Good morning. It’s Thursday, October 6, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Singapore-based animation company Scrawl Studios inks a co-production deal with new French partner Cyber Group Studios for its CG animated preschool series Zou (52×11).  Zou has been presold in 50 countries to broadcasters including France 5 (France), TeleQuebec (Canada) and Disney EMEA.  The series is slated to premiere in Europe on Disney in Q2 2012.  Based on the popular kid’s book by author Michael Gay, Zou revolves around a five-year-old zebra and his extended family as he earns his stripes.

LICENSING

Chapman Entertainment appoints CPLG as the new licensing agent for its preschool properties Fifi and the Flowertots, Roary the Racing Car, Raa Raa the Noisy Lion and Little Charley Bear in a three-year worldwide deal (excluding Australia and the US).  CPLG will showcase the properties later this month in London at Brand Licensing Europe.  Target Entertainment will continue to represent Fifi, Roary and Raa Raa for international TV sales and HIT Entertainment will act as the exclusive distribution agent for Little Charley Bear, responsible for TV and home entertainment distribution worldwide.

The Wildflower Group, the licensing and brand agency and global rep, in association with licensing agency Creative Properties, complete seven new deals for the infant gift brand Bunnies By The Bay.  In addition to the new deal below, The Wildflower Group is currently seeking US licensees for Bunnies By The Bay in bedding, room decor, diaper bags, health & beauty aids, dinnerware, greeting cards, gift and seasonal merchandise.

  • Signing on as new licensees for Bunnies By The Bay are: G&W Acquisition will launch a line of licensed Bunnies By The Bay apparel in fall 2012 across the US, Canada and Mexico; Cranston Fabric/Quilting Treasures is currently offering brand themed fabric by-the-yard, and will off offer pre-packaged kits and finished quilts and fleece worldwide (excluding Asia); Jackson Fish Market  features online audio and video story recording service where they can record themselves reading of the five current Bunnies By The Bay stories ; and global publisher The Five Mile Press will publish a range of books (board, picture, story, novelty and bath books), with the first titles debuts in Australia in spring 2012  the books will then be available in the US via Barnes & Noble, Book of the Month Club and Scholastic Club, and in the UK at ALDI, ASDA, Marks & Spencer, Mothercare, Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Toys “R” Us, Waterstone’s and WHSmith.
  • Additionally, The Wildflower Group has appointed Copyrights Asia Limited as its Bunnies By The Bay merchandising agency in Japan and RM Enterprises as its agent in The People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong and 15 other nations.  The agency has just signed a new deal with Lerado (Zhongshan) Industrial Co. as master licensee for a range of Bunnies By The Bay products in three Asian nations, which will rollout beginning in spring 2012.

Kids Bop (www.kidzbop.com) enters into a licensing deal with Imperial Toy to develop, market and manufacture a line of Pop Star role play toys and playthings based on Kidz Bop.  The initial products in the Pop Star range includes musical instruments, fashion accessories in current trend styles and colors and including technological features.  Imperial will introduce the new line to buyers this month at the Dallas Fall Toy Preview.  Imperial plans to launch the Kidz Bop line at retail to coincide with the release of the Kidz Bop 22 album in summer 2012.

Beanstalk, a brand licensing agency, brokers a partnership between its client, US Army and EB Excalibur, a division of EB Brands, to develop US Army branded remote control land and air vehicles that will be featured at J.C. Penney stores and other retailers.  The line, which includes the Advanced Attack RC Chopper, Combat Chopper, Humvee, Troop Transporter Helicopter, Gemini, Sky Runner, Land Air Squadron and Micro Rig Fueler, will be available at retail beginning this month.

Majesco Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products, and Bagdasarian Productions (owner of Alvin and The Chipmunks), reveal some of the songs that will be featured on the upcoming dance video game release, Alvin and The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked, which is based on the upcoming third Chipmunks feature film, releasing in theaters December 16, 2011.  Developed by Behaviour Interactive and set for release this November, the Alvin and The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked game includes 30 songs on Kinect for Xbox 360 and Wii game versions and 18 tracks in the Nintendo DS version.  Players will be able to dance along with Chipmunks with their moves tracked on the Kinect and Wii versions.  The in-game song list includes: All Star; Beat It; Hit Me With Your Best Shot; Kids in America; La Bamba; Love Shack; Oh Pretty Woman; Only Want to BE With You; Play that Funky Music Chipmunk; Stayin’ Alive; The Chipmunk Song; Video Killed The Radio Star; Walkin’ On The Sun; We’re the Chipmunks; and Witch Doctor.

