Keywords are to resumes as Google’s algorithm is to search. Just as a business will not rank high on a Google search page if you don’t pay attention to the keywords that people use when conducting a search, the same is true for resumes.
Companies often receive thousands of CV’s and the only cost-effective way to manage them is to use technology to sort resumes based on keywords matching the job description. So when you’re writing your own resume, this is a great intro to pinpointing and using keywords in your application process.Another approach is to copy and paste a job description into TagCrowd. This will give you a visual key as to which words are most often repeated. Be sure and incorporate as many of the keywords as possible.
Yes, plenty! Learning Express is a terrific source that guides you through the resume-building process, and it is available through local libraries in 17 states. Call your local library and ask if they offer it. If so, you can access this service online using your library card number.
We also recommend Get Noticed First. This is a free service that provides interactive templates for resume building, thank you letters and cover letters. Get Noticed First also provides a website to display your resume and recommendations. Another option, Microsoft offers free downloadable templates for building resumes. If you’re in an area of the media industry where a multi-media resume is the best way to show your skills, Romshu is a platform for just that from video to audio to slide presentations and photos.

Crown Media Family Networks, home of Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movie Channel, has promoted Amy Jo Wayne to Senior Vice President of national advertising sales. Wayne, who previously served as SVP of eastern advertising sales, will continue to create advertising solutions to leverage all client and planner opportunities nationwide and will also be charged with developing a national sales strategy for Crown Media in the marketplace.
Levels Beyond, creators of Reach Engine, a software platform providing streamlined media-management, distribution, optimization and monetization capabilities for video, has appointed media veteran Nick Rhodes as President and Chief Operating Officer. Univision Communications Inc. has named Ken Wilkey as Senior Vice President, Engineering and Technical Operations, Univision Television Group. Stephen David Entertainment has named Shirley Escott as Vice President of Production and David C. White as Director of Development. Escott previously spent over 5 years as the Co-Executive Producer and EIC at BBC Production USA. White has already worked with Stephen David Entertainment on numerous productions, including The Men Who Built America. WCVB, Boston’s news leader, has named JC Monahan as the new co-host of Chronicle and Cindy Fitzgibbon as EyeOpener meteorologist. Monahan, who began working at WCVB in in 2001, will begin co-hosting with Anthony Everett in June and will continue to make appearances on EyeOpener and take on additional news responsibilities. Fitzgibbon starts with the Boston station immediately and joins the station’s EyeOpener team at the end of May. She has forecasted the weather for 17 years and spent the last decade as a meteorologist in Boston.

Michael Mahan has been appointed President of DC Media, the parent company of Dick Clark Productions. Madon will oversee company operations including acquisitions, business affairs, finance and foreign distribution. Mahan previously served as president of TV Guide Network and TVGuide.com and once worked for Dick Clark Productions as Senior Vice President of Corporate Development.
Andrew Strauser has been promoted to Vice President, Talent Development and Casting for TLC. He will continue to lead the charge in bringing new talent to TLC, including casting for existing series, as well as finding new talent to build series around.
GroupM is expanding its lineup of multicultural media services under the auspices of the newly established unit GroupM Multicultural. The new division will be led by Gonzalo Del Fa, an experienced, multicultural media agency executive, who is currently Managing Director of MEC Bravo, the Hispanic media specialist division at GroupM agency MEC. NBCUniversal has appointed Tina Silvestri Senior Vice President, Business Services, Operations & Technical Services. A 16-year NBCUniversal veteran, Silvestri last served as Senior Vice President of Operations for the NBC Owned Television Stations. In her new role she will lead the company’s combined business service functions, including EHS, Crisis Management & Business Continuity, Transportation, Energy Programs, Retail Operations, and Food Services. She will also provide global oversight for the company’s facilities.
Laurel Weir has been promoted to Senior Vice President, Strategic Insights and Research at TV Land. Weir has been with the network since 2002, first as a manager and then as a senior director of TV Land research. In her new position, she will continue to oversee the research department and provide the Development and Original Programming group with insight and feedback on projects in various stages of development.
Abby Phillip will be joining ABC News as a digital reporter covering politics out of the Washington bureau. Phillip spent the past year as part of the ABC News Fellowship program where she worked at Nightline and This Week. Her new position begins in May.
