Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 5, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Spain’s Zinkia Entertainment takes a 51% majority stake in London-based kids/family entertainment company Cake.  The strategic deal aims to support content brand management and distribution efforts for both companies, while allowing Zinkia and Cake to maintain their own management, teams, and identities.  The terms of the deal were not disclosed.  Properties handled by Cake include, Oscar’s Oasis, Poppy Cat, Tom & the Slice of Bread with Strawberry Jam & Honey, Angelo Rules and The Sparticle Mystery.  Zinkia is best known for its global multiplatform property Pocoyo.  Zinkia is also showcasing its new comedy adventure series Mola Noguru to broadcasters and licensing companies this week at MIPTV.

Navarre Corporation announced yesterday afternoon it has sold Funimation Entertainment for $24 million, in an all cash deal, to a group of investors that includes Gen Fukunaga, who is Funimation’s CEO, as a minority stakeholder.  As part of the sale, the Navarre has entered into an deal to continue to act as Funimation’s exclusive distributor in the US on a continuing basis, and will also act as its logistics and fulfillment services provider.  Navarre said last year it had a number of suitors for Funimation.

Following up on the early story that Arnold Schwarzenegger is returning to the world of entertainment by teaming with Stan Lee and his Pow! Entertainment, Andy Heyward’s A Squared Entertainment, and Archie Comics as a superhero The Governator, who will star in a new comic book, animated series, and consumer products, there will also be a 3D movie.  The comics, series, movie and products feature Schwarzenegger’s likeness and voice.  The full set of plans for The Governator was officially announced at a press conference, attended by Schwarzenegger, at MIPTV yesterday in Cannes, where the property is being showcased to international buyers.  A three-minute trailer for The Governator can be found at www.youtube.com/user/TheRealGovernator , oh and it includes a cameo from reporter Larry King.

Moonscoop teams with its sister company Lux Animation, UK-based production company Talent Television and Ireland’s Telegael to co-produce the new live-action comedy series My Phone Genie (26×30), which will feature special effects.  Targeted to tween/teens12+, My Phone Genie is a CiTV (UK) commission in association with ZDF/ZDF Enterprises (Germany).  The series will also feature multiplatform offerings.  In the series Jasmine Hart (Jaz) winds up with her own genie in her mobile phone when she downloads a free ringtone featured in a online pop-up ad.  Mayhem ensues as Gene, the genie, settles in for a lifetime of service and grants wishes as he can.  Moonscoop and ZDF Enterprises will handle worldwide distribution and licensing and merchandising for My Phone Genie, excluding Japan, which will be managed by Talent Television.  The series is executive produced by Moonscoop’s Maia Tubiana, Talent Television’s Tony Humphreys and Telegael’s Paul Cummins.

CBeebies and FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) team for the new multiplatform action adventure animated preschool series Tree Fu Tom (26×22), scheduled to debut on CBeebies in early 2012.  Focused on helping with kid’s physical development skills, Tree Fu Tom follows the adventures of Tom (8), who has gains magical superhero powers and takes viewers on adventures and encourages them to help him along the way with some physical movement magic, called Tree Fu, to help save the day.  Featuring animation by Blue Zoo Animation, Tree Fu Tom is a co-production between CBeebies’ In-House Production and FME.  The executive producers for the BBC are Jackie Edwards and Alison Stewart, and Bob Higgins and Sander Schwartz for FME. Tree Fu Tom was created and is being produced by Daniel Bays.

And… BBC Worldwide green lights new preschool properties for its international preschool brand, CBeebies, and will introduce them throughout 2011 and 2012.

  • Together Cbeebies (UK) and BBC Worldwide have co-commissioned the new wildlife program Andy’s Wild Adventures (40×15) for the channel.  The series will be produced by BBC’s Natural History Unit and stars Cbeebies host Andy Day and his sidekick, Kip.  Andy’s Wild Adventures will premiere on Cbeebies (UK) in early 2012 and will then rollout on the international feeds of the channel.
  • BBC Worldwide acquires the global channel, distribution and merchandising rights to Baby Jake (26×11), a new mixed live-action and 2D photographic animation preschool series from Darrall Macqueen.  The show follows the magical adventures of Jake as he giggles through various lands with his imaginary animal friends.  The series is set to debut on Cbeebies (UK) this summer, and then on Cbeebies international feeds from the end of 2011.
  • Jollywobbles (13×9) is a new comedy from writer/producer/director and star Justin Fletcher (Something Special, Gigglebiz).  The series debuts on Cbeebies international channels this summer.  BBC Worldwide is managing the international rights of the Scrumptious House show.
  • BBC Worldwide has also helped fund in-house production for new season of Cbeebies series including, season six of Nina and the Neurons: Brilliant Bodies (25 x 15) and a third season of Show Me Show Me (25 x 28)

Also at WonderCon, Warner Bros. Animation also offered a new trailer for animated ThunderCats, the new animated series that will air on Cartoon Network.  You can check out the trailer on Facebook at http://on.fb.me/fmFfMF. The series is based on the classic 1980s animated action series.  The new ThunderCats is executive produced by Sam Register (Teen Titans, Ben 10, Batman: The Brave and the Bold).

