Cynopsis: Kids!

Good morning. It’s Monday, May 3, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Marvel Entertainment, Paramount and Imax Corporation will release Iron Man 2 for a special limited two-week run in 182 Imax theaters domestically on May, 7, 2010, simultaneous to its traditional theater release, and internationally at 68 Imax theaters, 51 of which opened at the end of the week.  The international release of the movie, a unique move that comes a full week before the domestic open, had a strong showing in its opening with a box office take of $100.2 million, $2.25 million of which was at Imax theaters, per Box Office Mojo.  The early international release was a strategic one for the studios, giving the movie a good head start ahead of the World Cup, which begins in early June and is a huge draw for fans.  Both Iron Man (May 2, 2008) and the upcoming Iron Man 2 were directed by Jon Favreau and star Robert Downey, Jr.

Spanish-language TV network V-me partners with Minneapolis-based The National Theatre for Children (NTC) in a new multi-platform initiative to promote healthy eating and exercise for Latino kids and families.  Featuring characters from LazyTown, the healthy lifestyle-centric series that airs in Spanish on V-me, NTC ( www.nationaltheatre.com ) will take its 25-minute bilingual live in-school show to major US Hispanic markets nationwide, supported by a V-me media package.  The V-me package includes curriculum-based materials developed to support NTC’s show that will be given to kids to take home and share with their family.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Rainmaker Entertainment, a Vancouver-based visual effects/animation studio, unveils its initial original animated feature films, per Variety.  Rainmaker is best known for its work on Mattel’s animated Barbie direct to DVD movies.  First up for Rainmaker is OGO  a movie about a young girl’s adventures and discovery of the Ogo-pogo monster in Lake Okangan (British Columbia), which former DreamWorks Animation animator Jacob Medjuck will both write/direct.  The second title on Rainmaker’s slate is Country Bunny and the Little Gold Shoes, with animators Alison Snowden and David Fine serving as consulting directors, and featuring a screenplay by Bernice Vanderlaan (Life With Derek).  The movie is based on the book of the same name written by Dubose Heyward.  Catherine Winder, formerly of Lucasfilm, joined Rainmaker last year to help build its movie slate.  The studio plans to release its first movie in two or three years, followed by a new film every 12-18 months.

DreamWorks taps Glee’s Dianna Agron to star in its movie I Am Number Four, based on the young adult sci-fi book by James Frey and Jobie Hughes, per Heat Vision.  Produced by Michael Bay and Steven Spielberg, and directed by D.J. Caruso, the movie revolves around nine aliens that take refuge in on Earth after they escape their planet just before it is destroyed.  Number Four, the title alien character – played by Alex Pettyfer, takes on the form of a high school boy and winds up falling for Agron’s teen character and vice-versa.  Things are complicated when the aliens that destroyed Number Four’s planet come looking for him on Earth.  I Am Number Four is slated for a February 2011 release.

Batman 3 on the way.  Warner Bros. will release the third Batman movie directed by Christopher Nolan on July 20, 2012, per Variety.  There is no title or storyline for the movie as of yet  but there is the date.  Nolan is working on a script for the movie with writer/producer/director David Goyer and Jonathan Nolan (Christopher’s brother), which is based on an idea by Christopher Nolan.  As announced earlier this week, Batman 3 will also get an Imax release.  The Dark Knight, penned by Christopher Nolan and Goyer, and Batman Begins, co-written by the Nolan brothers and Goyer, released on July 18, 2008 and June 15, 2005 respectively.

MORE KIDS STUFF

The newest animated series Beyblade series, Beyblade: Metal Fusion, is set to premiere in the US on Cartoon Network on Saturday, June 26 at 7:30a.  Comprised of 51 new episodes, Beyblade: Metal Fusion is a mixed 2D and CGI animated series from Nelvana and d-rights Inc.  Beyblade: Metal Fusion will make its Canadian premiere with four back-t0-back episodes on Saturday, May 15 at 12p on YTV.  Hasbro is the Beyblade master toy licensee for most international markets outside of Asia, and will launch the newest toys in Canada this spring 2010 and then in fall 2010 in the US.

Australia-based Sticky Pictures signs further deals for its animated TV series Pearlie, which is based on the Pearlie books by Wendy Harmer.  The series will make its Nickelodeon Australia premiere today at 8:30a.  Additionally, the first two Pearlie DVDs, Hurly Burly and Magic In The City, will be released on May 5 in Australia under a new deal with distributor Madman Entertainment.  A third Pearlie DVD, Twirly Whirly, will be available from June 30.  Pearlie is produced by Sticky Pictures in collaboration with Nelvana Studio, and was commissioned by Network Ten (Australia) and YTV (Canada).

BBC MagazinesDoctor Who Adventures magazine launches its new website www.dwamag.com , which is targeted to K6-12 and designed to keep them up to date with the latest Doctor Who news.  The website includes a blog from the magazine team, downloadable Doctor Who wallpapers and buddy icons, contests, online pools, information from the current edition of the magazine, and reader letters.  Doctor Who Adventures magazine re-launched on April 1, 2010.  BBC Magazines is the magazine publishing division of BBC Worldwide.

Del Rey Books will publish the new Transformers original story novel, Transformers: Exodus, this summer.  Written by Alex Irvine, Transformers: Exodus was developed in partnership with Hasbro and charts the creation of the Decepticons and the Autobots and the civil war that created the schism.  The book expands on the story told in Activision’s upcoming video game Transformers: War for Cybertron.  Del Rey is an imprint of Ballantine Books at Random House Publishing Group.

The Topps Company inks a multi-year trading card licensing deal with the National Football League and NFL Players, the marketing/licensing division of NFLPA, under which Topps will continue it 50+ year relationship with the NFL.  Topps will debuts its first product for the new season, Topps Football, just before the beginning of the 2010 NFL season.  Topps Football will include a special Gridiron Giveaway promotion, which will allow fans the opportunity to unlock vintage Topps football cards and win prizes.

Huffy Corporation introduces new products featuring Skelanimals.  Targeted to tween/teen girls, the new Huffy productions include a 20-inch girls’ bike with special Skelanimals handlebar bag, pink/black padded saddle, pad set, and bright pink rims, as well as an in-line scooter with four-color grip tape deck and a full design.  Skelanimals is a partnership between brand development and licensing agency Art Impressions and Skelanimals creator Mitchell Bernal.
