted by Scotty Tweedie, the new season to be filmed in both Melbourne (26 episodes) and Brisbane (13 episodes).  The season of Prank Patrol will air on ABC1 and ABC3 later this year.

Fox moves the preview of Terra Nova, the new family-targeted sci-fi adventure series from Steven Spielberg, to May 2011, ahead its official launch in fall 2011.  Jason O’Mara (Life on Mars) is set to star as the father in the series, which follows a family as they travel back in history to prehistoric times in an effort to save the human race on Earth.  Fox says the reason for the shift is to have more time to better market the series and, like Glee, give it the summer to build interest.  The series will feature digitally generated mixed with content shot on location in Australia.  Produced by Fox Television, DreamWorks Television, Kapital Entertainment and Chernin Entertainment, the pilot episode will be directed by Alex Graves (Fringe).  The series is executive produced by Spielberg, Peter Chernin, Brannon Braga, David Fury, Jon Cassar, Aaron Kaplan, Katherine Pope, Justin Falvey, Darryl Frank, Craig Silverstein and Kelly Marcel.