CBeebies grows under a new BBC Worldwide distribution deal with Argentina’s Gigared network to make the preschool channel available in four new provinces, Santa Fe, Entre Rios, Corrientes and Chaco.  CBeebies is now available in these areas on Channel 33 of Gigared’s basic analog package.  CBeebies can also be seen in Argentina under a previous deal with cable operator Supercanal.  This year CBeebies has premiered in the Philippines, following a deal with pay TV’s Skycable, and is set to launch this June 2011 in Norway, Denmark, Sweden and Finland as a branded programming block on Canal +.

Disney Junior acquires the preschool animated series Guess How Much I Love You – The Adventures of Little Nutbrown Hare (52×11) for the US.  From SRL Productions, Guess How Much I Love You is a co-production with Singapore’s Scrawl Studios Germany broadcaster KI.KA and ARD’s HR (Hessischer Rundfunk).  CCI Entertainment holds the worldwide distribution and licensing rights to the series in Latin America, Asia, Middle East and Africa.  Guess How Much I Love You is also set to air on Disney Channel Australia and New Zealand, with deals also in place for Germany, Australia, Canada, Finland and Sweden.  The series is based on the picture book by author Sam McBratney and illustrator Anita Jeram, which is published by Walker Books.

MTV Networks International (MTVNI) acquires the TV and digital media rights to the K3-8 aimed educational animated property, Kikoriki (76×6.5 min), from Russian’s Riki Group, a multimedia production, licensing, event and publishing company.  Effective immediately, MTVNI will represent Kikoriki (aka in Russia as Smeshariki) across Central and Eastern Europe (excluding Russia), the Middle East, Africa and the Asia Pacific region (excluding Greater China) and is launching the property at MIPTV 2011 this week.  Under the deal, MTVNI also acquires rights to broadcast Kikoriki on Nickelodeon TV platforms in Russia and CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States), Central Europe and Africa from August 2011.   The series will be localized in Polish, Hungarian, Czech, Romanian, and English for Nickelodeon viewers in Russia and CIS, Central Europe and Africa.

MarVista Entertainment and Nickelodeon complete a multi-territory deal for the Power Rangers Samurai series.  Under the new agreement Nickelodeon will feature the series in European territories, including Germany, the Benelux, UK and Ireland, throughout Latin America, and in Australia and New Zealand.  Nickelodeon acquires all TV rights for 40 new Power Rangers Samurai episodes for Germany, Holland and Flemish-speaking Belgium, and pay TV rights for all other territories.  Nickelodeon will begin airing Power Rangers Samurai in May 2011.  Nickelodeon hosted the worldwide debut of Power Rangers Samurai in the US in February 2011.  Power Rangers Samurai is produced by Saban Brands and Power Rangers Productions.

Family Channel (Canada) will launch its new live action series Really Me on Saturday, April 23 at 6:30p.  Commissioned by the network and produced by Fresh TV (6Teen, Total Drama Island, My Babysitter’s A Vampire), Really Me revolves around average high schooler Maddy, who lands her own reality series, on which she stars with her best friend Julia.  Of course things aren’t always as easy as they seem particularly when, like Maddy, you are the middle kid in a family of over-achieving scene stealers, including two brothers and her Dad, a former NHL star, not to mention with the ever present ratings-focused producer on hand.  Following its premiere, Really Me will air Sundays at 6:30p.  Really Me was co-created by Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch and produced by Brian Irving, all are partners at Fresh TV.  Brian Roberts (Everybody Loves Raymond) serves as director and creative producer, with Alice Prodanou as co-executive producer.

Rainbow inks a deal with Russian broadcaster CTC for the animated Winx Club and PopPixie.  The Winx Club (seasons 1-4) has done quite well for CTC.  The new pact includes four new Winx Club TV movies and the new season five of the series (26×24), both of which are co-productions with Nickelodeon.  CTC will premiere the new Winx Club movies in fall 2011, and then Winx Club 3D Magical Adventure in January 2012 (around the holidays), followed by the launch of season five in fall 2012.  Additionally, CTC picks up PopPixie (52×13), which it will launch in fall 2011.

Zodiak Kids, the kid’s production/distribution unit of Zodiak Media Group, signs several TV deals for the preschool TV series Little Princess.  Picking season three of Little Princess (35×11) are ABC TV (Australia), Discovery Latin America, ATV (Hong Kong), DR1 (Denmark), Thai PBS, Czech TV, TVO (Canada), and RUV (Iceland).  Based on the kid’s picture books by author/illustrator Tony Ross, the Little Princess TV series is produced at The Illuminated Film Company’s studio, and includes a total 100×11 and two specials 2×22.  Zodiak Rights holds all the international broadcast rights (excluding Japan and Korea) and all licensing and merchandising rights (excluding publishing) to Little Princess.

Content Television (f/k/a Fireworks International) enters into a deal with broadcaster ABC TV (Australia) to provide 50+ hours of kid-targeted programming.  The agreement will see ABC TV acquire programs including: the live-action series Even Stevens, which stars Shia LeBeouf; The Assistants, a comedy that follows four Hollywood movie assistants; the live-action series Black Hole High that revolves around the strange adventures of five teens in a secret school science club at Black Holsey High School; and two CBBC Productions  the comedy Young Dracula, about a Vlad (12) who tries to hide the fact his family are vampires, and Desperados, a drama about a group of teens that love to play basketball and happen to be in wheelchairs.  ABC TV plans to debut the series later this year.

Discovery Familia welcomes the preschool exercise-centric series Bo on the Go to its Discovery Kids block, where it is airing Monday-Friday 12p.  The series joins the13-hour curriculum-based daytime programming on the Spanish-language Discovery Familia channel.
