Good morning. It’s Tuesday, August 27, 2013, and this is your weekly issue of Cynopsis: Classified Advantage!
Welcome to Leadership Lessons, the column that focuses on conversations with senior managers and leaders in the TV world, speaking candidly about their professional journeys and how that informs what they look for when hiring new employees. Today, meet Bob Scanlon, General Manager of Velocity.
What was your first leadership position and what were the challenges?
At ESPN in 1980, I was promoted to a position where I coordinated live programming. There was a lot of on-air editorial responsibility – ESPN was really trailblazing in live television then, and I had to make decisions about what the audience wanted to see, and where they wanted to go next? Do you go to highlights, go live after the game, go to the next game? It was like being an air traffic controller incoming programs, outgoing programs, when to run commercials.
What do you know now about being a leader that you didn’t know early in your career?
That a truly effective manager is one who allows people to not only make mistakes but allows them to take on as much as they want regardless of the job they’re in. They should see a future in the company. Even if you have really talented people you’re not going to keep them unless you’re developing productive people for the company, as opposed to for your own department. Turnover may be higher, but you’re developing people to make them effective employees, not just staff.
What do you look for in candidates during the interview process?
Someone who can articulate a clear career aspiration. What will get you out of bed in the morning not to go to work, but to go to your dream job? I admire people who have thought that through before coming in.
What would turn you off in a job applicant?
A person’s inability to write, or proper use of language. I think it indicates a certain level of laziness if you don’t take the time to write something and re-read it and make sure it’s spelled correctly. And a yellow flag is the way people dress. I once had someone come in parachute pants and Birkenstock sandals and I thought, “This might not be the right place for you!”
