Media/music/fashion/entertainment entrepreneur and philanthropist Russell Simmons establishes greenROKS Ventures (http://greenrocks.com/), a new company that will develop and produce youth-centric entertainment properties and multi-media platforms, beginning in spring 2013 with the launch of the first in a series of tween-targeted mobile games, greenROKS – Mission G-ROK for iOS and Android. The greenROKS Ventures mission is to create projects across multiple platforms that engage and entertain young people, while also educating them on topics such as health, social and environmental topics. Designed to feature storytelling, music, math and science, Mission G-ROK is a puzzle mobile game revolves around G-ROK, a hip, outgoing 11 year old boy, who is an aspiring music star that has been chosen to save the world before it is destroyed by the world’s worst evildoer.

Amazon.com debuts its new kid-targeted Kindle FreeTime Unlimited subscription service, which features a range of kid/family content such as books, games, educational apps, movies and TV shows. To help parents out and protect kid users, all apps have in-app payments, advertisements and social media removed. A pay extension of its family friendly Kindle FreeTime, Kindle FreeTime Unlimited is aimed specifically at K3-8 and is available to Amazon Prime customers for the monthly fee of $2.99 per child, or $6.99 per family across all Kindle Fire devices. Those consumers who are not Prime members can sign up for the new services for $4.99 per child/per month, or $9.99 per family. Pre-screened for age appropriateness, Kindle FreeTime Unlimited will feature a wide range of content from Andrews McMeel Publishing, Chronicle Books, DC Comics, Disney, HIT Entertainment, Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Marvel, Nickelodeon, PBS Kids, Reading Rainbow and Sesame Workshop, as well as a wide range of games. Additionally, Amazon is also working with Common Sense Media, a non-profit group that provides independent ratings for a range of kid-aimed media content, many of its kid appropriate rated selections are available via Kindle FreeTime Unlimited. FreeTime Unlimited will be available on the new Kindle Fire, Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Fire HD 8.9 as part of a free, over-the-air software update that will be automatically delivered in the coming weeks.

LICENSING

Shout Factory Kids, in collaboration with FremantleMedia Enterprises (FME), will release Monsuno: Destiny, a DVD collection based on the Monsuno animated series that can be seen on Nicktoons, on January 8, 2013. This first Monsuno DVD release is comprised of five episodes of the boy-targeted action/adventure series, along with bonus content including behind-the-scenes videos and character bios. The Monsuno series is co-produced by Pacific Animation Partners, a joint venture between Jakks Pacific and Dentsu Entertainment USA, with FME and The Topps Company. The property is supported by a Jakks Pacific toy line featuring action figures, accessories, playsets, collectables, electronics and role-play products.

The new holiday special It’s A SpongeBob Christmas! makes its Nickelodeon premiere tonight at 8p. Inspired by the classic Rankin/Bass holiday specials, such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town, and the popular SpongeBob song (2009), Don’t Be a Jerk (It’s Christmas), co-written by Tom Kenny (voice of SpongeBob) and Andy Paley. The half-hour special features John Goodman as Santa Claus. The SpongeBob SquarePants: It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! iTunes Extras edition, featuring 30+ minutes of exclusive behind-the-scenes footage, a sing along version of Don’t Be a Jerk (It’s Christmas), among other bonus content, as well as the It’s a SpongeBob Christmas! Album, which includes 11 new songs, are both available now for digital download. Additionally, a limited quantity of special edition hard copies of the Don’t Be a Jerk (It’s Christmas) eBook is available exclusively on www.nickshop.com.

The Hub is looking to viewers to help program its special holiday Naughty or Nice Awards programming marathon. The network launches online voting this Saturday, December 8, 2012 for its first-ever Naughty or Nice Awards (www.hubworld.com/naughtyornice), during which fans can vote on their favorite “naughty” and “nice” moments and/or characters from The Hub’s 2012 programming lineup. The results will be revealed in a two-hour marathon on Sunday, December 22, 12p-2p, during which characters crowned the Naughtiest and the Nicest will each be featured in back-to-back episodes. The on-air event will be hosted by My Little Pony Friendship is Magic’s Pinkie Pie and Discord, last year’s Naughty or Nice winners. Naughty categories include: The Hub’s Naughtiest of All; Most Villainous Laugh; Nastiest Hissy Fit; Naughtiest Use of a Villainous Power. Nice categories include: The Hub’s Nicest of All; Best Hub Jam; Awesomest Good Deed; and Nicest Use of a Heroic Power.

Aardman and Chillingo, a game and software publisher and a subsidiary of Electronic Arts, release the newest and final episode in the game Home Sheep Home 2 this week. The new episode debut coincides with the launch of an exclusive new Mac OS version, on which the new adventure will be available as an in app purchase. Featuring characters from the TV show Shaun the Sheep, the new puzzle in this adventure game, titled Lost in Space, finds Shaun, Shirley and Timmy playing the lost sheep in a new outer space environment. Home Sheep Home 2 is currently available across three platforms, with web and PC download versions developed by Aardman Digital and an iOS version created by Bristol development studio Mobile Pie and published by Chillingo (publisher of Angry Birds and Cut the Rope).

Beeline Interactive, a video game developer/publisher, and Sony Consumer Products partner to develop a new Ghostbusters freemium game for smartphones, which is based, of course, on the Ghostbusters movies. Slated for release in early 2013, the new game will start players as a novice Ghostbusters – going up against a new host of new paranormal activities in NYC. Initially armed with battery of proton packs and ghost traps, players will also be able to upgrade their gear via experiments, nabbing ghosts and acquiring various slimes. Better gear will give a player access to higher paying jobs and more prestige, which they can then invest back into their business. Players will also be able to upgrade their employee roster to create a ace team of Ghostbusters.
