Good morning. It’s Thursday, June 7, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

New Zealand-based Pukeko Pictures inks a deal with the Animation School of the Beijing Film Academy and China-based Grand Entertainment to create the International Animation Technology Joint Research Centre, which will promote the development of animated projects and open up the growing Chinese and film and TV markets. The first collaborative project between Pukeko Pictures, the Animation School of the Beijing Film Academy and Grand Entertainment focuses on Pukeko’s preschool series The WotWots. Together the partners will co-produce TV episodes of The WotWots specifically for the Chinese market. The partnership will also see Grand Entertainment creating the annual Sir Richard Taylor Award of the Animation School of the Beijing Film Academy, which will fund winners and outstanding students to further their studies in animation. The new three-company partnership builds on the success of The WotWots in the Asian market. The WotWots has been seen on multi-platform broadcasts in China, including free-to-air, satellite, IPTV, internet, mobile TV.

LICENSING

9 Story Entertainment inks two new Almost Naked Animals licensees, both brokered by The Licensing Shop. Signing on are Titan Magazine, which will launch Almost Naked Animals magazines in the UK and US later this year, and Malu Holland in an apparel and accessories deal in the Benelux. These licensees join a partners already on board such as Character Options (micro-building figurines and playsets), Basic Fun (plush), Underground Toys (talking plush), Freeze (t-shirts), Mad Dog Concepts (sleepwear), ABG Accessories (cold-weather accessories) and NCircle Entertainment (DVDs).

Spain-based producer/distributor Imira Entertainment completes new book publishing deals in Spain based on its new 2D animated series Lucky Fred (52×12). Editorial Planeta (Castilian version) and Grup 62 (Catala version) sign on to release sixteen Lucky Fred book titles between 2012-2014 including electronic books. Targeted to K6-12, Lucky Fred is an Imira co-production with Televisio de Catalunya (Spain), RAI Fiction (Italy) and Top Draw Animation (Philippines). Lucky Fred has already sold 155+ territories to channels including TF1 (France), Disney Channel (Spain, France, Italy, Germany, India, Israel & Australia) and Nickelodeon (Benelux, Scandinavia, Latin America, Asia & South Korea), RTM (Malaysia), e-Vision (UAE), TG4 (Ireland) and Kidz (Turkey). Imira is also rolling out the Lucky Fred cross-platform App for iPhone and Android devices, which features a web and mobile-based interactive geo-localized alien hunt for kids and families to play. Lucky Fred follows the adventures of Fred, an ordinary 13-yr-old boy who accidentally becomes the owner of a super-powered, shape-shifting robot. Before he veered off course, Friday was sent to the Earth intended for Fred’s new next-door neighbor Braianna, a weird girl from his class who is actually a member of a highly skilled secret, intergalactic security force. The new trio of friends work together to save the planet, have some fun and navigate middle school.

SMC Entertainment Group, an entertainment and brand management company, completes licensing deals in the US for the new CGI animated HD TV, The Jungle Book, which will debut Monday, June 11, 2012 on Disney XD. New US licensees for The Jungle Book include: Phase 4 Films (home entertainment and digital distribution partner); Isaac Morris (master apparel partner); Komar (kid’s sleepwear); Insights Editions (Young Readers Book series); Seasons USA (Halloween costumes); Nanco-Nancy Sales (amusement plush and novelties); Pacific Play Tents (kid’s play tents); Barnes & Noble (ebooks); United States Playing Card Company (customized playing cards); and My Idol Pops (figural lollypops). In addition to The Jungle Book TV series, Phase 4 will release a bonus 1-hour holiday special in 2012.  SMC is also developing a strategy to roll the series out across a multitude of digital platforms. Additionally, a dedicated website for The Jungle Book is currently in development. SMC will showcase The Jungle Book at the 2012 International Licensing Show in Las Vegas next week, where it will be looking for partnerships to develop a comprehensive consumer products’ campaign across categories including toy, ELA’s, publishing, games & puzzles, gaming/interactive, apparel, footwear, accessories, back to school, party good, food & beverage, arts & crafts, home furnishings, among others. A second season of The Jungle Book is now in production at DQ Entertainment International, supported by ZDF Group (Germany), TF1 (France) and other European and Asian partners.

