Good morning. It’s Thursday, January 19, 2012, and this your first early morning briefing.

The Hatchery and Jane Startz Productions is set to produce films, TV series and TV movies based on the books by author V.C. Andrews. Dan Angel (The Haunting Hour, Dan Vs., The Ben Carson Story, Door to Door), a partner in the production company, The Hatchery, has acquired the rights to the V.C. Andrews library, including existing and all future titles, and has teamed up with Jane Startz (Ella Enchanted, Tuck Everlasting, The Indian in the Cupboard, The Magic School Bus) and her Jane Startz Productions, to develop projects based on the works. Some 70 of the V.C. Andrews books, including the popular bestseller Flowers in the Attic, are currently available in 26 languages in 95 countries. Author Andrew Neiderman (The Devil’s Advocate, published under his own name), has been the longtime ghostwriter of the Andrews books, taking over for the author following her death in 1986. This March 2012 will see the release of the new V.C. Andrews title, Into The Darkness, a paranormal love story.  Additionally, The Forbidden Sister will be published in fall 2012, followed by its sequel Roxy’s StoryFirst Blood, a sequel to Daughter of Darkness, will release in fall 2013, followed by a new two-book series to be published in 2014. Simon & Schuster UK is the long-term publisher of V.C. Andrews.

LICENSING

BabyTV enters into a consumer products licensing partnership with Universal Sales to introduce a range of infant and toddler aimed products, including its home video My First Years library line and audio and publishing products, for the US throughout 2012. The first 10 titles of BabyTV’s DVDs are set to launch in first quarter 2012, followed by the release of various music CDs featuring BabyTV’s musical content of nursery rhymes and lullabies and several book formats for spring 2012 and a Christmas book at drugstore, toy store, music and DVD retail channels. BabyTV is available in the US via Dish Network’s basic tier, in Spanish as part of the Dish Latino package, and in Dish Network’s Chinese language package, as well as a la carte in English. BabyTV is part of Fox International Channels.

Atlantyca Entertainment renews its licensing deal with Telecom Italia for Geronimo Stilton to continue as part of Italy’s National kid-targeted safe internet surfing campaign, Navigare Sicuri, through 2012. The public service campaign includes an original Geronimo Stilton book, Gli stratopici segreti… della rete (The secret ultramice… of the web), created by Telecom Italia and Geronimo Stilton and featuring the 10 golden rules for kids to follow to surf the web safely. Published by Piemme Junior, the book is being distributed at all Telecom Italia retailers and online at www.navigaresicuri.org.

MARKETING

Disney Publishing Worldwide has released a 3D updated version of its Beauty and the Beast: Storybook Deluxe app for iPad to coincide with the new re-release of the animated movie Beauty and the Beast in 3D. The new version of the Beauty and the Beast: Storybook Deluxe app features the story re-told in a new format, which includes games, movie clips, puzzles, coloring pages, and song-along songs from the movie. The new digital book app is designed to be accessible to kids at all reading levels by allowing users to hear the story narrated to them, read to themselves, and record and listen to their own narration.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network HD will launch in South East Asia this week, debuting first in the Philippines on SKYcable tomorrow, Friday, January 20, 2012.  This is the first HD kids’ channel will be included in a premium HD subscriber package in the region. The existing standard definition Cartoon Network will continue to be available in the Philippines on channel 43. The Cartoon Network HD programming line-up will feature shows including The Amazing World of Gumball, Tom & Jerry, The Looney Tunes Show and Chowder.  The new HD channel will also premiere TV specials including the first CG-animated TV movie, Ben 10: Destroy All Aliens, in March 2012.

BabyFirstTV is now part of DirecTV programming packages for no additional cost on DirecTV channel 293 in the US.  BabyFirstTV, which recently shifted to be a public interest TV channel, is available to DirecTV customers with compatible equipment as a free a la carte subscription.  In order to get BabyFirstTV, DirecTV customers will need HD Access and an upgrade to HD equipment.

V&S Entertainment unveils plans for Everything’s Rosie to appear in two more magazine titles. In addition to appearing regularly in CBeebies Weekly magazine, under the new deal Everything’s Rosie will star in CBeebies Animals magazine, which mixes CBeebies characters with pictures of real animals, and CBeebies Toybox, a magazine that features an collection of preschool characters from the channel. The Everything’s Rosie HD CGI animated series can be seen on CBeebies (UK). A third season of the series is currently in production and slated to debut this year.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

The Hollywood Radio and Television Society (HRTS) welcomes three new members to its Board of Directors. Joining the HRTS Board are Paul Buccieri, ITV Studios International Managing Director and President & CEO, ITV Studios America, Michael Kassan, MediaLink Founder and Eileen O’Neill, Group President, Discovery and TLC Networks. Buccieri, Kassan, and O’Neill have all been appointed for a two-year term running 2012-2014.

Breakthrough Entertainment promotes Nat Abraham as President/Distribution, from his previous position as VP.  The appointment comes as Breakthrough expands its distribution operations to include TV, film and digital content. Breakthrough recently formed a film sales unit headed up by VP, Marina Cordoni. Abraham previously toiled for 11 years with Nielsen Media Research Canada as Group Sales and Marketing Manager, and held senior positions at with 20th Century Fox/Astral Distribution, and Toronto-based Audiotrack, where was Co-President.

Rive Gauche Television promotes Tomas Silva to VP/International Sales.  Silva joined Rive Gauche in 2008 as International Sales Executive, where he led the company’s distribution entry into Latin America. Silva began his TV industry career with Buenos Aires-based Dinter Television where he represented TV Globo (Brazil) for select regions. He previously held senior sales positions with APA International Films and Unapix International. Silva has also served as a producer on TV productions including the Spanish soap opera, El Magnate.

The Sharpe Company names Rosa Hernandez as Director/Sales and Marketing.  She joins Sharpe with a strong sales and marketing background in the packaged/consumer goods business and B2B design-led packaging sales.

RATINGS

Disney Channel‘s premiered its original TV movie Frenemies on Friday, January 13, 2012 (8-9:40p) was the day’s top telecast among K2-11 (2.4 million), K6-11 (2.0 million) and Tweens 9-14 (1.8 million). The debut was the cable’s top show in the time period with Total Viewers (4.2 million).  The Frenemies audience grew over the course of the premiere among viewers K6-11 (+35%), Tweens 9-14 (+40%) and Total Viewers (+35%), start to finish.
