CannCynopsis: Kids!
02/04/10

Good morning. It’s Thursday, February 4, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Animation producer Wildbrain inks a deal with Fuel Industries, a producer of interactive brands, to develop TV series, motion pictures, content for direct-to-consumer platforms and consumer products based on Fuel’s entertainment properties.  Current Fuel properties in development and/or in production at Wildbrain include:

  • AllGirlArcade .com – girl-targeted game portal and virtual world (Spark City) based on ‘Clik Stars’.
  • Fairies and Dragons – the girl/boy-aimed property featuring four fairies and their elemental dragon friends.  Popular in Europe, the property has was already featured as the world’s first digital McDonald’s Happy Meal.
  • Sideway – revolves around Noz, a rebellious NY youth and underground graffiti artist, and his mysterious adventures through the realm of a 2D world that comes to life on the city’s walls.
  • Tetsurai - Set in an alternate industrial future (think hissing steam and clanking iron), Tetsurai combines TV, an MMO, an arcade fighter and a role-playing game in a dark, sci-fi package.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Nick Cannon takes over Nickelodeon with the premiere of School Gyrls, a new 1hr musical comedy TV movie that he both wrote and directed, on Sunday, February 21 at 7p.  The TV movie will be followed at 8p by the network debut of the feature film Drumline, which stars Cannon.  School Gyrls revolves around three freshmen, each with a unique personality but that all love to sing/dance, who meet at an exclusive girls boarding school and go up against a group of mean girls in a competition.  School Gyrls features the real eponymous music group, discovered by Cannon, comprised of Many Rain (15), Jacquelyn Rae Pyles (aka Jacque Nimble, 15), and Monica Parales (aka Mo Money, 16).  The TV movie also features special appearances by Justin Bieber, Cannon, Kristinia DeBarge, Reverend Run, Soulja Boy, Angie Stone and Pete Wentz.  Additionally, coinciding with the movie debut is the release of a new multimedia book series from Simon & Schuster Children Division, beginning with a novelization of the movie published by Simon Spotlight, which will be followed by six original titles based on the girls from Aladdin Books.  This spring will also see Island Records release of a debut album (March 23), the first single “Something Like a Party” bows digitally February 9, and a ten-week tour by the group.  The School Gyrls will also be featured in Archie Comics (issue $607) available from March 24 and/or downloadable via iTunes and Archie Digital.

The third season of Playhouse Disney‘s preschool series Mickey Mouse Clubhouse (31 episodes), which brings the series to 100 episodes, will premiere Saturday, February 27 at 9a, on Disney Channel.  The new season will feature a new physical fitness series of shorts, Mickey Mousekersize (10×3), which is hosted by Mickey Mouse and will debut in episodes this fall, as well as three new primetime specials.  Mickey Mouse Clubhouse airs weekdays at 7:30 and 8:30a and weekends at 9 and 9:30a on Disney Channel.

Glenn Martin, DDS heads to Washington for President’s Day in a new episode of the family-targeted stop-motion animated series entitled, Hail to the Teeth, premiering on Nick at Nite, Monday, February 15, at 8:30.  The episode features a special guest appearance of Chris Parnell (SNL, 30 Rock) as the voice of Vice President Joe Biden.  The episode revolves around the Martin family’s visit to the White House during which President Obama finds himself in need of dentist, luckily Glenn comes to the rescue.  Produced by Tornante Animation, a division of Michael Eisner’s The Tornante Company, Glenn Martin, DDS airs regularly Mondays at 8p.

Super Why!, the literacy-centric PBS Kids series, heads to movie theatres throughout February.  Two new Super Why stories, Comic Book: Attack of the Eraser and The Big Game, will be shown at Cinedigm theatres beginning this weekend as part of kid/family-aimed Kidtoons in-theatre program.