Italy’s Atlantyca Dreamfarm, Atlantyca Entertainment Foreign Rights Department, finalizes translation rights deals for a number of its popular youth book series. International rights to Agatha Mistery, focusing on a 12-year-old would be mystery writer this adventure/mystery series the series is in the style of Agatha Christie, have been acquired by Hachette Livre for French-language publication. Also, simplified Chinese-language rights have been sold to Huaxia Publishing House, and Korean-language rights have been sold to Knowledge Power Station. Pierdomenico Baccalario’s popular Will Moogley’s Ghost Agency stories will be published in 10 languages, including in Spanish by RBA and German by Verlagsgruppe Random House. In other deals, the adventures of Klincus Bark will be published in eight languages including Simplified Chinese by Phoenix Literature Publishing, while Sherlock, Lupin and I will be published in Spanish Worldwide by Planeta Destino. Additionally, translation rights for School of Pirates and Voltaire Alley have been acquired for publication in nine languages. Atlantyca Dreamfarm was established in 2011 when Atlantyca Entertainment acquired Milan-based Dreamfarm.

What could be better than Betty White and Tim Conway? Introducing kids to these great comedic talents. The Hub will premiere a new episode of the animated series Pound Puppies featuring special guest stars White and Conway, on Saturday, June 9 at 9a. Also that day, The Hub will debut new episodes of Care Bears: Welcome to Care-a-Lot at 8a and Kaijudo: Rise of the Duel Masters at 8p.

Cartoon Network will celebrate Father’s Day with a six-hour marathon of funny Dad-centric episodes on Sunday, June 17 (12n-6p). So grab a dad, anyone will do, and sit back and watch fatherly episodes of Johnny Test, Regular Show and The Amazing World of Gumball.

Alphanim and Studio Campedelli announce the new CGI animated series adaptation of Calimero (104×11) is set to air on RAI (Italy). RAI is the same Italian channel that ran the original series in the 1960s and 70s. Alphanim developed the new CGI series with TF1 in accordance. Delivery is scheduled for the brand’s 50th anniversary in 2013. Alphanim distributes the series and manages the brand internationally on behalf of rights owner Calidra. Created in 1963 by Nino Pagot, Toni Pagot and Ignazio Colnaghi, Calimero originated as a series of animated advertisements part of the “Carosello” advertising show broadcast on RAI.

Disney Publishing releases The Aristocats App ($3.99), a new storybook in its Disney Classic series, for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. Targeted to K3-7, The Aristocats App is based on the 1970s story and includes features such as story personalization, reading modes for all ages, coloring pages and interactive puzzles, piano activity, “old-fashioned camera” photo feature and rich illustrations, narration and sound effects.

This week marks the release of The Beatles‘ digitally restored 1968 animated feature film, Yellow Submarine, exclusively available at The iTunes Store. The movie includes iTunes Extras featuring bonus materials and detailed art, including an interactive companion booklet. The film’s songtrack album is also now available on iTunes, as well as several iTunes-exclusive Yellow Submarine song ringtones and alert tones of classic audio clips from the film. The restored film is also available on DVD and Blu-ray, and the songtrack album has also been reissued on CD. Bonus features for the Yellow Submarine film include a short making-of documentary titled Mod Odyssey, the film’s original theatrical trailer, audio commentary by producer John Coates and art director Heinz Edelmann, storyboard sequences, 29 original pencil drawings, and behind-the-scenes photos, and a 16-page booklet with a new essay by Yellow Submarine aficionado John Lasseter, CCO, Walt Disney and Pixar Animation Studios. An interactive digital version of the Yellow Submarine picture book is available as a free download for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch at www.iTunes.com/TheBeatles. Candlewick Press has released a new, family-targeted compact hardcover edition of the Yellow Submarine picture book.
