Cynopsis: Kids!
09/15/11

Good morning. It’s Thursday, September 15, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Amid a flurry of speculation about the possible sale of Peppa Pig owner Entertainment One to any number of suitors, the company’s Board issued a release stating, “it is considering its strategic options, which may include a sale of the Company in response to interest it has received from various parties.”  Furthermore, the Canada-based Entertainment One has appointed J.P. Morgan and Credit Suisse to coordinate the review for the board.  There is no confirmation that an offer to purchase the company will actually be made.  In addition to owning the preschool property Peppa Pig, Entertainment One holds the distribution rights for the Twilight Saga movies for the UK and Canada.  The company has a distribution rights library that includes 20,000+ film and TV titles, 2,500 hours of TV programming and 45,000 music tracks.

LICENSING and MARKETING

BBC Worldwide will showcase a number of new and returning brands to the licensing industry in London at Brand Licensing Europe ( www.brandlicensing.eu) this October 18-20, 2011.  Some of the kid properties that BBC Worldwide will debut at the market for the first time include:

  • 64 Zoo Lane – an animated series about a 7-year-old girl who lives right next door to a zoo.  The zoo animals tell her stories every night.
  • The Adventures of Abney & Teal – set to debut on CBeebies this September 26, the animated series, which features hand-drawn and painted elements, revolves around friends Abney and Teal who live on an island, in a lake, in the middle of a park that is in the center of a big city.  The two live on the island with a group of other characters.
  • Baby Jake – 11-month-old Baby Jake enjoys being the center of attention with his siblings, including his brother Isaac (he’s six) the narrator of the series and also helps interpret Jake’s every giggle.  Jake takes preschool viewers on his imaginary adventures.  Vivid is the master toy partner for the property, Egmont will publish books, and 2|entertain will release DVDs.
  • Deadly 60 – the CBBC factual animal adventure series that is hosted by Steve Backshall.
  • Lulu Zipadoo – a new animated series created by France Televisions and based on books by French author and TV host Daniel Picouly.  Set in the countryside, the series follows the adventures of an idea-filled and resourceful young tortoise named Lulu and her friends.

Jay At Play, a subsidiary of Jay Franco & Sons, appoints Entertainment Licensing Associates (ELA) to manage the licensing efforts for its kid-targeted brands including its Happy Nappers plush line, Totally Kookoo collectible plush characters, and Little Miss Muffin doll line that features dolls that can hide in a little pod.  Each of these toy properties is supported by TV advertising campaigns and will be available for private viewing in Dallas at the Jay At Play showroom.  A portion of all Happy Nappers licensing royalties from Jay At Play products goes to support the Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation.
