Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 4, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Comic book/graphic novel publisher Bluewater Productions is offering free lesson plans for its non-fiction comic titles, from its Female Force, Political Power, Fame, and Orbit series, to educators and librarians.  Developed in partnership with Chris Wilson, an educator and creator of The Graphic Classroom ( ), Bluewater’s new middle and high school aimed educational lesson plans feature a multi-discipline study of several of its biographical graphic novels and comic books including language, historical perspective, conceptual thinking, and decision making, as well as talking points, exercises and activity prompts.  The program also hopes to encourage kids to read.  Available via Bluewater ( ) beginning this month, the first lesson plans will be are based on titles about historical figures including Hilary Clinton, Sarah Palin and Michelle Obama, as well as authors such as S.E. Hinton, JK Rowling, and Stephenie Meyer, not to mention pop stars Justin Bieber and Taylor Swift.  Lesson plans for additional titles are set to follow over the next several months.  Copies of the individual issues and graphic novels are available at a discounted cost for classroom use.


Universal inks a deal with Melisa Wallack (Relativity’s Snow White movie) to write the feature film Emily the Strange, per THR.  The movie, which is based on the popular Emily the Strange youth-aimed property and character created by skateboarder Rob Reger, will star Chloe Moretz as Emily.  Dark Horse Entertainment‘s Mike Richardson is producing the movie, with Reger and Dark Horse’s Keith Goldberg executive producing.


The Hub gives National Friendship Day its due with a special four-hour marathon of friendship-themed episodes of its animated series and movie this Sunday, August 7, 12p-4p.  The marathon will feature The Hub’s animated series Strawberry Shortcake’s Berry Bitty Adventures, My Little Pony Friendship is Magic, and Pound Puppies, as well as the network’s animated movie Chuck’s Big Air Dare.

P2 Games, an interactive games publisher, releases Peppa Pig’s Party Time, its first Peppa Pig app for iPad, in the UK.  The preschool party-themed app features characters from the TV series as well as a range of creative activities (e.g. Create your invite, make party bags, Let’s make a cake), mini games (musical chairs, pass the parcel, pinata), single and multiplayer game options, and an interactive scarp book.

Skyreader Media, the kid’s interactive eBook publishing division of Skywriter Media Entertainment Group, releases Giant Trouble eBook app for iPad.  In addition to the story, the Giant Trouble app including several features, such as different reading modes (AutoRead, Read To Me, Read Myself), and different touch screen interactive abilities, animations, sound effects, and popular voices talent.

Little Airplane Productions is offering limited enrollment in a unique workshop taught by accomplished preschool TV veterans on every step of creating an animated/live action preschool series from Pitching through Consumer Products and everything in-between. The workshop also features a panel of noteworthy children’s television broadcasters offering tips on pitching to a network.

Lionsgate and Universal Republic partner for the soundtrack of Lionsgate’s feature film adaptation of The Hunger Games, which will debut in theaters March 23, 2012.  The movie soundtrack will feature music recorded by noted artists, which will be featured in the film, in addition to companion recordings including new songs that reflect the themes of The Hunger Games.  The film’s Executive Music Producer and co-composer T Bone Burnett will produce many of these recordings, and will oversee all production.  As previously announced that Burnett is collaborating with composer Danny Elfman on the movie’s score, which will also be released by Universal Republic.

The Moshi Monsters toy line, which is based on creator Mind Candy‘s Moshi Monsters ( ) online social gaming network, debuts in North America this Friday, August 5, with a launch event at Toys”R”Us flagship store in Times Square in NYC.  The Moshi Monster toy line is created by Spin Master and will be available exclusively in the US at Toys”R”Us stores and its website.

Peanuts Worldwide, a unit of Iconix Brand Group, moves into the digital, web, and social arena as it completes a series of new partnerships and initiatives.  The new ( ) plans to offer new games and interactive content, among other things, in 2012.  Additionally, a new Peanuts Facebook ( ) page recently debuted, as well as Cedar Fair Amusement Parks’ new Facebook game app.  Fans can now follow Peanuts on Twitter ( ).  New partners include:

  • Beeline Interactive, a developer/publisher of video games and division of Capcom, teams with Peanuts in a worldwide deal under which Beeline will license and develop a new Peanuts freemium game for smartphones and tablets.  The game, which will feature the popular Peanuts characters, is expected to be available beginning this fall.
  • Two Peanuts eBook titles, Happiness is a Warm Puppy and Happiness is a Warm Blanket, will be available in digital format soon for the first time via Barnes and Noble Nook apps and ( ).
  • iVerse, a digital distributor of comic books and strips for mobile platforms, will release vintage Peanuts comic strips for purchase beginning September 2011 via iTunes.  The first two collections include It’s a Dog’s Life, Snoopy and It’s a Big World, Charlie Brown.
  • Kaboom!, an imprint of Boom! Studios, recently released Happiness is a Warm Blanket as a print graphic novel, and as a downloadable digital version available for purchase via Comixology’s IOS app, as well as a Peanuts branded app both available via iTunes.  Further graphic novel titles under the partnership will be released.

Marvel Entertainment and Williams-Sonoma partner to introduce an collection of Super Hero kitchen and bakeware products that were designed for Williams-Sonoma, where the line will be exclusively available at retail and online.  The Marvel Super Hero line features retro character art and graphics of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Hulk, Captain America and Iron Man on (in the form of) products including cookie cutters, pancake molds, adult and kid aprons, spatulas, and iced cookies.


Casting: Scholastic News Kids Press Corp, which includes about 50 reporters aged 10-14, is seeking applications for new kid reporters for the new school year.  Scholastic is specifically looking for good writers with an interest in journalism.  Those interested in the program can find more information and application criteria at .  Applications must be postmarked October 11, 2011.


Viacom International Media Networks (VIMN) promotes Nicholas Walters to the newly created position of VP and GM, VIMN & CIS (RCIS).  Walters is now responsible for the strategy, development and the whole of the local operation and he will manage VIMN’s newly opened Moscow office, while continuing to oversee Corporate Development across VIMN’s Emerging Markets region.  Walters had been Senior Director/Strategy and Corporate Development.


The 2011 Disney Friends for Change Games, a five week long multiplatform event, culminated on Sunday, July 31, with a finale on Disney Channel at 8:30-9p, which was the top TV program in its time period with K6-11 (1.9 million) and Tweens 9-14 (1.6 million), and additionally the top show on cable among Total Viewers (3.6 million).  Over the course of the five weeks, the games reached 37+ million unique Total Viewers, about 22 million page views, close to 4 million game starts for online versions the three featured games, and again close to 1.3 million kids voted for their favorite team’s charity.  The 2011 Disney Friends for Change Games launched on Disney Channel on June 24, followed by Disney XD on June 27, as well as with the online site live on June 10.
