Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, July 1, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing. And a quick reminder — Cynopsis will be on an editorial vacation all next week, returning on Monday, July 12.

Avert your eyes from the eclipse. Summit Entertainment‘s The Twilight Saga: Eclipse is already breaking records as it had the widest midnight release ever for a movie, in some 4,000 theaters, and largest midnight opening ever taking in $30 million, per Box Office Mojo.  The previous midnight opening record holder was The Twilight Saga: New Moon (11/20/09), which took in $26.3 million in its midnight release.  Additionally, Eclipse, the third movie in the Twilight series, took in close to $1+ million from midnight plays at 192 Imax theaters, which is a new record for Imax, taking crown from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen’s (6/24/09) $959,000.  Eclipse expanded its reach by yesterday opening in a record total of 4,416 theaters with more theaters to be added tomorrow.

MORE KIDS STUFF

MTV Networks International (MTVNI) inks new and renewal deals for Nickelodeon‘s animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, simultaneous to the release of the live-action feature film The Last Airbender that is based on the series.  Picking up the original series are Teleimedi (Georgia) and Top Channel (Albania), while TV3 (Malaysia) renews its deal for the series.  Additionally, Network Ten (Australia) acquires season 1 and part of season two of the series.

Nickelodeon India unveils plans to feature new locally-produced animated and live-action programming.  Nickelodeon India will also debut acquired series including Artzooka and Dreamkix, as well as original Nick series.  Like all the Nickelodeon channels around the world Nickelodeon India has adopted the new network logo and look across multiple platforms.  Additionally, kids can access new games and applications via NickIndia.com ( www.nickindia.com ).  Nickelodeon is available in India in four languages, as a 24/7 pay channel in Hindi with an option for English, and channels in Tamil and Telegu.  Collectively Nickelodeon India is available in 33 million households.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Hearst Magazines Digital Media re-launches its Seventeen.com ( www.seventeen.com ) this week.  Targeted to teen girls, as Seventeen has been for 65 years, the newly redesigned site offers teens the ability to share information with friends from wherever they are and features improved visuals and navigation, and will place a stronger emphasis on video content and social media integration (e.g. Facebook, and new partner Meebo), as well as a new quiz tool and a celebrity news hub.  The new site also provides advertisers with expanded sponsorship and content opportunities.

American Girl is launching Innerstar University, a “virtual campus” that features a range of games, quizzes and other activities designed to further their confidence and strength.  The new girl-targeted environment can be accessed via a code that comes with each My American Girl 18-inch doll, American Girl’s new line of dolls.  The My American Girl line allows kids to create personalized dolls online, choosing from 40 different combinations, including eye color, hair color and style, skin tone, and accessories (e.g. braces, glasses, earrings and outfits).  My American Girl dolls get further life online at Innerstar University, where girls and the virtual version of their doll can explore.  The My American Girl dolls will be available from July 13, 2010, and Innerstar University will likely launch close to this date.  Additionally, American Girl has launched Shine On Now ( www.shineonnow.com ), a site/effort to provide visitors with various ideas about fund raising, volunteering and donating to four select charities.  From July 13, the company is asking visitors to contribute up to 100 free stars each day to help reach its goal of one million stars by July 31, 2010.  If they reach their goal, American Girl will donate up to $1 million in clothing, books, dolls, and money to four charities, Kids in Distressed Situations, National Association of Children’s Hospitals and Related Institutions, National Wildlife Federation, and Save the Children.

McGruff the Crime Dog turns 30 and gets a makeover.  The National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) and Saatchi & Saatchi are set to debut a new animated short (1×5), Samantha’s Choice, which aims to educate today’s kids about how to “Take a Bite Out of Crime.”  The current mission is for McGruff to provide kids with tools to deal with bullying, with advice including “Stop, Talk & Walk.”  The short video follows a young girl who is afraid to go to ballet class, for fear of being bullied, and is also part of NCPC’s kid-targeted Circle of Respect ( www.circleofrespect.org ) program, which educates kids about how to handle conflict by using respect.

Nickelodeon Consumer Products (NCP) inks deals and launches product around the world in conjunction with the release of the live-action feature film The Last Airbender, which is based on Nickelodeon’s animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender:

  • Riachuelo, one of Brazil’s biggest apparel retailers (about 115 stores), signs on as a partner for boys apparel based on both The Last Airbender movie and the Avatar: The Last Airbender TV series.  The product launch includes in-store signage and premiums.  The partnership, which launched in 2009, also features The Backyardigans and SpongeBob SquarePants. The retailer will also debut a Dora the Explorer line in August and an iCarly collection this October.
  • In the UK, NCP is teaming up with footwear retailer Clarks for a multi-property back-to-school promotions deal.  The deal, for Clark’s Bootleg brand, runs from July through September and features TV ads, an online competition, in-store point of sale and a special and exclusive pack of Nick Trumps for kids.  The Clarks deal also covers Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants, iCarly, The Troop, Big Time Rush and Fanboy & Chum Chum.

STONE SOUP

Fox and MySpace are teaming up to launch an online search for a teen guy and a teen gal (13-19 years old) to had out the Teen Choice surfboard trophies on stage at Teen Choice 2010, Monday, August 9, 8-10p, hosted by Katy Perry, on Fox.  Contestants can enter by going to the official Teen Choice 2010 MySpace profile at www.myspace.com/teenchoiceawards .  Additionally, from July 12 – 23, teens (13-19 years old) will have the opportunity to win the chance attend the show and help Fox’s red carpet photographer
