Good morning. It’s Thursday, May 19, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. 

Upfront season continues as Discovery US Hispanic unveiled its programming lineup for Discovery en Espanol and Discovery Familia.  Discovery Familia, which includes programming targeted to Hispanic preschoolers and moms, is expected to reach 4 million Hispanic TV homes this year, it will be fully reportable by July 2011, and introduce several new programs, including those specifically for kids in its Discovery Kids daytime programming block.  Joining Discovery Familia’s Discovery Kids daytime line up are the animated preschool series Justin Time and the 3D animated series Rob the Robot.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Germany’s Super RTL acquires the kid/tween aimed, music-based TV series The Wannabes Starring Savvy (26×30), which it will premiere on Super RTL Network Saturday, June 18, 2011.  Following it’s debut on the network, the live-action series will move to its regular time slot on Saturdays at 10:30a.  Created by Doreen Spicer-Dannelly, The Wannabes Starring Savvy (www.thewannabes.tv) follows six high schoolers at an arts academy that doesn’t approve of the dreams of becoming singing sensations.

The classic 1980s animated series Jem and the Holograms joins The Hub‘s programming line up on Saturday, May 28 with a six-episode marathon beginning at 2p.  Jem and the Holograms was a joint collaboration of Hasbro, Marvel Productions, as well as Sunbow Productions.  The Hub acquired the series from the Hasbro Studios.

My Babysitter’s a Vampire, a spoof of vampire and scary movies, will premiere on Disney Channel on Friday, June 10 at 7p, just ahead of the series debut comes ahead of the series premiere on Monday, June 27 at 7p.  My Babysitter’s a Vampire was produced by Fresh TV and is distributed by FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME).  The story was created by Tom McGillis and Jennifer Pertsch, with screenplay by Tim Burns.  My Babysitter’s a Vampire was developed by Fresh TV in association with Teletoon (Canada). Executive producers are Tom McGillis, Jennifer Pertsch, Brian Irving and George Elliott, as well as FME’s Sander Schwartz and Bob Higgins.

Nickelodeon UK‘s preschool channel Nick Jr. launches Help Dora Help, an initiative that aims to bring a love of exploration to young kids at nurseries and preschools across the UK.  The Help Dora Help effort, supported by The Princes Foundation for Children and the Arts, consists of a free activity pack, giving nurseries and preschools educational activity resources, and the opportunity to apply for an educational grant of up to about $34,000.  Developed specifically for this campaign by Nick Jr. and its educational advisors, the free activity pack follows the Early Years Foundation Stage development goals and provides Dora-themed learning adventures.  Each kid includes six activity plans, a teacher/leader guide and other teaching aides all designed to encourage preschoolers to use their imagination, solve problems and develop a sense of physical adventure.  For further information, including details on grant applications and deadlines, go to www.nickjr.co.uk.

Mattel‘s tween/teen-targeted Monster High (www.facebook.com/monsterhigh) doll franchise is partnering with the Kind Campaign (www.kindcampaign.com), a documentary and in-school program with a mission to spread the message of being kind to one another, in a joint effort to stop bullying.  This fall Monster High and Kind Campaign will launch special programs and content specifically for tween and teen girls underlining that it is “cool to be kind.”  One of the first projects will leverage the Monster High animated webisode series to feature content that includes the be kind messaging, including featuring animated versions of the two founders of the Kind Campaign in the webisodes.  The Monster High line is designed to encourage girls to embrace their imperfections and differences and those of others, the Kind Campaign encourages kids to put themselves in each others shoes to make better choices.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Aoh!K Commercial inks two licensing deals in the UK for twofour54‘s preschool series Driver Dan’s Story Train, which airs on CBeebies (UK).  Ravensburger signs on to create puzzle and non-electronic board game rights for Driver Dan in the UK, with the hopes of extending distribution into other territories in time.  Ravensburger plans to release multiple Driver Dan products later this year.  TDP Aykroyds will create nightwear and underwear based on the property.  Aoh!K Commercial is the UK representative for twofour54.  Existing Driver Dan licensees Golden Bear (master toy), Macmillan (publishing), Universal (DVDs), MV Sports (wheeled toys), and BBC Worldwide Magazines (multi-character magazines) continue to create and release products based on the series.  CBeebies has picked up a second season (50×10 and 1×30) of the preschool series, which is currently in production in the UK with 3Line Media and in Abu Dhabi with twofour54 partner company Blink Studios.

The Sharpe Company signs Kids Preferred as the North American plush licensee for The Gruffalo.  Sharpe is the licensing agent for The Gruffalo picture book and animated TV special.  Sharpe, which represents The Gruffalo in North America on behalf of Magic Light Pictures, also recently signed University Games for games/puzzles.  NCircle Entertainment will release on DVD in the US by in August, and in Canada by Phase 4 Films in September.  The Gruffalo book was written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler.

The Juno Company names Copyright Promotions Licensing Group (CPLG) as its global licensing agent for its music-centric Juno Baby and Jun Jr. franchises, which are targeted to parents of kids 12 months to six years old.  Under the deal CPLG will grow The Juno Company’s roster of licensed product partners while expanding the retail base and securing promotional partners.

Taito Corporation, a subsidiary of Square Enix Holdings, appoints CPLG to represent its classic video game Space Invaders across Central Europe, the UK, US and Canada.  CPLG will look to extend Space Invaders across a wide range of licensing categories including apparel, gifts and stationary, as well as develop unique promotions.  Space Invaders made its initial debut in Japanese arcades in 1978.

Hit Entertainment enters into three new Thomas & Friends licensing deals.  LF USA, a subsidiary of Hong Kong-based Li & Fung Limited, is appointed as the new master apparel partner for Thomas & Friends in the US, which will be available at retail from spring 2012.  SG Footwear, a division of the SG Companies, signs on to produce Thomas & Friends footwear (athletic footwear, boots, molded shoes, sandals and slippers), and ABG Accessories will produce Thomas & Friends themed headwear, rainwear, umbrellas and cold weather outerwear.  As the new master apparel licensee for the property in the US, LF USA’s AME Sportswear division will design, produce and market Thomas & Friends apparel sets and separates. This expands on the existing LF USA and Hit partnership for Thomas & Friends sleepwear.

Shine Group completes new licensing partnerships for its kid-targeted cooking competition series MasterChef and Junior MasterChef series. Targeted to K8-12, Junior MasterChef is produced by Shine TV and airs on CBBC (UK) and Network 10 (Australia), with localized productions of the series in the words for France, Greece and Indonesia for both series.  The second season of Junior MasterChef Australia is set to air in Q4 2011.  New categories being targeted include publishing, toys and accessories for Junior MasterChef, and food, event/experiences, brand partnerships and promotions for both MasterChef and Junior MasterChef.
