Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 1, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

The National Education Association (NEA) celebrates its 15th annual NEA’s Read Across America Day, tomorrow, Friday, March 2, 2012. Designed to encourage kids to discover the pleasure (maybe even the thrill) of reading, this year NEA’s Read Across America Day is expected to draw 45+ million participants. This year the book The Lorax (1971) by Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss), coinciding with Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment’s release of the movie based on the book, takes center stage with its message of preserving the environment. The stars of Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax, including Zac Efron, Taylor Swift, Betty White, Danny DeVito and Ed Helms are all serving as co-chairs of this year’s Read Across America. To help mark NEA’s Read Across America Day tomorrow, Efron will also serve as a celebrity guest reader at a national reading event at the New York Public Library. Additionally, the actors also recorded Read Across America PSAs encouraging people to pick up a book and read to a kid – you can view the PSA at www.nea.org/readacross. NEA’s Read Across America is co-sponsored by Dr. Seuss Enterprises (Cat in the Hat is the Read Across America Day mascot) and 50 national partners, including the American Library Association, PTA, NFL Players Association, RIF, Screen Actors Guild Foundation, Random House Children’s Books, Reading Rockets, United Through Reading, Heart of America Foundation, First Books, and Youth Service America. Of course, the March 2 was Dr. Seuss’ birthday, which is why Read Across America Day is held this day each year. For other Read Across America Day related information go to www.nea.org.

MORE KIDS STUFF

In Canada, Astral’s Disney Junior will premiere the special, Jake and the Never Land Pirates: Peter Pan Returns, on Friday, March 23 at 6p (1×45).  The special, which welcomes Peter Pan back to Never Land to enlist the gang to help find his shadow, features six original songs. The second season of Jake and the Never Land Pirates is set to debut on the network Monday, March 19, with episodes airing daily at 6:30p throughout the week. The new season features celebrity voiceover appearances by Sharon Osbourne, Josh Duhamel, Jane Kaczmarek and Tiffani Thiessen in recurring roles, joining the series’ existing voice cast that includes David Arquette, Tori Spelling, Lisa Loeb, Adam West and Ariel Winter. Additionally, online at DisneyJunior.ca (www.disneyjunior.ca) kids can join Peter’s pirate team in the game of Shadow Shenanigans, which debuts today March 1, 2012. Also launching today is Plundering Pup, an adventure where scurvy dogs can follow Jake and the crew’s pup Patch as he sets off on a quest.

V&S Entertainment‘s preschool HD CGI animated series Everything’s Rosie has been acquired by a second TV channel in Italy. Digital kid’s channel DeAKids, part of the De Agostini Group, has picked up the first season of Everything’s Rosie, and has recently begun airing it weekdays. Everything’s Rosie made its initial debut in Italy, as Insieme a Rosie, in May 2011 on RAI YOYO. V&S Entertainment has also partnered with Italian agency Starbright for an Italian licensing program across multiple categories for the property. The Italian licensing program is slated to launch late 2012 through to spring 2013. Licensees who have already signed on for Everything’s Rosie in a range of categories (e.g. toys, DVDs, publishing, puzzles and board games) include Vivid Imaginations, Egmont, NBC Universal, GB eye, Worlds Apart, Zap and Zeon in the UK; and Giochi Preziosi Spain, Random House Mondadori, Panini and DIVISA RED in Spain.

In other The Lorax news…  IMAX Corporation and Universal Pictures will release the 3D CG animated feature film Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax in IMAX 3D tomorrow, March 2, 2012, in 296 Imax digital theatres domestically, and simultaneous the movie’s North American release. The movie is rated PG. Directed by Chris Renaud (Despicable Me), Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax (www.theloraxmovie.com) will also open in seven Imax digital theatres internationally, with additional runs debuting over the following weeks. Dr. Seuss’ The Lorax is the third movie created by Universal Pictures and Illumination Entertainment.

Poptropica (www.poptropica.com), the kid-targeted virtual world, invites its members to get early access to its 25th Island, Vampire’s Curse, today. Meanwhile, non-members will also have access to the Vampire’s Curse Island, but only to a limited portion of the quest until its official public launch on March 22, 2012. Additionally, members that complete Vampire’s Curse Island (www.poptropica.com/island-tour/vampires-curse-island.html) will earn access to a special bonus quest, where they will discover further hidden secrets. EXECUTIVE MOVES

Larry Schwarz, founder and CEO of indie animation studio Animation Collective, announced yesterday that he has exited the studio to establish a new company called, Larry Schwarz and His Band. Schwarz and his band, comprised of his full team from Animation Collective, plan to produce character and story-drive entertainment properties for viewers around the world across various mediums and multiple platforms. David Francis of HandMade Films, which acquired the studio in 2009, is the contact for Animation Collective related issues. Additionally, FremantleMedia will continue to represent Animation Collective’s library of programming with Andrew Berman heading up that effort. Animation Collective’s shows include Kappa Mikey, Three Delivery, Ellen’s Acres, Thumb Wrestling Federation: TWF and Dancing Sushi. Ah – one more thing… Schwarz might be moving on to Larry Schwarz and his Band.. but he’s not actually moving. You can find Schwarz in his same NYC office as always.

Child’s Play Communications has been appointed by Entertainment One (eOne) to manage it US PR strategy. Entertainment One is a production, international sales, licensing and merchandising business headquartered in Toronto, with offices around the world. Under the deal, Child’s Play will be responsible for publicizing Entertainment One’s Peppa Pig preschool franchise in the US. Created by British animation studio Astley Baker Davies, Peppa Pig recently debuted on Nick Jr. in the US. eOne has signed major toy partner Fisher Price to produce a line of Peppa Pig toys.

RATINGS

Disney XD‘s premiere of its new original live-action series Lab Rats on Monday, February 27 at 8:30-9:30p, with an hour-long episode, becomes the top series premiere in the channel’s history (including ad Toon Disney) with Total Viewers (1.3 million), K2-11 (775,000), K6-11 (681,000) and Tweens 9-14 (584,000). Lab rats improved its time period versus year-ago levels (2/28/11) in Total Viewers by +121%, K2-11 up +106%, and with K6-11 increasing +125%. For February 2012, Disney XD delivered its most-watched February in the network’s history in Total Day (again even as Toon Disney) among Total Viewers (317,000) and kid demos, including Kids 2-11 (181,000), Kids 6-11 (138,000) and Tweens 9-14 (118,000).
