Good morning. It’s Tuesday, April 13, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Cartoon Network unveils plans to set up Cartoon Network Animation Academy, offering training programs in all areas of animation, and development and production studios at Abu Dhabi-based twofour54.  With the goal of supporting and growing the young Arab animation industry in the Middle East and North Africa, the new Cartoon Network and twofour54 partnership will also result in the development and production of projects based on local content.  The timeline for the initiatives will see the Animation Academy and development studios open this September 2010, followed by the production studios in early 2011.

FremantleMedia Enterprises partners with Singapore’s Media Development Authority (MDA) to launch the International Animation Fund (IAF).  The new IAF will invite applications from around the world for new animated content in any format (e.g. TV series, TV movies, feature films), and will see MDA co-investing up to US$3.5 million for each qualifying project. Under the partnership, FremantleMedia Enterprises will represent the selected animated projects as worldwide distributor.  IAF applications information and applications are available now at www.smf.sg.  Last year MDA launched its International Film Fun during the Cannes Film Festival, which aims to encourage international live-action feature film co-productions in and with Singapore.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Marvel Animation gives the go-ahead on a brand new animated Spider-man action series, entitled Ultimate Spider-Man, which will premiere on Disney XD in fall 2011.  The new Ultimate Spider-Man series follows the teenage Peter Parker as he comes to terms with his powers and origins and deal with various relationships. The series also features teen Spidey teaming up with other Marvel Super Heroes as well as new characters.

MIPTV

Nick Jr., Nickelodeon’s 24/7 preschool channel, picks up the US broadcast syndication rights to the CGI animated preschool series Pocoyo (104×7), which is co-produced by Zinkia and ITV Studios Global Entertainment.  Pocoyo will make its English-language debut this spring on Nick Jr.  The popular series revolves around the adventures of 3-year-old boy named Pocoyo (little me, in Spanish) and his animal pals Elly (an elephant), Pato (a duck) and Loula (a dog).  ITV Studios Global Entertainment handles TV distribution for Pocoyo, excluding Spain, Portugal, Italy and Latin, which are distributed by Zinkia.  Bandai America holds the mater toy licensing agreement for the property in the US and Canada.  Zinkia created and recently launched the kid-targeted virtual world PocoyoWorld.com ( www.pocoyoworld.com ).  Pocoyo airs on 100+ territories worldwide.

BBC Worldwide inks a deal for the preschool photo-puppetry animated series 3rd & Bird (50×10 and 1×20 holiday special) with Disney Channel US.  Created by Josh Selig and produced in by his Little Airplane Productions (London and NY), 3rd & Bird is slated to make its US premiere on Disney Channel’s Playhouse Disney block in early 2011.  Fisher-Price holds a multi-year master toy license for the global rights (excluding Asia) to 3rd & Bird, under which it will develop preschool and toddler toys including electronic and non-electronic plastic figures, toys, vehicles, playsets and feature and standard plushes.

California-based Skechers Entertainment set to launch its first kid-targeted animated action/adventure/comedy series, Zevo-3 (26×22), with a pre-sale to Nicktoons Network (US), which will debut the series in fall 2010.  A 2D animated series featuring 3D CGI effects, Zev0-3 ( www.zevo-3.com ) revolves around the adventures of three average teens (and their typical teen angst) that wind up with super powers following a freak accident where they are exposed to a mysterious compound that alters their DNA.  Zev0-3 is a Skechers Entertainment production in association with Moonscoop, with Moonscoop handling worldwide distribution.

Classic Media acquires worldwide TV and home entertainment distribution rights (excluding the Middle East) to the new short-form 3D animated preschool series Nan & Lili (200×3).  The interactive series revolves around two young characters and their human and animal friends, and is designed to encourage preschoolers to play, learn and solve problems through exploration and discovery.  Created by Chocolate Moose Media‘s Firdaus Kharas for Al Jazeera Children’s Channel (JCC), all 200 episodes are available in Arabic, English and French, with an additional 100 episodes in development for delivery this year.

