Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, 25, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

MarVista Entertainment completes principle photography in Vancouver on its Disney Channel TV movie co-production Sixteen Wishes.  The new movie is slated premiere on Disney Channel US this summer and then rollout on other Disney Channels around the world.  Starring Debby Ryan (The Suite Life on Deck) and Jean-Luc Bilodeau (Kyle XY), Sixteen Wishes is a comedy about a girl who has been planning her 16the birthday since she was little and over time has created a secret wish list that she has taped to her closet door.  What starts off as a bad birthday turns the corner when a box of sixteen birthday candles arrives and the wishes on her list begin to come true, until she makes one wish on a candle that changes things forever.

This spring DirecTV will begin offering subscribers Common Sense Media‘s age-based “easy-to-understand on screen” content ratings and reviews via its TV programming guide. The goal is to continue providing parents/adults with information to make informed programming choices for their families.  With the new service customers will be able to access the content information on the on-screen program guide by clicking the “info” button on their remote control.  Prior to this DirecTV and Common Sense Media have made kid-friendly ratings information available via for the last year.

George Lopez will lend his voice to Speedy Gonzales in the new mixed live-action and CG animated feature film based on the Looney Tunes character from New Line and Warner Bros, per Heat Vision.  The Speedy movie will be written by Alec Sokolow and Joel Choen, who also co-penned Toy Story and two Garfield movies among others.  Lopez with Anne Lopez and Lynette Ramirez will produce the movie for George Lopez Presents, along with Jerry Weintraub, Tracy Ryerson and Jill Arthur.  According to the report the movie will be set in the present and the character/brand will also be updated to move Speedy away from long held criticisms that he embodies ethnic/racial stereotypes.

Disney Channel begins production on a second season of its series Jonas, starring the Jonas Brothers, Kevin, Joe and Nick.  In the new season the guys and their friends Stella and Macy spend the summer in Hollywood, with Joe getting a part in a movie, Kevin working with a famous movie director, and Nick taking up surfing while writing songs for the group’s new album.  In other Kevin, Joe and Nick news, the newest installment of the short-form series Jonas Brothers: Living The Dream 2 (11 segments), which takes viewers on tour with Jonas Brothers, debuts Sunday, March 21 at 8:55p on Disney Channel.  The second chapter of the short-form series looks at the brother’s favorite charities and how they stay healthy on tour, among other things.

The Jumpitz Corporation teams with the American Forces Network (AFN) and Armed Forces Entertainment (AFE) to air Jumpitz kids’ content and will bring its live concert, Jumpitz Live!,  to military families on US bases in the UK, Germany, Belgium and Italy this summer.

Grosset & Dunlap, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group, will publish Disney’s Classic Pooh books under a deal between Penguin Young Readers Group and Disney Licensed Publishing, an imprint of Disney Book Group, which in turn is a division of Disney Publishing Worldwide. This is the first time that a US publisher will create a new series of stories based on A.A. Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh adventures, and illustrate them in the style created by E.H Shepard in the original book. The first four books will be published in April 2010 with three more books set for summer 2010.  Grosset & Dunlap will publish new Pooh books in a range of formats for different age groups including hardcover picture books, board books, paperback storybooks, sticker books, and novelty books.  The first four titles include: Pooh’s Bees (board book) based on Milne’s first Pooh story; Tigger’s Breakfast (board book); Hooray for Friends! (paper-over-board picture book); and Welcome to the Hundred Acre Wood (sticker book, reusable stickers).  The summer release titles include: Mind Your Manners (paperback storybook); Grand Adventures (hardcover picture book); and Weather (novelty board book).

SkyJack Publishing inks a deal with Turner CN Enterprises to feature Cartoon Network content in its new Tween 8-12 aimed video gaming lifestyle magazine, Megaton, which launches in the UK today.  Each issue of Megaton (100 pages) will feature 18-pages of Cartoon Network content, 16-pages of which will feature comic strips from brands including The Secret Saturdays, Samurai Jack and Codename: Kids Next Door, among others.  Launching simultaneous to the magazine today is the interactive website , which will feature games, videos, reviews and competitions.  Additionally, Megaton will also offer various free gifts beginning with the first issue gifts: a Tatsunoko vs Capcom A4 sticker sheet; an A2 double-sided Lego Indiana Jones 2/Bakugan Brawlers poster; and an A4 Secret Saturdays card model.
