Good morning. It’s Thursday, March 11, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Madonna’s and her daughter Lourdes are helping to design Material Girl, a new junior collection for Macy’s.  The line is the result of the formation of MG ICON, a new joint venture between Madonna and Iconix Brand Group.  The Material Girl collection will bow with products ($12-$40) in a range of categories, including back-to-school, footwear, handbags and jewelry, in about 200 Macy’s stores and online at www.macys.com beginning this August 2010.  The Material Girl plan will include the addition of products across lifestyle and beauty categories, including fragrance, from 2011.  Additionally, under the deal Macy’s will have the option to launch further brands with MG ICON.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

With Fox set to release the movie adaptation of Diary of a Wimpy Kid on March 19, 2010, word is work a second movie is under way, per Coming Soon. Wimpy Kid movie producer Brad Simpson says that writing on the sequel, which is titled Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules and based on the second book of the same name in the Jeff Kinney series, has begun.  Kinney’s fifth Diary of a Wimpy Kid book is set for release this October 1, 2010.

Nickelodeon inks a new long-term production deal and has also picks up two pilots.  The network enters into a three-year, eight-figure production with deal with prolific creator/writer/producer Dan Schneider, per Variety.  Nick and Schneider have worked together for many years, with Schneider creating and producing some of the network’s hit live-action series including iCarly, Drake and Josh, Zoey 101 and the upcoming Victorious.  Prior to creating shows for Nickelodeon, Schneider worked on the network’s series including All That and Kenan and Kel.  On the pilot side, THR reports that Nickelodeon has given the go ahead to Brian Robbins and his Varsity Pictures for the single camera pilot, Supah Ninja, about a group of ninja kids in high school, and to writer/producer Steve Tompkins (The Simpsons) for Everyday Kid, which revolves around a boy who wakes each day with a different super power.  There will likely be more to add to this following Nickelodeon’s upfront presentation this morning.

Marvel Studios is circling in on the actor to play Captain America (and alter ego Steve Rogers) in its movie The First Avenger: Captain America, which is slated for release on July 22, 2011, per Heat Vision.  Currently up for the role are Wilson Bethel (Generation Kill, The Young and the Restless), Mike Vogel (Cloverfield), Chris Evans (Fantastic Four) and Garrett Hedlund (Tron: Legacy).  Seems that the actors who had once peppered the list to play the lead, like John Krasinski, Michael Cassidy, and Chace Crawford, have since dropped off the list.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Disney Channel will premiere the music video for the song Make A Wave, performed by Joe Jonas and Demi Lovato, this Sunday March 14.  The song is the anthem for Disney’s Friends for Change: Project Green and will also be featured in the upcoming Disneynature film Oceans, which releases on Earth Day, April 22, 2010.  The Make A Wave video will be available the following day at Disney.com and iTunes, with the proceeds benefiting environmental charity organizations via Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund (DWCF).  The song debuted on Radio Disney last month.

Imax Corporation will release the Disney’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, from Jerry Bruckheimer Films, and directed by Mike Newell, to Imax theaters internationally simultaneous to the film’s release on May 28, 2010.  Starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Gemma Arterton, among others, Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is rated PG-13.

This month PBS Distribution releases four kid’s titles on DVD: Martha Says it with Flowers  comprised of eight stories; Caillou Pretends To be  four episodes of Caillou; Earth Day Girl  eight Word Girl adventures; and Peter Rabbit and Other Fairy Tale Adventures  part of the Super Why!

Fresh TV is simultaneously launching its first interactive characters twitter account, written by Fin McCloud  a character from its animated series Stoked, and its block, Re:Fresh ( www.refreshblog.com ).  New episodes of Stoked began launching last week on Teletoon (Canada), and Fin’s Twitter account will be used to help promote the new season of Stoked that is set to launch in September 2010.  Coming in a few weeks, Fresh TV will debut a second character Twitter account.  Stoked airs in the US on Cartoon Network.  Other Fresh TV productions include the Total Drama franchise, 6teen and the live-action feature My Babysitter’s a Vampire.

Barbie‘s gone Mad … Madison Avenue that is … as Mattel, Lionsgate and AMC partner to launch four Barbie Collector Mad Men Dolls ($74.95/each).  Designed by Barbie designer Robert Best, the dolls are based on leading Mad Men characters Don Draper, Betty Draper, Sterling Copper and Roger Sterling, and will be available on July 2010.  Additionally, Barbie and Mad Men fans can get exclusive collectible sketch drawings of the Mad Men Barbie Collector dolls when The Mad Men: Season Three DVD releases March 23, 2010.  Each DVD set will include one of the four character sketches.

RATINGS

Cartoon Network premiered season two premieres of its live-action series last Wednesday, March 3, 2010 in primetime.

  • Season two of Destroy Build Destroy launched at 8:30p and was the top show in its time period across ad-supported cable with Boys 6-11 (584,000) up by +22% versus last year in the time period and Tween Boys 9-14 (440,000) and increase of +11%.  The show was up over its first season summer premieres among K2-11 (891,000) up +56%, K6-11 (738,000) an increase of +60%, and Tweens 9-14 (533,000) up +46%.
  • The second season of Dude, What Would Happen debuted at 8p  and as the top show on all cable with Boy 6-11 (519,000) versus the time period last year.  The show was also up over last year with K2-11 (891,00) an increase of +16% and K6-11 (658,000) up by +20%.
