Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 29, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

Cartoon Network, which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year, held its annual upfront presentation yesterday afternoon at New York’s Roseland Ballroom during which it unveiled both new and returning series for its 2012-13 programming lineup. Cartoon Network’s plans include a new sketch comedy series from Nick Cannon, the world premiere of DreamWorks Dragons: The Series, as well as the debut of the web-based property Annoying Orange, and the newest and much anticipated chapter of Ben 10, Ben 10: Omniverse. Coming off the success of last year’s Ninjago launch, the network also enters into a new partnership with LEGO for a second series. Additionally, a third Cartoon Network Hall of Game Awards special, created and again produced in association with IMG Media, is slated for early 2013. Cartoon Network also renewed its ongoing commitment to its shorts program, announcing ten original 7-minute shorts, created by diverse and unique talent, will be produced this year with a dedicated production unit at Cartoon Network Studios.

Cartoon Network New Series:

  • Nick Cannon Sketch Comedy Series a live-action, half-hour, sketch comedy series that will feature mischief, high energy and slapstick humor. The cast of the new sketch comedy troupe features teen stars Jeremy Shada (Adventure Time), Brandon Soo Hoo (Enders Game, Tropic Thunder), Shameik Moore (Joyful Noise), Shauna Case (American Horror Story) and Chanelle Peloso (Level Up). Created by Nick Cannon, he will also executive produce the series along with executive producers Michael Goldman and Scott Tomlinson. The series is being produced by Cartoon Network Studios in association with NCredible Entertainment.
  • Annoying Orange the previously announced series is based on the popular eponymous online sensation. The TV series follows Orange and his buddies as they go on a range of adventures that take them from the fruit stand to parts unknown and everything in between. The TV series was developed and will be produced by The Collective. Dane Boedigheimer co-created the TV series with Tom Sheppard (writer – Pinky and the Brain). Conrad Vernon (director – Madagascar 3 and Monsters vs. Aliens) will serve as executive producer for the series along with Gary Binkow and Dan Weinstein of The Collective.  The series will premiere on Cartoon Network this summer.
  • DreamWorks Dragons: The Series this new series picks up where DreamWorks Animation’s feature film How To Train Your Dragon left off.  The animated series follows the continuing adventures of Hiccup and his dragon Toothless on the island of Berk, along with the band of dragon trainers, all of whom now have dragons of their own. Not only will they learn more about their dragons, they’ll also discover new ones and battle against enemies as they explore new worlds.  In addition, the talented cast from the feature film, Jay Baruchel (Hiccup), America Ferrera (Astrid), Christopher Mitz-Plasse (Fishlegs) and T.J. Miller (Tuffnut)will lend their voices to the series, which is produced by DreamWorks Animation and will premiere this fall 2012.
  • New LEGO Project LEGO and Cartoon Network will expand their partnership with an all-new series from LEGO for 2013.
  • Ben 10: Omniverse in this new animated Ben 10 series, Ben will have a new character design that pays homage to his past, and he’ll have a whole new bunch of aliens to battle too. With a little help from his new, by-the-book rookie partner, Ben explores the quirkier side of things in the alien underground and discovers enemies from his past looking for a re-match, meanwhile a mysterious hunter is hot on his trail. Matt Youngberg is supervising producer for the series, which will premiere on Cartoon Network this fall. The Ben 10 franchise was created by Man of Action Studios.
  • Beware the Batman this new animated series offers a new take on the classic Dark Knight franchise, incorporating Batman’s core characters with a rogues gallery of new villains not previously seen in animated form. Along with backup from ex-secret agent Alfred and lethal sword-wielding Katana, the Dark Knight faces Gotham City’s criminal underworld led by the likes of Anarky, Professor Pyg, Mister Toad and Magpie. Beware the Batman is produced by Warner Bros. Animation (WBA) and features CGI visuals. Bases on characters from DC Comics, Beware the Batman is executive produced by WBA’s Sam Register, and produced by Glen Murakami (Batman Beyond) and Mitch Watson (Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated).
  • Total Drama: Revenge of the Island It’s back to the island where Total Drama began with 13 new players. Since the series’ host Chris took the show worldwide, Camp Wawanakwa has been abandoned and turned into a toxic nuclear waste dumpthe perfect place for new and painful challenges. Total Drama: Revenge of the Island is produced by Fresh TV and will premiere on Cartoon Network this summer 2012.
