Cynopsis: Sports
09.19.13

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 19, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.

After a seven year run, Nationwide will step aside from its title sponsorship of NASCAR’s Nationwide Series to focus its efforts on the primary series, the Sprint Cup. The move will occur after the 2014 season, with Nationwide remaining a partner with NASCAR as an official sponsor for auto, home, life and business insurance through 2017 and via endorsement deals with Cup drivers Dale Earnhardt Jr., Danica Patrick and Ricky Stenhouse Jr. Nationwide also will become the presenting sponsor of the Betty Jane France Humanitarian Award. Executives told reporters that there will be “very strong interest” in the entitlement position for the series.

On the Air

ESPN is expanding its tennis programming, agreeing to a long-term deal with the ATP World Tour to broaden coverage of the BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells, Calif.; Sony Open Tennis in Miami; and the season-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals. Overall, over 44 hours will be aired as a result of the agreement, including, for the first time, both the women’s and men’s championships from the South Florida event. In addition, more live action from every ATP World Tour Masters 1000 and 500 tournament will live on ESPN3, for a tally of up to 1,200 hours annually.

The NFL announced that its telecasts top the top three positions among all TV programs for the week ending Sept. 15. Of course, CBS’ national telecast of the Broncos and Giants top the top spot with 26.4 million average viewers, followed by the 49ers/Seahawks on NBC’s SNF with 20.5 million and ESPN’s Week 1 MNF opener of the Eagles/Redskins earning 16.5 million. On the local front, NFL games topped the ratings in 29 NFL markets, led by New Orleans with a 49.2/71. Rounding out the top five were Seattle, Denver, Milwaukee and Kansas City.

Broadcasters announced plans for the upcoming WNBA Playoffs with ESPN channel set to carry up to 17 playoff games and NBA TV on deck for up to six contests. ESPN and ESPN2 will utilize a new open featuring Selena Gomez performing her song “Like a Champion” on every telecast from the postseason, featuring custom performance footage shot in London for a video open that includes ESPN/WNBA co-branding integrated with Gomez. Conference semifinals and finals announcer parings include Ryan Ruocco, Rebecca Lobo and Holly Rowe as well as Pam Ward, Carolyn Peck and LaChina Robinson. ESPN2’s coverage of the best-of-three series for Eastern and Western Conference Finals begins on Thursday, Sept. 26.

NBA TV’s coverage of the WNBA Playoff games start Friday, Sept. 20, with a doubleheader featuring Game 1 Conference Semifinals matchups pitting WNBA Champion Indiana Fever against the Chicago Sky at 7p. The later game will see the Seattle Storm visit the Minnesota Lynx at 9p.

European soccer leaders told the AP that the continent’s 54 soccer nations will support a move of the 2022 Qatar World Cup away from its current summer slot and instead support play for the tournament in January. FIFA President Sepp Blatter has previously pushed for a November kickoff, a move that FOX is reportedly against.

MLB Network will showcase The Lyman Bostock Story on Sunday at 10p, looking back on the star Minnesota Twins and California Angels outfielder who was murdered four seasons into his career at the age of 27. The special is narrated by MLB Network’s Bob Costas and marks the 35th anniversary of Bostock’s death on Monday, September 23.
