Al Kahn, founder and former CEO of 4Kids Entertainment, joins Pacific Entertainment, creators of the preschool education Baby Genius brand, where he will serve as an exclusive consultant on Baby Genius in the kid’s preschool and education markets. Kahn will help “accelerate the development” of the Baby Genius brand. Kahn announced his retirement from 4Kids Entertainment earlier this year.

Astral’s Family Channel (Canada) will premiere the new Disney Channel original live-action comedy series A.N.T. Farm on Friday, June 24 at 7:30p, which will be followed by its debut on Family OnDemand. The evening also includes a new episode of Disney’s Shake It Up at 7p and on the other end the network premiere of the What’s What edition of Disney Channel’s TV movie Lemonade Mouth at 8p. A.N.T. Farm will air regularly on Family Channel Fridays at 7:30p.
Sprout, the 24/7 preschool TV channel, releases its new Good Night Star free app on iOS and Android mobile devices. Designed for preschoolers and their adults, the downloadable free app features Star from the Sprout’s nighttime block, The Good Night Show, and invites kids to virtually brush Star’s teeth, wash his face, and help get him ready for bed and go to sleep. The app activities include reading a story with Star and other characters, and singing along with Good Night Show songs.
Disney Publishing launches its new storybook app, Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue A Magical Adventure for iOS devices ($3.99). Some of the features for the new Tink app include allowing readers to have some control over the interactive story by ‘blowing’ fairy dust into the scene, tapping characters and objects to bring them to life, among other things. Additionally, Disney Publishing has updated its Tron: Legacy The Complete Story app to now include 40 minutes of Motion Comics.
The animated comedy movie Rio will be released on Blu-ray and DVD in the US and Canada on August 2, 2011. From Fox Home Entertainment, Rio will be available on 3-Disc Party Edition, featuring the Blu-ray, DVD and Digital Copy, as well as in a 2-Disc DVD Party Edition. The release includes more than an hour of bonus features and materials, and will offer fans access to brand new exclusive levels of the game Angry Birds Rio, which of course features characters from the movie.
Paul Frank‘s Julius the monkey is getting a big head … well, big everything. Saban Brands announces that Julius will be flying overhead as a new giant character helium balloon in the Annual Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, which steps off in New York City on Thursday, November 24, 2011 at 9a, and can be seen on NBC.
Ahead of the new holiday 2011 feature film release Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked! (12/16/11), Twentieth Century Fox Consumer Products, in conjunction with Bagdasarian Productions, launches a long-term merchandising program to support the Alvin and the Chipmunks franchise. The year-long effort will increase the Chipmunks presence at retail and will introduce a branding initiative based on the fashionable female rock group, The Chipettes, for young girls. Partners for the campaign include: Just Play (basic, feature and novelty plush lines) with Vivid Imaginations will serve as the UK distributor for the product; Santa’s Best (holiday goods for the new movie); Gipsy (specialty plush line for France); Majesco (video game based on the new movie); Ty continues its special toy lines; Build-A-Bear Workshop will again offer its line of stuffable plush featuring Alvin and Brittany, and pre-stuffed plush of other characters; HarperCollins – rejoins for a wide publishing program (beginning readers, novelizations, sticker books and storybooks); Bendon Publishing (activity, board and coloring books, flashcards and workbooks); Editora Alsto Astral introduces a book program in Brazil; a wide range of products apparel and accessories partners will be offered by partners in the US and Canada including Isaac Morris, H.E.R. Accessories, Berkshire Fashions, Accessory Innovations, JCorp, SGI and SG Footwear; other key partners include Hallmark (greeting cards, ornaments and giftwrap); and Kellogg’s (branded fruit snacks)
BBC Worldwide is tapped by HIT Entertainment to serve as the magazine publisher for the preschool CGI animated series Mike the Knight (52×12). Mike the Knight will first be featured in BBC Worldwide’s CBeebies magazine beginning in November, while a standalone Mike the Knight magazine, based on the series, which will premiere on CBeebies this fall, will be published from September 2012. HIT has also entered into a new licensing deal with Golden Bear, which will represent Mike the Knight in the arts and crafts category, and is set to release products (e.g. mechanical arts and crafts, felts and dough sets) in fall 2012. Scheduled to launch on CBeebies later this year, Mike the Knight is co-produced by HIT Entertainment and Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana Studio.
