Nelvana Enterprises, a unit of Canada’s Corus Entertainment, inks a significant content and representation deal for China with Beijing-based producer Ciwen Media Group. The pact sees Ciwen acquiring the exclusive distribution rights to 1,000+ half-hours of Nelvana’s animated and live-action programming, including Franklin, Babar, Rolie Polie Olie, Mr. Young and The Detentionaire, which it will plans to make available across platforms including free TV, cable and satellite and VOD and internet TV. Ciwen also picks up the exclusive merchandise representation rights for Franklin and non-exclusive rights for Ruby Gloom, 6teen and Grossology. Ciwen plans to release as many titles as possible on DVD. The agreement, which will see Ciwen dubbing the programming into Mandarin and other regional languages, covers Mainland China, Macau and Hong Kong. The Ciwen Media Group has charged its Kids and Rights Division with introducing this collection of kid’s properties to Chinese consumers via a combination of on-air and digital distribution and promotional, licensing and merchandising deals across multiple channels and platforms.

The Jim Henson Company signs on further US licensees for Pajanimals property. The Pajanimals TV series is a co-production with Sprout and Sixteen South Television, which airs daily in the US on Sprout during its The Good Night Show and on Saturday mornings on NBC. New licensees, which plan to debut new Pajanimals-branded products from spring 2013, include: Briarpatch (games and puzzles under its My First production banner); BuySeasons (party goods); textile manufacturer Clothworks (a special line of fabrics); and Running Press’ Running Press Kids (picture books and other learning/fun products – releasing August 2013). The Jim Henson Company is also developing a live show around its Pajanimals characters, which will begin touring in spring of 2013. Existing Pajanimals license partners include: TOMY International (master toy licensee); N-Fusion Interactive, (apps); NCircle Entertainment (DVD); SaraMax Apparel Group (sleepwear); Planet Sox (socks), Lightheaded Beds (illuminated graphic kid’s headboards); Starbound Entertainment (parade balloons); and California Costumes (infant/toddler Halloween costumes).
American Greetings Properties and MediaLink, licensing agent in the Asia Pacific region, finalize two new partnerships for Care Bears live events in Asia Pacific. Signing on are Alikhan Live Entertainment and The Life Like Company. Alikhan Live Entertainment is set to launch Care Bears live events, including costume character meet and greets and a musical stage show at various events and locations, for the holiday 2012 season in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. The Life Like Company will offers Care Bears live events in Australia and New Zealand, including costume character meet and greets as well as a 30-minute musical character show featuring a combination of pre-recorded character voices and a human host.
Sparky Animation appoints Square Licensing as the UK licensing agent for its K7-12 targeted animated series, Fleabag Monkeyface. Based on the popular books by the writing duo Knife & Packer and published by Walker Books, Fleabag Monkeyface can currently be seen on CITV (UK) weekday afternoons. The comedy follows the adventures of Fleabag Monkeyface, a man-made half-monkey/half-boy, and his two creators, Gene and Gerald, who love everything gross and disgusting.
Turner CN Enterprises heads to Brand Licensing Europe 2012 in London next week where it will present updated properties, including Ben 10 Omniverse, Adventure Time, The Amazing World of Gumball, LazyTown and the digital brand Toonix. Turner will also showcase the opportunities available through partnerships with the company’s in-house ad sales division, Turner Media Innovations (TMI), for a number of its 19 branded channels (26 languages) in 100+ territories. Adventure Time toys and products are set to launch across EMEA at retail in Q4 2012. The new LazyTown series is slated to debut in spring 2013 across Turner’s Boomerang and Cartoonito TV channels throughout EMEA. Additionally, Bananas in Pyjamas and Jelly Jamm will also see new series debuts on Cartoonito and free-to-air channels across EMEA.