HIT Entertainment completes a range of renewal and new VOD deals for its portfolio of programming around the world.  Deals include programming such as Angelina Ballerina, Barney, Bob the Builder, Fireman Sam, Pingu, Thomas & Friends in countries such as the UK, Italy, Turkey, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Korea, Taiwan and Japan.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Penelope K by the way, the BBC Worldwide Channels’ first international CBeebies channel commission, will launch on CBeebies in Australia on April 26.  The live-action series starring Amanda Bishop (The Upside Down Show) will then broadcast in the UK and rollout across EMEA, Asia and Latin America throughout 2010.  Developed by Sydney-based Blink Films, the property was selected last year as part of a CBeebies local Australian production initiative.  Produced by Blink Films in association with production partner Freehand, the series revolves around Penelope K and the Information Station she runs, a place where kids can find the answers to all their questions, if only she had could remember or find where she put the answers. Penelope K is lucky to have her friends there to help her out with the facts to help put together answers along with help from kids and viewers.

Fox will air Teen Choice 2010 on Monday, August 9, 8-10p.  With Dr Pepper returning as the sponsor for the annual special, the show will celebrate teen favorites, who will be awarded the Teen Choice Award Surfboards, in a range of entertainment and sports categories.  Stay tuned for the first round of nominees, voting information as well as who will serve as host for the show.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Pacific Entertainment Corp. inks a three-year licensing deal with United Legwear Company to serve as exclusive legwear licensee for the Baby Genius brand in the US and Canada.  Under the deal United Legwear will manufacture and distribute infant and toddler products, featuring Baby Genius characters, including infant/toddler layettes, blankets and bibs, socks, tights, leggings, slipper socks and booties, as well as toddler body suits and tanks.  The initial products will debut this fall 2010.  The pact was brokered by the Joester Loria Group, which serves as the exclusive licensing agency for Baby Genius.

American Greetings Properties (AGP) and Mindworks Entertainment, AGP’s licensing agent in Japan, have signed several new licensing deals for Care Bears in Japan.  New deals include: Motodesign (“aqua series” computer accessories/office supplies); Runa (cell phone accessories/health and beauty aides); Santan (bath accessories/domestics); Iwaya (bags and finger puppets); Future Innovation (watches/clocks); Watanabe (retro t-shirts); Small Planet (apparel/fashion accessories); Sony Creative Products (stationery); Cube (plush), T-Arts (capsule toys); Sega and J Dream (items for “clamping” machine). Products will be launched at mid-high tier department stores such as Parco, Plaza, Loft and specialty stores.

Atlantyca Entertainment appoints Biplano as the exclusive licensing for the Geronimo Stilton property across Spain and Portugal.  Under the deal Biplano has the rights to license the Geronimo Stilton brand, which includes Geronimo Stilton animation, Geronimo Stilton Classic and Geronimo Stilton: Kingdom of Fantasy, across all categories, excluding publishing and live events.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Kids TV veteran, Finn Arnesen is appointed to the newly created position of SVP/International Distribution and Development, Hasbro Studios. Arnesen, who had until last fall served as SVP and GM/Original Series and International Development, Turner Broadcasting, which included Cartoon Network, will lead Hasbro Studios international expansion, which includes content sales, distribution, channel and program development outside of North America, across TV, online and other media.

Rentrak Corporation names David Paiko as VP/Business Development, Home Entertainment Essentials (HEE).  Based in the LA office, Paiko is responsible for developing new and managing existing relationships with Rentrak’s studio, agency and video game partners for Rentrak’s Home Video and Retail Essentials services, as well as its Video Game Ad Monitor services.  He will report to Christopher Robert, SVP/Home Entertainment Media & Digital.  Paiko has toiled in business development, market research at ACNielsen and VideoScan, and home entertainment market research consulting.
