Matt Tolmach has resigned his post as Co-President of Columbia Pictures to set up his own production shingle with a three-year deal with the studio. First up he will serve as a producer on the next Spider-Man movie, a franchise he helped shepherd at the studio from 2002, along with Laura Ziskin and Avi Arad. The move effectively splits up the long-time co-production head partnership between Tolmach and Doug Belgrad. At the same time, Belgrad has been upped to sole President of Columbia Pictures. Belgrad has subsequently named Hannah Minghella as President/Production, Columbia Pictures. Amy Pascal, Co-Chairman Sony Pictures Entertainment said about Tolmach’s move, “Anyone who knows him [Tolmach] knows he has been talking about this for a long time.”
Principal photography has begun in Austin, Texas on Dimension Film‘s family-targeted movie Spy Kids 4: All The Time In The World. Directed by Robert Rodriguez (who directed the previous three Spy Kids movies), he also penned the screenplay and is producing the movie with Elizabeth Avellan under their Troublemaker Studios production banner. Bob and Harvey Weinstein are executive producing the movie, which is slated for release in 3D on August 19, 2011. The cast for Spy Kids 4 includes Jessica Alba, Jeremy Piven, Joel McHale, and as the kids Rowan Blanchard and Mason Cook. Reprising their Spy Kids roles from the previous movies are Antonio Banderas, Danny Trejo, Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara. The previous movies Spy Kids (3/30/2001), Spy Kids 2: Island of Lost Dreams (8/7/2002), and Spy Kids 3D: Game Over (7/25/2003), collectively grossed $450+ million worldwide.

ReelzChannel is celebrating the upcoming release of Warner Bros. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1, with five Potter-centric episodes of its Hollywood’s Top Ten. Fans are invited to go online ( www.reelz.com/pottervoting) and vote on lists, such as the top ten Harry Potter mythical creatures, challenges and tasks, Snape sneers, villains not Voldemort among other categories, now through November 5, 2010. The holidays come to Disney Channel and Disney XD with new seasonal episodes Sonny With A Chance, The Suite Life on Deck, Phineas and Ferb, Zeke and Luther, Handy Manny and Special Agent Oso, beginning November 28. The holiday celebration also includes the debut of a new special, So Random!, with guest star Joe Jonas and based on show within a show on Sonny With A Chance, and an multi-platform presentation of the extended version of the special Phineas and Ferb Christmas vacation. Additionally, both channels will launch holiday-themed websites for December ( www.disneychannel.com/holiday, www.disneyxd.com/holiday) offering holiday themed content, games and daily virtual gifts (e.g. printable holiday cards, wallpapers, screensavers). Some of the content allow users to send a specialized Phineas and Ferb holiday card that lets them direct the characters to perform in various holiday activities in the Winter Wonderland – At Your Command! application, or put characters from both networks in a virtual snowglobe. The holiday programming schedule includes:
Agency for the Performing Arts (APA) inks a representation deal with comic book/graphic novel publisher Bluewater Productions. Under the deal APA will represent Bluewater’s properties for TV, film, video games and ancillary business and branding. Bluewater has had great success with titles including 10th Muse, VSS and Legend of Isis, as well as their newer endeavors with biography comics, including Fame (titles focusing on the cast of Glee, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, Danica Patrick among others), Female Force (Betty White, Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama, Condoleeza Rice) and Political Power (Barack Obama, Colin Powell, Ronald Reagan). Bluewater is maintaining its partnerships with Adam West, William Shatner, Lionsgate, Sony Pictures and Dreamworks. Bluewater’s10th Muse is currently in development with NBC Universal.
Electus, Ben Silverman’s multimedia studio and a unit of IAC, partners with Subway, Facebook and Crowd Sourced Hero for Subway High School Hero, an eight-week interactive competition on Subway’s Facebook page ( www.facebook.com/subway ), which is deigned to recognize “inspirational” students and teachers. The social entertainment program and competition, the first venture of Crowd Sourced Hero, invites people to nominate individuals they believe are school heroes and become Subway’s ultimate High School Hero. Voting is open now and the winner will be announced December 16. Publicis Modem, Subway’s digital agency of record, helped to further develop, manage and execute High School Heroes in partnership wit Electus, led by its Branded Content & Entertainment team.
The Sharpe Company is named to represent the North American licensing for The Gruffalo preschool property on behalf of Magic Light Pictures. First published in the UK (1999), The Gruffalo and its sequel The Gruffalo’s Child, are written by Julia Donaldson and illustrated by Axel Scheffler. The Gruffalo is the story of a mouse that uses his wits and imagination to create a monster to outsmart his predators, only to find that his imaginary monster is real. The books are published here by Penguin US. This holiday season the animated TV movie version of the book will air on ABC Family as part of its 25 Days of Christmas event. Puffin Books, a division of Penguin Young Readers, plans to re-release the books in the US, while the two animated TV movies will be released on DVD. Sharpe is seeking US licensing partners across all categories, including plush, stationery, giftware, greeting cards, calendars, apparel, nightwear, bedding, puzzles and games.
France Televisions Distribution is partnering with publisher Gallimard Jeunesse to publish kid and teen-targeted book titles based on the educational animated and narrative TV series that air on France Televisions channel and other media. The first book series will be based on the animated series Le Monde des Mots (WordWorld), for which France Television Distribution has the French publishing rights. The series successfully launched as part of France 5’s Ludo Zouzous in August 2010, with online activities available via monludo.fr (www.mon-ludo.fr ).
Giochi Preziosi Group enters into a two-year licensing deal with Fipo Group Aps for the Gormiti property across the Nordic region. Under the deal, the Danish apparel supplier, better known as Fipotex, will produce Gormiti-branded kids T-shirts, jeans, swimwear, nightwear and underwear for Sweden, Denmark, Norway and Iceland, which will be available beginning this fall.

Nickelodeon makes several new executives appointments. In its Ad Sales group, Nickelodeon has appointed Nelson Boyce to the newly created position of SVP/Ad Sales Strategy & Business Development. Taking over for Boyce in his previous position is Katy Loria, who will serve as SVP/Nickelodeon Digital Ad Sales. Loria will dually report to Jim Perry, EVP/360 ad Sales, Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids and Family Group and Kevin Arrix, EVP/MTVN Digital. In the Nick Marketing arena, Sharon Cohen becomes SVP/Integrated Marketing and Retail Marketing. Cohen will report to both Pam Kaufman, CMO/Nickelodeon/MTVN Kids & Family Group and Jim Perry.
