Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 27, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Disney XD orders a second season of its live-action series I’m In The Band.  Set to head back into production this June in Hollywood, the new season finds the band making its way, ever so slowly, to an epic comeback, and also includes a one-hour special.  Created by Michael B. Kaplan (Fraser, Girlfriends) and Ron Rappaport (Date My Mom), and executive produced by Kaplan and Richard Gurman (Married … with Children, Still Standing), the series is produced by It’s A Laugh Productions.

MORE KIDS STUFF

4Kids Entertainment inks a license deal with Funimation Entertainment and Toei Animation for the US broadcast TV rights to the new animated TV series Dragon Ball Z Kai.  Slated to debut as part of 4Kids’ 2010-2011 season of TheCW4Kids Saturday morning programming block this fall, sneak peeks of Dragon Ball Z Kai will be available this summer. Additionally, episodes of the series will stream via www.4kids.tv and www.4kidstv.com .  Dragon Ball Z Kai (which is known in Japan as Dragon Ball Kai) is revised, updated and re-mastered HDTV version of the original Dragon Ball Z series, which was produced as part of the series 20th anniversary last year and overseen by creator Akira Toriyama, Shueisha and Toei Animation.  The new series debuted on Japanese TV in April 2009.

The US Senate Commerce Committee’s Consumer Protection, Product Safety, and Insurance Subcommittee has scheduled a hearing for April 29, 2010 (10a) to discuss the issue of kids online privacy and protection.  The hearing will look updating the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act in the era of Facebook and new digital platforms.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Summit Entertainment teams with thisMoment, a new software platform, to create an interactive Twilight fan channel.  The new Twilight channel will connect fans across various social sites, including Facebook, MySpace and YouTube, and will feature exclusive interviews, real-time online chat ability across multiple web environments and live streaming video from upcoming Twilight Saga events.

Big Idea Entertainment plans to release the new DVD fairy-tale parody, VeggieTales: Sweetpea BeautyA Girl After God’s Own Heart, on July 31, 2010.  The DVD, which features a host of songs, is supported by a marketing and ad campaign with a range of licensing and promotional partners including Gund, Crocs/Jibbitz and Gymboree, and interactive grocery carts for kids at regional Kroger and Kmart stores, and on TVs at QSRs including McDonalds, Wendy’s, Arby’s, KFC, Hardee’s, Carl’s Jr and Chuck E. Cheese’s.  The release bonus features include an art gallery, Sweetpea’s True Beauty Guide for girls, and sing along segments among other segments.  Merchandise based on the title, including from Gund (plush toys), Talicor (puzzles), Crossroads Designs (t-shirts), Crocs/Jibbitz (purse and shoe charms) among others will release simultaneous to the DVD.

D3Publisher, an interactive software publisher and developer, will release the new game Despicable Me: The Game for Wii, Nintendo DS, PlayStation 2, and PSP, which is based on the new Universal and Illumination Entertainment‘s 3D CGI animated feature film Despicable Me.  Developed in partnership with Universal Partnerships & Licensing, the game’s release will coincide with the release of the movie this summer in North America (July 9, 2010) and international (various).  Despicable Me: The Game for Wii, PlayStation 2, and PSP is being developed by Monkey Bar Games (currently rated E10+, Everyone 10 and up), while Despicable Me: The Game  Minion Mayhem for Nintendo DS being developed by Way Forward (currently rated E, for Everyone).

Columbia Pictures, PepsiCo and Little Caesars Pizza team in a promotion for Columbia’s upcoming feature The Karate Kid, which is salted for release June 11, 2010.  The national promotion, Your Ticket to Kick It, is a scratch-off game, that will provide consumers with a scratch-off code card when they purchase a Hot-N-Ready pizza with any Pepsi/Diet Pepsi product, beginning now and running while supplies last.  Prizes include movie passes (48), and various Little Caesars gift cards for specific products, as well as other movie related prizes (e.g. posters, The Karate Kid merchandise), and restaurant discount coupons.  Additionally, two different mini movie posters will be available at Little Caesars restaurants from May 18.  Further information can be found at LittleCaesars .com.

Teens use online connection to brands, such as “friending” a brand, as another way to define who they are and what they believe, according to a new survey conducted by Habbo Hotel with 5,300 teen members of its English-language sites (US, Canada, UK, Australia, and Singapore) in January 2010.  Some of the results of the surveys, entitled A Teenager’s Brand Experience include:

  • 72% of teens surveyed say they are willing to friend a brand in Habbo Hotel.
  • 92% of teens want to participate in brand activities or contests in Habbo Hotel and 40% say they have created content for these brand activities.
  • 93% of teens in Habbo continue show their brand loyalty after a promotion ends by continuing to showcase branded badges or virtual goods.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

MTVN UK & Ireland and BSkyB appoint Tina McCann as the new SVP and MD, Nickelodeon UK.  The position had been open since the top of the year when Howard Litton exited Nickelodeon UK after 15 years.  McCann had been with Turner Broadcasting where she was Acting Chief Content Officer for kid-targeted entertainment brands, including Cartoon Network, Boomerang and Cartoonito, across EMEA.  McCann takes up her new position from May 10, 2010, where she will be responsible for Nickelodeon UK’s operations and brands.  She will report to the Board of Nickelodeon UK.  McCann is credited with launching 17 channels including Cartoon Network and TCM across Europe and channels in a range of languages, including the development of CETV (China).  Nickelodeon UK has also promoted Andy Goodhand to SVP/Strategy and Planning Director.  Reporting to McCann, Goodhand will oversee strategic property/consumer product management and development, consumer commercial marketing, press and PR, research, and channel planning.

Robert Voltaggio is promoted to SVP/National Ad Sales Pricing & Planning, Discovery Communications.  Voltaggio will oversee all ad sales and inventory portfolio management for Discovery’s 13 US networks.  He reports to Joe Abruzzese, President/Ad Sales, Discovery Communications.  Prior to Discovery, Voltaggio was VP/Pricing and Planning for AMC and Women’s Entertainment (WE), and before that was with ABC Family Network in its Sales Planning group.

Aaron Linton joins Toronto-based Guru Studio as a member of the production team.  Linton, who formerly led the Toons division of C.O.R.E. Digital, will work on Guru’s new preschool series Justin Time  for Family Channel (Canada) and Playhouse Disney (Canada).  Previously Linton directed a range of kid-aimed shows such as Angela Anaconda, The Save-Ums, Franny’s Feet and Super Why.

30-year industry veteran Mark Zoradi joins Imax Corporation as a non-executive strategic advisor this month.  Zoradi, who stepped down as President of Disney Motion Pictures Group in fall 2009, will be based in LA, will advise Imax in a range of areas, including film acquisition, distribution and marketing, as well as studio and exhibitor relationships. Zoradi joined Disney in 1980 as a marketing coordinator for Disney Home Video.  Earlier this month, Zoradi joined the Board of Directors of newly formed Rave Cinemas, which is the fifth largest theater exhibition chain in the US.