HIT Entertainment teams with new licensees to launch new Barney the purple dinosaur retro apparel and accessory lines for adults and kids. New licensees include: At Full Speed (nostalgia t-shirts, fashion tops, knit bottoms, loungewear and hoodies for adults, t-shirts for preschoolers); Bio World (t-shirts, long and sort-sleeved tops, fleece and shorts for kids/tweens/teens/adults); Braha (Barney plush puzzle mats); Classic Imports (beverageware, room decor and accessories); Concept One (accessories including hats, gloves, plush backpacks, flip flops and plush slippers, wallets etc.); Ontel Products Corporation and CJ Products (Barney-inspired Pillow Pets); Planet Sox (hosiery for kids/tweens/teens/adults and infant crib shoes); Rasta Imposta (adult Barney costumes); Yoostar is set to add Barney & Friends to its library where users can insert themselves directly into video content.
Discovery Communications enters into a North American licensing agreement with NKOK for the Discovery Kids brand. Under the pact, NKOK will develop a collection of Discovery Kids inspired radio controlled stunt vehicles and interactive products, such as the Shooting Robo Warrior Robot, as well as Discovery Kids-branded non-RC products including a Trace-n-Draw Projector, Space Coaster Construction Rollercoaster, Sewing Machine and Space Ship Laser Tag. NKOK plans to roll out the new line at toy, mid-tier and mass retailers across the US and Canada this fall 2011. Big Tent Entertainment, the North American licensing agent for the Discovery Kids brand, brokered the deal.
On the heels of this week news that Bandai America will serve as the master worldwide toy licensee, Summertime Entertainment unveils further licensees for its new 3D CG-animated music movie, Dorothy of Oz, which is slated for a late summer 2012 release. Travis James is handling the global licensing and retail development for the indie movie. Other licensees that have signed on to support the girl 4-8 targeted Dorothy of OZ movie include: The Awake division of Jem Sportswear (t-shirts and fashion tops); SG Footwear (footwear) and SGI Apparel (sleepwear); Hypnotic (hosiery); A.D. Sutton & Sons (bags, backpacks and lunch bags); IDW Publishing (4 title comic book series and graphic novel); Trends International (posters and bookmarks, and possibly calendars and stickers); Culturenik Publishing (novelty paper goods); Just Play (cut & sew role-play/dress up items, novelty products in health and beauty aids); Madame Alexander (high-end collectible dolls); Attraction Media & Entertainment (3D/4D theme park attraction, which will incorporate footage from the film).
FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) completes new licensing deals for Rebecca Bonbon, the Japanese character designed by Yuko Shimizu (Hello Kitty). Additionally, actress Jennette McCurdy (iCarly) signs on as the North American brand spokesperson for the Rebecca Bonbon products, which are available exclusively at Kmart and Sears. FME, which holds the exclusive master licensing rights to Rebecca Bonbon, new licensing deals include:
- In Brazil: BIC will launch a new line of Rebecca Bonbon stationery products for back-to-school (e.g. notebooks, pencils, pens) in September 2011; Clio Style will produce brand themed backpacks, bags, key rings, pencil cases, make up bags and laptop cases.
- In EMEA: French licensee Avenir Telecom will develop a line of 17 mobile phone accessories (e.g. protective covers, cases and stickers) and also holds licenses for laptop, tablet and computer accessories, which will be available in 30+ countries throughout the EMEA in its 620 Internity stores, specialty retailers and online beginning this month; Germany’s multi channel retailer, OTTO, renews its license to sell Rebecca Bonbon apparel (t-shirts, skirts and accessories for young women) through its website (
www.otto.de ) as well as through OTTO’s mail order catalogue across Germany, Austria and Switzerland; also across the EMEA, licensees include Academy producing back-to-school (backpacks, stationery and paper products) for Russia, CIS Territories, the Baltics and Eastern Europe; BLGS Hometextile (bedding and home textiles) signs a multi-territory deal for Spain, Portugal and Italy; Italian licensee Sicem International will launch a range of ladies’ fashion apparel in 500+ Oviesse stores in fall 2011.
CCI Entertainment promotes Federico Vargas to Director/Sales, Latin America, Iberia and CEEMEA. Vargas will oversee sales across all genres, which includes CCI’s film rights sales division. He will report to Rekha Shah, VP/Distribution and Co-productions. Vargas joined CCI in 2005.