Hidden City Games, publisher of the girl-targeted, horse-centric virtual world Bella Sara, officially changes its company name to Hidden City Entertainment to better reflect the company’s mission to expand its kid’s brands and licensing division.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Cartoon Network Enterprises (CNE) and 3M’s Nexcare Bandages partner to keep things together in a new license deal that will see a new series of adhesive bandages featuring Ben 10 Alien Force and Bakugan Battle Brawlers.  The Cartoon Network characters will be featured on Nexcare’s waterproof range of Tattoo bandages.  Both series air on Cartoon Network.  Ben 10 Alien Force was created by Man of Action and produced at Cartoon Network Studios, while Bakugan Battle Brawlers is a co-production between Sega Toys, Spin Master, Nelvana Enterprises, TMS Entertainment and Sega Corporation, with animation produced by TMS Entertainment.  Other animated characters that air on the Cartoon Network will also be featured on Nexcare Bandages.

Al Ovadia & Associates, Inc., is awarded the rights to represent gymnastic Olympic medalist, World Champion, and Pan American Games champ, as well as a Dancing with the Stars winner, Shawn Johnson.  Ovadia & Associates has brought on Encino-based The Grove Group to work closely with the company and Johnson in all aspects of the merchandising effort.  The licensing program for Johnson will focus on key areas, including exercise/fitness video games and DVDs, publishing, gifts, jewelry, accessories, health and beauty, performance and apres performance wear, and fashion.

Licensing agent Gator Group announces a partnership between Cosmic Debris, creators of Emily the Strange, and SaraMax, kid’s sleepwear manufacturer.  Under the deal SaraMax will create a line of branded sleepwear and underwear for girls featuring combination of “EverStrange” classic images as well as new graphics from the brand’s new styleguide.

Aardman Animations‘ newly Oscar nominated for Best Short Film (Animated), Wallace & Gromit - A Matter of Loaf & Death, is now available on DVD from Lionsgate and Hit Entertainment.  Bonus features on the DVD include a making of featurette, titled How They Donut, audio commentary with director Nick Park (also the creator) and editor David McCormick, a video game demo and an episode of Shaun the Sheep.  A Matter of Loaf and Death is also included in Wallace & Gromit: The Complete Collection, available on Blu-ray and on a 4-disc DVD set, which also includes Wallace & Gromit shorts – A Grand Day Out, The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave.

STONE SOUP

Doodle Call:  The third annual Doodle 4 Google competition is inviting US kids in grades K-12 to design their own Google doodle (a version of the Google homepage logo) inspired by this year’s theme, “If I Could DO Anything, I Would …”  Teachers will need to register their school by March 17, 2010, and submit their students’ entries by March 31, 2010.  Judging the submissions will be creative ten experts (artists, marketing executives, etc.) from companies including Sesame Workshop, Dr. Seuss Enterprises, The Charles Shultz/Peanuts Museum, and Pixar Animation Studios, Paul Frank Industries, King Features, DC Universe Online Video Games, Mattel and creator/artist Eric Carle.  Check out www.google.com/doodle4google/ for further information.

EXECUTIVE MOVES

Animation industry veteran Kathy Page is appointed VP/Production, Hasbro Studios.  She will oversee production for programming produced by the studio, much of which will be featured on the new network The Hub.  Page was most recently VP/Animation, Sony Pictures Television.  She previously worked in production for Warner Bros. Television Animation and Film Roman.  Set to launch in fall 2010, The Hub is a join venture between Hasbro and Discovery Communications.

The Jim Henson Company names Lisa O’Brien as Executive Director/Children’s Entertainment, reporting to Halle Stanford, EVP/Children’s Entertainment.  O’Brien will work with Stanford to develop and produce new projects across all kid’s media, as well as provide promotional support for Henson’s existing long-form and short-form properties.  O’Brien joins Henson from PBS Kids Sprout, where she worked with Henson on its short-form productions The Pajanimals and Musical Mornings with Coo, as well as co-creating/writing The Good Night Show and overseeing production of the channel’s branding elements, interstitials and promotional campaigns.  She previously toiled as Creative Director for Disney Channel on-air/short-form programming as well as an independent writer/producer/director.

Howard W. Reeves, longtime publisher of Abrams Books for Young Readers and Amulet Books, will become editor-at-large at Abrams, per Publishers Weekly.  Reeves led the kid’s divisions of both imprints since they launched.  He also served as editor for many books including those by Graeme Base, Tonya Bolden, Lauren de Brunhoff, Stephen Huneck, and Daniel Kirk, to name a few.