MARKETING

Cookie Jar Entertainment and AAA, the North American motoring and leisure travel organization, renew their yearlong partnership to use Cookie Jar’s Richard Scarry’s Busytown brand to educate parents, caregivers and kids on the importance of safely securing kids passengers in family vehicles.  The initiative includes an animated public service announcement, as well as digital campaigns on the parent/kid aimed Jaroo.com (www.jaroo.com), and BusytownMysteries.com (www.busytownmysteries.com), as well as special inserts in the new Richard Scarry’s Busytown toys that debut this month at Toys “R” Us stores and website.  AAA will also include specially created print and digital ads featuring Lowly Worm, Sally Cat and Huckle Cat along with AAA safety tips, in or on its 2011 Halloween Safety public service campaign, 2012 AAA TourBook travel guides, online TripTik Travel Planner, social media sites and www.safeseats4kids.com.  The new Busytown toy line also debuts in NYC at FAO Schwarz (Fifth Avenue) and Babies R Us (Union Square).

MORE KIDS STUFF

TeenNick‘s The ’90s Are All That two-hour programming block moves to its new primetime slot, seven days as week, beginning this Friday, October 7, 10p-12a.  Joining the block this Friday is Stick Stickly, Nickelodeon’s popsicle stick character also from the ’90s, in the new interactive segment UPick with Stick.  Every Friday night UPick with Stick will be hosted by Stick Stickly, featuring the original Stick voiceover actor, Paul Christie, where he will feature episodes selected by viewers via Facebook (www.facebook.com/90sareallthat) and www.90sareallthat.com.  Also, beginning Saturday, October 8, The ’90s Are All That welcomes the Hey Dude, Nickelodeon’s first original live-action narrative series that ran on the network from 1989-91, to its lineup along with All That, Kenan & Kel and Doug.  The ’90s Are All That features a rotating collection of classic Nickelodeon shows from the 1990s.

Disney Channel will premiere Pixie Hollow Games, a new animated special on Saturday, November 19, at 7p.  The special features the voices of Anjelica Huston, Lucy Liu, Raven-Symone, as well as Mae Whitman, Jesse McCartney, Rob Paulsen, as well as the network’s current stars Brenda Song (The Suite Life on Deck), Jason Dolley (Good Luck Charlie), Tiffany Thornton (So Random!), and Zendaya (Shake It Up), among others.  Zendaya also sings the special’s theme song, Dig Down Deeper, which is set to premiere during the Radio Disney Top 30 Countdown on Saturday, October 29 (it will be available as a digital single on iTunes from November 8).  The music video for Dig Down Deeper will debut on Disney Channel on Saturday, November 5.  Saturdays leading up to the premiere of the new special, beginning November 5, the network will feature three Tinker Bell movies at 5:30p, Tinker Bell, Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure and Tinker Bell the Great Fairy Rescue.

BabyFirst, the US-based baby-targeted channel, grows in Asia where it is distributed by HBO Asia.  BabyFirst is now available to viewers via additional operators in Asia including NexMedia, AORA and Megamedia in Indonesia, and CEPCO in Cambodia.  Each of the four platforms are offering the linear channel as part of their basic or kids and family packages.

Dublin-based Vision Independent Productions (VIP) enter into a format deal for its kid’s show Who Are You Kidding? with producer Phil Gurin’s The Gurin Company.  Who Are You Kidding?, now in its second season on broadcaster RTE (Ireland), features kids nominating teen friends or relatives to sing, dance and act on their behalf in front of a huge audience.

Hasbro Studios inks in-flight entertainment programming deals with seven US and international airlines.  The non-theatrical entertainment content deals were completed by Discovery Enterprises International (DEI) on behalf of Hasbro Studios with Continental Airlines, Emirates Airlines, South African Airways, Singapore Airlines, Etihad Airways, Qantas and Thai Airways.  Specifically, Hasbro Studio’s animated series will be available as follows: Transformers Prime on all carrier listed above; G.I. Joe Renegades on Continental and Emirates; My Little Pony: Friendship Is Magic on Continental, Singapore, Etihad, Qantas and Thai; and Pound Puppies on Continental and Qantas.

Veteran entertainment industry attorney, Henry Hoberman is appointed Sr. EVP/Global General Counsel of the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA).  Hoberman will be responsible for all legal, content enforcement and rights management programs within the MPAA, domestically and abroad.  Hoberman has toiled in senior executive positions for range of media and entertainment companies including RHI Entertainment, ABC and The Walt Disney Company, and he was an Equity Partner in the Media and Communications Group at Baker & Hostetler, and an Assistant United States Attorney in Washington, DC.  He has also served as Chairman of the Board and a Director of the Media Law Resource Center, a non-profit, NY-based industry group.
