FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME) enters into a production and distribution agreement with Jakks Pacific and Dentsu Entertainment USA, for their joint venture, the original new boy 6-11 aimed animated series Monsuno (52×30). Under the deal FME will be responsible for the exclusive worldwide (except Asia) distribution of Monsuno programming, and serve as the master licensing agent for the brand worldwide, with the exception of Asia where Dentsu is the master licensing agent. The Monsuno is the first programming project for FME’s Children and Family Entertainment division, which launched in fall 2009. Monsuno will be co-produced by Dentsu Entertainment USA, Jakks’ Entertainment division, and FME, in conjunction with Dentsu’s Tokyo-based subsidiary animation production arm, Dentsu Tec. Jakks Pacific is developing a toy line (action figures, gadgets, collectables, role play toys) based on the new property. Monsuno follows the adventures of group of kids with newly acquired powers as the work to protect the Earth from destructive creatures.
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Disney selects Christmas Day 2011 as the release date for The Muppets, which is being directed by James Bobin and penned by Jason Segel, who also stars in the movie, and Nick Stoller.
Writer/producer Jim Cox (Over the Hedge, Oliver & Company) will write Marathon Media‘s first 3D feature film (title and details are TBA), per Variety. The family targeted movie is based on an original idea and has a production budget of $15 million. Additionally, France-based Marathon has begun production on the first two seasons of the K6-11 aimed animated series Rekkit the Rabbit (each season/52×13), which is described as a mix of SpongeBob and Bewitched. The animated series has already been acquired by TF1 (France) and Disney Channel Europe.

Portfolio International and Disney ink a multi-territory acquisition deal for The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About That! (40×30). Under the pact, the preschool series will air on 40 Playhouse Disney channels around the world, including in Australia and New Zealand (all Australasian countries and islands), India and neighboring countries such as Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan, Seychelles and Sri Lanka, as well as in Italy (Capodistria, Malta, Monte Carlo, San Marino, Vatican City, and Italian-speaking Switzerland), South East Asia (Brunei, Cambodia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Republic of Palau, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam). Produced by Portfolio Entertainment and Collingwood O’Hare Productions, in association with Dr. Seuss Enterprises, Random House Children’s Entertainment, Treehouse and PBS Kids, The Cat In The Hat Knows A Lot About That! is based on Random House’s Beginner Book collection, The Cat in the Hat’s Learning Library.
FremantleMedia is partnering with Australia Zoo and Terri, Bindi and Robert Irwin, wife and father of the late wildlife expert Steve Irwin, to develop and identify projects and opportunities for TV production and distribution, as well as licensing around the world across categories including home entertainment, consumer products, live events, and digital platforms. Initial creative discussions include new TV efforts with Terri and her kids Bindi and Robert Irwin, as well as activity around existing brands Australia Zoo, Crocodile Hunter, Bindi the Jungle Girl, Wildlife Warriors, and The Steve Irwin Wildlife Reserve. Teri serves as the Director of Australia Zoo, the 70 acre zoo set up by the Irwin family in Queensland, Australia 30 years ago. The deal upholds the rights of the current partners and provides an outstanding platform for future development of the brands globally.
Producers of the 3D animated preschool series Zigby are deep in discussions for a second season (52×11) of the series. Based on the colorful books by Brain Paterson, Zigby revolves around a zebra and his pals, McMeer the Meerkat and Bertie the Guinea Fowl, and their adventures on a jungle island. The series currently airs around the world by a range of broadcasters. The first season of Zigby was produced by Avril Stark Entertainment, Zebra (I) productions and Big animation in association with Australian Broadcasting Corporation and Treehouse TV. Zigby is distributed by Studio 100 Media, with Studio 100 Benelux serving as the worldwide agent for licensing & merchandise.
Spin Master appoints Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE), Cartoon Network’s consumer products division, as its exclusive global licensing agent for its portfolio of brands, beginning with Liv, Zoobles and Tech Deck. The new agreement builds on Spin Master and CNE’s existing partnership for the Bakugan brand, which is a co-production between Spin Mater and Nelvana Entertainment.
MTV Networks Asia and GigaMedia are partnering to co-develop the SpongeBob SquarePants massively multiplayer online game (MMOG). The MMOG is scheduled to launch in 2011 in several languages for players in China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Southeast Asia and India. The SpongeBob team at Nickelodeon Animation Studios in Burbank will work with GigaMedia to develop the online world and SpongeBob avatars. This is the first MMOG based on a Nickelodeon TV series, and Viacom’s first to be developed outside the US. The free-to-play model will feature an online store where users can purchase a collection of tailored items to customize their experience, and will also feature a wide range of video and simple Flash-based games.
Coolabi inks further licensing deals for its tween/teen girl-targeted brand Scarlett & Crimson. Extending its UK deal, Ruby Hammer and Millie Kendall (beauty products) will now develop products based on the property for release around the world. Lisa Marks Associates (LMA), the North American licensing agency for Scarlett & Crimson, signs beauty company Japonesque to produce a cosmetic line based on the property specifically for the US and Canada. Set to launch in spring 2001, the make-up line will be developed in association with Hammer and Kendall. The Scarlett & Crimson brand is co-owned by Coolabi and creator Ged Backland.
Nickelodeon Consumer Products (NCP) enters into a licensing deal with Allstar Products to produce SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer Snuggie Blankets, Bendaroos and Touch N’ Brush toothpaste dispensers. These new products are slated to be available beginning this fall 2010.
Cookie Jar Entertainment, American Greetings Properties and Exim Licensing Group (Brazil) enter into a licensing deal with Brazil-based Xeryu’s to create a new collection of Strawberry Shortcake (known in Brazil as Moranguinho) fashion bags and backpacks, which will be available in fall 2010.
Nickelodeon UK teams with Capital Shopping Centers, Manchester Arndale and Sheffield Meadowhall for a summer live tour for K3-10 and parents, which is set to launch next month and run through August. The tour will showcase SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer. Capital Shopping Centers Group will host five venues on the tour. Manchester Arndale and Meadowhall in Sheffield will host activity areas at locations across the UK. Building on the success of Nickelodeon’s tour last summer, the tour is currently scheduled for 14 days this year. Additionally, Nickelodeon Viacom Consumer Products UK is currently setting deals for in-store promotions with licensees and retailers, including retail and affiliate partner discount coupons for families attending the events
Lourdes Arocho is promoted to VP/Toys and Games, Nickelodeon Consumer Products. In her new role, Arocho will lead and oversee the toy team on the extension of existing, new and acquired properties, including Dora the Explorer and SpongeBob SquarePants, iCarly, Nickelodeon Movies and Paramount Pictures’ The Last Airbender, and Nickelodeon’s recent acquisition, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. In addition, she will direct the product launches of the network’s newest shows, Team Umizoomi and Victorious, and will manage relationships toy partners such as Fisher Price, Playmates, Spin Master and Hasbro. She will report to Manuel Torres, SVP/Global Toys, Interactive & Consumer Electronics, NCP. Arocho joined Nick as Director/Toys & Games in 2007, prior to that she was Director/International Licensing & Merchandising, New Line Cinema.