Moomin Characters OY, the copyright holder of the Moomins, and its licensing agent, Bulls Licensing, will showcase the Moomin brand next week at Brand Licensing Europe. Plans for The Moomins include expanding the licensing program around the world as preparations for the 100-year anniversary in 2014 are being made. Created by Tove Jansson, the first Moomin books was published in 1945, and the first animated series debuted in 1969 and has since aired in 124+ countries, with a wide range of products currently available.
Aardman Digital and CBBC (UK) launch the new online game, Hero Squad: Rapid Response, in conjunction with the debut of the new CBBC series Hero Squad. The weekly TV series, which launched on Monday (6:15p), is hosted by Rav Wilding, a former Police officer and on-air talent including as CBBC’s host of Cop School, who guides wannabe heroes as they are sent on rescue adventures. Designed to further engage kids in the new series, Aardman Digital created the arcade game Hero Squad: Rapid Response, which lives on CBBC.co.uk (www.bbc.co.uk/cbbc/games/hero-squad-game) relies on player control and reaction as well as speed, focusing on three of the services in particular; Sea Rescue, Fire Rescue and Air Rescue.
Singapore-based animation studio Monstrou inks a co-production partnership with Spain-based production company Sweatbox and broadcaster Televisio de Catalunya (TV3), to create the 3D animated action/adventure series Nightbreeds (26×23). Targeted to Tweens 9-12, Nightbreeds revolves around a human boy and a vampire girl as they work together to battle against a rival clan and its evil leader, as they search for an ancient mirror – the only mirror that allows a vampire to see their reflection and which also grants the possessor wishes. Slated to debut on Televisio de Catalunya (TV3), Nightbreeds will feature characters brought to life via Monstrou’s Vicon Motion Capture system, and is known for its work on co-production Tritans 2. Sweatbox is known for its animated TV movie Talma and the Myth of Agartha and animated feature Chico & Rita.
Studio 100 Media enters into a an exclusive three-year distribution deal at Mipcom with Berlin-based producer/distributor of kid and family programming, Kiddinx Media, for several animated shows. Under the deal, Studio 100 picks up the worldwide distribution rights (excluding Germany and the German and Swiss speaking Germany, Austria and Switzerland) for TV, home entertainment and VOD for the preschool series Benjamin the Elephant (52×26), Benjamin Specials (4×45), the horse-themed Bibi & Tina (39×26), and the new fourth season of Bibi Blocksberg (52×26). Kiddinx Media is part of Good Time Holding.

Disney Channel will premiere the third season of the dance-centric buddy comedy Shake It Up, which stars Zendaya and Bella Throne, this Sunday, October 14 at 9p. The new seasons includes a guest star appearances by Tyra Banks, who reprises her role as the librarian, Alfonso Ribeiro (The Fresh Prince of Bell-Air, In The House) and Leo Howard (Kickin’ It).
Litton Entertainment partners with the National Association of Broadcasters to provide TV stations nationwide with a first of its kind public service announcement (PSA). Produced in partnership with Bridge Multimedia, the PSA features Jeff Corwin, scientist and host of Litton’s Ocean Mysteries, and explains the concept of video description, which is a service available to viewers that makes programs accessible for the blind, the visually impaired, and individuals with learning disabilities. This new PSA will debut this weekend during Litton’s Weekend Adventure programming block on ABC stations. The PSA was created in conjunction the American Foundation for the Blind. A second PSA is currently with the works and will feature Sam Champion, host of Sea Rescue. As of July 1, 2012, all major networks are required to provide about four hours of video description per week. Each of the six series that comprise Litton’s Weekend Adventure is video described. The Cookie Jar Group enters into a content deal with DLA, which develops, integrates and delivers entertainment solutions for digital platforms in Latin America and the Caribbean. Under the deal a number of The Cookie Jar Group’s programs, including Zoboomafoo, Where On Earth is Carmen Sandiego? and Sushi Pack, is now available on DLA’s VOD services in Latin America in Spanish, Portuguese or English.
