It’s official; the galaxy far far away continues its 3D release in 2013. Lucasfilm and Fox unveiled their plans for the 3D theatrical release of Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith at the closing ceremony of the annual fan event Star Wars Celebration VI. The movies will be released in 3D back-to-back, with Episode II arriving in theaters on September 20, 2013, followed by Episode III on October 11, 2013. Lucasfilm and Fox released Star Wars: Episode 1 The Phantom Menace in 3D on February 10, 2012 and, per Box Office Mojo it grossed $43.5 million domestically, and $59.3 million at the foreign box office.

K’Nex launches its first licensed line of building sets based on Rovio‘s game app Angry Birds. The K’Nex initial sets, which feature Angry Birds characters such as Red Bird, Yellow Bird and King Pig, include Angry Birds: Intro Assortment Building Sets (four different sets for K5+, $10.99/each); Hammin’ Around (inspired by Danger Above, Episode 3, and is for K5+, $29.99); and Mission May’Ham (inspired by Mighty Hoax, Episode 2, for K5+, $29.99).
Saban Brands and McDonald’s continue their 18-year-long relationship by making limited edition Power Rangers and Paul Frank toys in McDonald’s Happy Meals now through September 20, 2012 in the US and Canada. The Power Rangers Happy Meals feature one of eight action-packed, limited edition Power Ranger action figures or role-play toys, all based on Saban’s most recent series, Power Rangers Super Samurai, which airs Saturdays at 12n on Nickelodeon. Additionally, kids get a Super Samurai badge with every Happy Meal box that also provides instructions on how to do Ranger Jacks (a Power Ranger style jumping jack) to get active. In the Paul Frank Happy Meals, kids can get one of eight limited edition Paul Frank themed items, all based on the brand’s Julius character, including a bendable figure, luggage tag, magnets, stationery kit, calendar, notebook, watch and bracelet.
Spil Games is teaming up with Universal Pictures to support the international release of Laika’s new 3D stop-motion animated feature film ParaNorman on its kid and family aimed online social gaming platforms. The deal was brokered by TED@MediaCom. Beginning this week the promotional campaign for the movie will go live in the UK, where ParaNorman will release on September 14, 2012. Spil Games’ fully integrated campaign for the movie uses advertising and editorial content on the homepages of all three of its UK social gaming platforms, GirlsgoGames.co.uk, Agame.com and Games.co.uk, and includes game hubs, avatars, and new game categories. The campaign will drive kids/families to a branded microsite, which features the movie trailer, film synopsis, image gallery, exclusive ParaNorman avatars for Spil Games, a new zombie game category, and downloadables for kids too. Since release dates for ParaNorman are staggered across Europe, Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region, the campaign will run until January 2013, when the movie opens in Australia and New Zealand.

The second season of the tween-girl targeted SciGirls (10×30, www.scigirls.org) series will premiere this October 2012 on PBS stations nationwide (check local listings). The STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) focused series will also offer up new various new online games, activities and other content. The creative team on the series is headed by Twin Cities Public Television’s Director of Science Content Richard Hudson, Executive Producer (Newton’s Apple, DragonflyTV). Co-Executive Producer is Kathleen Shugrue (Fetch!, ZOOM). Animation for the series is produced by Soup2Nuts (WordGirl). The website is developed by Big Bad Tomato Interactive. SciGirls is funded by The National Science Foundation, with additional funding is provided by L’Oreal USA. The first season of SciGirls earned a “New Approaches” Daytime Emmy Award for linking the show and website in unique ways.
Production begins this week on the third season of ABC3’s (Australia) teen-targeted drama Dance Academy in Sydney, Australia. Produced by Werner Film Productions, the new season of Dance Academy is comprised of 13×24 episodes and follows Tara Webster and her friends in their final year at The Academy and will reveal who will make the grade and be offered a position at The Company and who may have to find another dream. Season three of Dance Academy, which brings the series to a total of 65 episodes, is slated to debut on ABC3 in mid-2013. Dance Academy has been sold in 180+ territories and can be seen in the TeenNick in the US and on Nickelodeon in the UK.
Lexibook (www.lexibook.com), a France-based consumer electronics company, will launch its kid-targeted Android educational tablet in the US on September 15, 2012. With a 7-inch touch display the Lexibook tablet includes a 600MHz processor, 256 MB RAM and 4GB of storage (which can be expanded to 16GB via a micro SD card), and will be offered first at Toys “R” Us stores across the US. Designed for use by kids (toddlers to tweens), the tablet features general education content, tests and interactive quizzes, and School Zone apps and 200 pre-loaded e-books, 25 games and 52 activities, and also features built-in Wi-Fi with embedded parent control, a camera and photo editing software. Kids will also be able to download a range of apps via the Lexibook Market, including Pig Rush, Fruit Ninja, Angry Birds, Pandora, and Skype. Animated programming content, music and other videos are available via the Lexibook Videostore by Kabillion and Spotify music portal.
Scholastic Media and New Video, a distributor and unit of Cinedigm, will help kids get back into the swing of school with the re-launch of Scholastic’s classic The Magic School Bus animated series on DVD On Tuesday, September 4, 2012. The Magic School Bus home entertainment release will be offered in several configurations. The Magic School Bus: The Complete Series ($79.95) release features all 52 episodes of the series (30 episodes available for the first time) on 8 DVDs, in new packaging including a 3D lenticular cover of the series characters. The collectible thin-pack set also includes a guide for kids with trivia and experiments, as well as an interactive Parents’ Guide with lessons and learning opportunities. There will be two three-pack Magic School Bus DVD releases, The Magic School Bus: Blast Off! From Sea To Space and The Magic School Bus: Field Trip Fun and Games ($12.95 per title), each featuring 12 episodes of the series, some available for the first time. Additionally, four The Magic School Bus DVD singles ($12.95/per title), The Human Body, Super Star power, Takes a Dive Takes Flight, each funning 90 minutes were recently released. The Magic School Bus recently celebrated its 25th anniversary.
All dressed up in black tie and ready for DVD. Big Idea Entertainment is set to release the first season of the animated series 3-2-1 Penguins! on DVD this fall, first on September 15, 2012 in Christian stores, and three days later on September 18 in general retail stores. 3-2-1 Penguins! Complete Season One, which runs four hours and 46 minutes, is comprised of all 13 episodes from the debut season of the series that aired, which previously aired on NBC Saturday mornings, Telemundo and Ion TV. Bonus content on the DVD release includes How to Draw Midgel, Space Academy: Speak Like An Alien, Midgel’s Cool Blue Space Fuel, and the Make Your Own Planet activity. Big Idea Entertainment is part of Classic Media, which was acquired last month by DreamWorks Animation.
