Because today’s young workforce thinks differently about their careers, turnover is a major headache for hiring managers. How do you hold onto the best?
“The number one thing high performers tell us when they leave an organization,” said Bruce Tulgan, founder, Rainmaker Thinking, at last week’s Cynopsis webinar, How to Retain the Next Generation of Employees, “is that they spent a lot of time cleaning up the messes of low performers, that low performance was tolerated, and that there wasn’t sufficient differentiation.”
Twice a year, Music Choice does informal check-ins with employees to let them know what’s working and what’s not – and that’s just part of extensive feedback. “No one in these hallways will ever wonder whether or not they’re doing a good job,” said Nolan Baynes, senior director of marketing. “We’ve learned they are looking for supervisors who are strong, who communicate clearly…. I’m not going to be Daddy, I’m not going to be Mommy, but maybe I’ll be Cool Uncle, who will tell you exactly how it is.”
“From time to time, involve them in your senior level meetings,” advised Grant Stuart, vice president, creative content solutions at Viacom Velocity. “They can see the pressures your under, and they can hear directly from the company leaders’ perspectives. If you’re giving a presentation, have them run your Power Point.”
