Nickelodeon and Studio 100 (Belgium) are partnering to produce a new version of their European live-action series, House of Anubis. The new adaptation of House of Anubis (working title) will be produced by UK-based Lime Pictures, is slated to premiere on Nickelodeon in the US, UK and Australia in fall 2010, followed by other territories at the beginning of 2011. The series was originally series, which follows eight kids at an English boarding school as they work to solve a mystery, was made for Nickelodeon in Benelux, followed by a German version.
Marvel Studios casts Hayley Atwell in the role of Peggy Carter in its new movie Captain America: The First Avenger. While Carter fell in love with Captain America (Chris Evans), while they fought together in the war effort in the early comics, the studio plans to update the character for the movie. Joe Johnston is directing the movie from a screenplay by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely. Atwell stars in the upcoming miniseries Pillars of the Earth and TV series The Prisoner, and has previously been seen in The Duchess, Brideshead Revisited and Cassandra’s Dream. Distributed by Paramount, Captain America: The First Avenger will be released in the US on July 22, 2011.
In other Marvel Studios news, Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) is deep in negotiations to direct the action/adventure feature film The Avengers, per Deadline New York. The movie is currently set for release on May 4, 2012, and will also be distributed by Paramount.
Cary Granat and Ed Jones’ new Bedrock Studios and Arcady Bay Entertainment are working together to develop a new feature based on author Katherine Paterson‘s (Bridge to Terabithia, Jacob Have I Loved and many others) upcoming young adult fantasy book The Flint Heart, according to Variety. Arcady Bay is helmed by Paterson’s son David Paterson, who will also adapt The Flint Heart for the big screen. Granat, the author and Arcady Bay previously worked together on the movie version of Bridge to Terabithia). Publisher Candlewick Press plans to release the book in 2011.
Director Martin Scorsese will shoot the movie adaptation of Brian Selznick’s kid’s book The Invention of Hugo Cabret in 3D, per Variety. The movie, Scorsese’s first kid-targeted and 3D effort, begins production in London this June 2010. Sony will distribute the GK Films produced movie, which will be released December 9, 2011.
In its first trip to MIPTV, Locomotive Distribution acquires B.I. Group‘s Bubble Bubble Cook and Moray Black Productions‘ Job Jumpers from producer, Len Stone. An animated character comedy, Bubble Bubble Cooks is set in a magic cooking school for kids and offers nutritional messages. Job Jumpers is a teen-targeted magazine hosted by kids that takes a look at a wide range of careers. Locomotive Distribution is a division of The Locomotive Entertainment Group.
Elastic Rights entered into a home entertainment deal in Portugal for the teen-targeted TV movie Spectacular! with Big Picture, which recently released the movie on DVD. Spectacular debuted in Portugal on Free and Pay TV in December 2009. Dolphin Entertainment produced the music-driven TV movie for Nickelodeon US, where it premiered in early December 2009. Elastic Rights holds the rights to Spectacular! in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece and Turkey.

Playhouse Disney UK is set to debut season three of the preschool series Handy Manny on Monday, April 19, at 9:25a. The third season (31 new episodes) also includes a new primetime special, a new short-form series, Handy Manny School for Tools (May 2010), and the introduction of 10 new tool characters, as well as guest stars Rosario Dawson, Jim Belushi, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Giada De Laurentiis.
In the UK, ITV‘s kid-targeted CITV channel acquires the new PBS Kids animated preschool series The Cat in the Hat Know A Lot About That (40×30) from Collingwood O’Hare Production and Portfolio Entertainment. The series features the voice of Martin Short.
Marvel shifts its book market distribution in an effort to aggressively grow its book business, and also extends its direct marketing deal. Marvel inks worldwide book deal with Hachette Book Group to sell and distribute its books, effective September 1, 2010. Additionally, Marvel signs a deal with Diamond Comics Distributor to extend its exclusive Direct Market Service Agreement, which will see it continuing to distribute Marvel’s product to the comic shop market.
Discovery Communications enters into a global licensing kid’s publishing deal with Bonnier Publishing. Under the pact, Bonnier will develop an extensive line of Animal Planet branded books, which are set to launch in the US in spring 2011. Showcasing Animal Planet’s “all things animal” theme and the network, the line will feature a range of books for kids 3-13, including unique novelty, reference and activity books. The US deal was brokered on for Animal Planet by its licensing agent, the Joester Loria Group (JLG).
Telemundo launches a licensing and consumer products lifestyle program targeted to the US Hispanic market. To that end, Telemundo has signed deals with licensing partners The Richline Group, IDT Telecom and Arrow Home Fashions, and will work with them to develop lines of jewelry, prepaid calling cards and home fashions, respectively, based on the network’s content. Big Tent Entertainment, the licensing agent for the Telemundo brand, brokered the deals on behalf of NBC Universal Television Consumer Products Group. The next few weeks will see Telemundo and The Richline Group launch branded jewelry, sports and home furnishings, with other categories including fashion and apparel. First up is the Telemundo jewelry line, fine and costume jewelry, based on the network’s series, which will be available first via Telemundo.com ( www.telemundo.com ), and then later this year via home shopping and retail outlets. Simultaneously, the network and IDT Telecom will introduce pre-paid calling cards to Mexico and Latin America, featuring its Futbol Estelar franchise, which will be available exclusively in 7-Eleven stores. These lines will be followed this fall by the Arrow Home Fashions lines of bath, bedding and home furnishings for adults and kids, some of which will feature the network’s Mujer de Hoy and Futbol Estelar brands.
Coinstar’s Redbox Automated Retail, which operates the redbox (redbox.com) automated DVD rental kiosks, inks a deal to expand its distribution with convenience store Kum & Go. Under the deal the redbox kiosks will be available at upwards of 300 Kum & Go stores, up from the current 26 stores. Each kiosk holds 630 DVDs, some 200 of which are new releases.
Universal Pictures‘ President/Marketing, Eddie Egan promotes executives on his team. Michael Moses becomes Co-President/Marketing and will report to Egan. Additionally, in a restructuring of the creative advertising department, Maria Pekurovskaya is upped to EVP and Head/Creative Advertising, where she will oversee newly-appointed SVP/Creative Advertising Jackson George and SVP/Creative Advertising Scott Abraham. EVP/Creative Advertising Frank Chiocchi will continue to report directly to Egan. Pekurovskaya also reports to Egan. An 11-year veteran of the company Moses is currently EVP/Publicity and Marketing. Pekurovskaya, who has been with Universal for 8 years, has been EVP/Creative Advertising since 2005.
