Good morning. It’s Thursday, August 22, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

ESPN President John Skipper told reporters that the company was in preliminary talks to deliver channels to Web-based TV services. He noted that the Internet TV provider would end up paying as much or more than its package of channels on cable and satellite services. Bloomberg reports that the platform service would have to buy “the whole suite of products” if it wanted in.

On the Air

NBC Sports Group will produce a live pre-game show from Notre Dame Stadium this season ahead of every Notre Dame Football broadcast on the network this season. The pre-game show will debut Saturday, August 31, at 3p ahead of the team’s first game against Temple. Starting Sept. 21, the pre-game show will kick off on NBCSN. Liam McHugh hosts and will be joined by Doug Flutie and Hines Ward.  McHugh, Flutie and Ward will also handle half-time coverage on NBC broadcasts, all of which will originate from the field. In addition, NBC Sports Group will produce a post-game show that will run on NBCSN, after three Notre Dame Football broadcasts on NBC.

After announcing a sublicense agreement with CBS Sports Network, ESPN revealed its lineup of American Athletic Conference men’s basketball games, with this upcoming season marking the first year in a rights agreement with the networks. ESPN will carry 63 conference games across its family of networks. Overall, ESPNEWS will offer 23 games, while ESPNU will televise 20 matchups. The schedule also includes a Saturday Primetime Presented by DIRECTV game and an evening stop of a split College GameDay Covered by State Farm telecast for Louisville at UConn on Jan. 18 at 9p on ESPN.

Around the dial and deal in hand, CBS Sports Network will feature a total of 25 men’s basketball games during the inaugural season of the American Athletic Conference, including five appearances by defending NCAA Champion Louisville, five by Memphis, six by Cincinnati and four by UCONN. The action tips off on Saturday, Jan. 4 with a Louisville/Rutgers matchup.

The Bus is parking at ESPN. The company announced that Jerome Bettis has joined ESPN as an NFL analyst where he will appear on NFL Live and SportsCenter as well as contribute to other ESPN platforms starting in September. Bettis appeared as a guest on ESPN shows multiple time including the Super Bowl XLV edition of Sunday NFL Countdown in 2011. He also previously worked as an analyst for NBC Sports.

CBS Sports Network unveiled its own lineup of college football studio programming this season, including the new one-hour series Fast Football that will debut on Aug. 27 at 5p. The series will air on Tuesdays throughout the season, and examine the landscape of college football with a focus on “the speed and innovation that impacts the game regularly and also dictates the action on the field.” Brent Stover hosts with regular appearances by Tony Barnhart, insider Bruce Feldman, CBSSports.com’s Jeremy Fowler, as well as guest coaches and a rotating mix of analysts. In addition, series such as Inside College Football, Tackling the Trends, SEC Tonight, This Week in SEC Football and Lemming Report will all return to the lineup as well with all originating from the CBS Broadcast Center in New York City.

With a feud ongoing, Time Warner Cable is looking to counter US Open programming on CBS by offering digital customers in areas affected by a CBS blackout a free preview of Tennis Channel during the tournament which runs from August 26 through September 9, 2013. Tennis Channel will broadcast close to 240 hours of U.S. Open coverage, including 75 hours of live coverage. Time Warner Cable subscribers also have access to many of the live US Open matches on CBS Sports Network and ESPN2.

Up north, TSN announced that it will deliver 150 national regular season games during the 2013-14 season with 81 games slated for TSN and 69 games on TSN2. The channel’s broadcast schedule includes 72 games featuring Canadian teams in action and the network retains English-language exclusivity of Wednesday Night Hockey. In addition to its national broadcast package, TSN will also broadcast 63 regional Winnipeg Jets games on TSN Jets and 30 regional Montreal Canadiens games on TSN Canadiens.

Mike Tyson makes his debut as a professional boxing promoter with a world title doubleheader on ESPN’s Friday Night Fights tomorrow night at 9p. Friday’s show, promoted by Tyson’s Iron Mike Productions will air on ESPN2 with a 12-round main event that will feature an IBF title fight between Junior Lightweight titlist Argenis “La Tormenta” Mendez (21-2, 11 KOs) and Arash Usmanee (20-1, 10 KOs).

Universal Sports Network carries 84 hours of Spain’s cycling event, the 2013 Vuelta a Espana, starting Saturday at 1p. Programming will feature live coverage of the remaining 20 stages of the third and final Grand Tour of the season. In addition, Universal Sports will present recap shows at 10a on both rest days, Sept. 3 and 10, and following all 21 stages at noon on September 21. Yet another lawsuit. Ten former NFL players are suing to prevent NFL Films from using images of them without their consent, according to the AP. The group, which includes names such as Curley Culp and John Riggins, filed a class-action suit in U.S. District Court in New Jersey seeking payment for the use of their names, images and likenesses from film footage they say was used on NFL Network and to promote the league.

Digital & Technology

With the DIRECTV contract for the Sunday Ticket package winding down, Google reportedly held talks with the NFL about potentially buying the rights to the popular package. Tech blog AllThingsDigital first reported the meetings between the two giants, which have been confirmed by both entities, although the nature of the conversations remained unclear. DIRECTV’s deal expires at the end of the 2014 season.
