Good morning. It’s Thursday, December 6, 2012, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

A federal judge ruled yesterday that sports fans could sue the likes of MLB, the NHL, certain teams as well as several regional networks for antitrust violations over how games are packaged for TV and the Internet. The judge ruled that subscribers could pursue their claims in a class action lawsuit alleging that the packaging reduced competition, boosted prices, and prevented fans from watching their favorite teams located outside their home markets. Defendants would also include Comcast, DIRECTV, Madison Square Garden Co. as well as certain regional sports networks.

On the Air

ESPN laid out plans for its coverage of 34 bowl games, including all five of the BCS matchups. Schedule highlights include: at least one game a day for 16 out of the 19 days from Dec. 20 to Jan. 7 on an ESPN platform; as well as six games on New Year’s Day, including the Rose Bowl at 5p and the Orange Bowl at 8:30p. ESPN 3D, will televise five bowl games, highlighted by the Allstate Sugar Bowl and Discover BCS National Championship, while ESPN Radio will broadcast 24 bowl games, including all five BCS matchups. Brent Musburger and Kirk Herbstreit will call their sixth consecutive BCS National Championship game for the company on Jan. 7 at 8:30p.

Meanwhile, the ESPN will is set for Saturday’s exclusive telecast of the 78th annual Heisman Trophy Presentation presented by Nissan at 8p. The three finalists are senior quarterback Collin Klein (Kansas State), red-shirt freshman quarterback Johnny Manziel (Texas A&M) and senior linebacker Manti Te’o (Notre Dame). Chris Fowler hosts and will be joined by Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and Tom Rinaldi and Notre Dame alum Regis Philbin will narrate a tribute to the former Fighting Irish Heisman winners.

NFL games have topped the ratings in local markets for the week ending Dec. 2, with New Orleans landing at the top spot for the Saints/Falcons matchup last Thursday, drawing a 49.0 rating and 64 share. Rounding out the top five were Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Baltimore and Denver.

FOX will bring the famed FOX Phantom Cam to Saturday’s UFC on FOX 5 event, set to run on the network at 8p. The cameras will be mounted on the truss frame near the ring and during an indoor UFC event are capable of shooting up to 5,000 frames per second.

ESPN is offering a bevy of Pacquiao heading into Saturday night’s HBO PPV featuring the Manny’s fourth bout against Juan Manuel Marquez. ESPN announcing multi-platform pre- and post-fight coverage that is set to include post-fight, in-ring interviews, HBO’s behind-the-scenes four-part series 24/7 Pacquiao-Marquez 4, and Marquez-Pacquiao non-televised undercard fights on ESPN3.

Continuing the weekend’s fight theme, mun2 is set to broadcast the Bellator Fighting Championships Featherweight division finals on Friday, December 7 at 11p featuring Rad Martines and Shahbulat Shamhalaev. Ringside commentary will come from host George X and former MMA champion Manny Rodriguez.

Iowa State is getting its own sports channel. Local reports state that the university has signed a five-year partnership with Mediacom to distribute programming from Cyclones.tv across Iowa and bordering states via a fully-dedicated university sports channel on Mediacom’s cable television network. The channel would then televise around 75 university games a year, including a football game and 5-10 men’s basketball contests.
 
World Fishing Network announced a distribution boost, adding more than 300,000 Optimum West digital cable customers in Colorado, Montana, Wyoming and Utah in addition to 140,000 Grande Communications broadband subscribers throughout Texas.

Anheuser-Busch made some changes in its marketing brass, naming Mike Sundet as Vice President of Sports and Entertainment Marketing and Ad Production Services for the company. Meanwhile, current Budweiser VP Rob McCarthy will shift over to Sundet’s old gig as VP at Bud Light, according to the St. Louis Business Journal.

Pac-12 Enterprises named Ann Wells Crandall to the position of Senior Vice President of Business Development for the company. Crandall will manage corporate relationships, sponsorship revenue and services for Pac-12 Enterprises. She joins the organization after a 12-year run with the New York Road Runners, including the last two as the Executive Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Partnerships.

DHL locked in a deal to serve as the full primary sponsor of IZOD IndyCar Series champion Ryan Hunter-Reay for the 2013 racing season. The deal includes DHL image and advertising rights as well as VIP hospitality platforms for DHL customers at races in major U.S., Canadian, Asian and Latin American markets. The No. 1 DHL Chevrolet will make its debut at the season opener – the Grand Prix of St. Petersburg on Sunday, March 24.

Digital Fields

Sports social media platform LockerDome announced that it has surpassed three million monthly unique visitors. The site reports that it has delivered 47% average growth across Facebook and Twitter for its properties (average 4.3 month span, 109,018 to 144,746 followers).
