Tony Hawk inks a deal publishing deal with Stone Arch Books, an imprint of Capstone, to create the new action/adventure, sci-fi kid/tween 10-14 (grades 5-9) targeted book series Tony Hawk’s Revolution. The series takes its name and theme from Hawk’s famous landing of the 900 trick, a 2.5 revolution (900 degrees) aerial spin, and is set to debut August 1, 2011 with the first four titles. The multi-year deal runs through spring 2014 and will include publication of 24 new titles. Each title (128 pages) will feature a 16-page graphic novel section in the middle and will be available in paperback and hardcover. Penned by Donald Lemke and M. Zachary Sherman, the book series begins as Hawk completes the first-ever 900, at which point an unknown force shatters his skateboard and scatters the pieces around the world. A group of teens then teams to bring the board back together. Additionally, a series-based interactive website for kids will launch May 23 at TonyHawkReadingRevolution.com ( www.tonyhawkreadingrevolution.com ). The site features a game, where kids can search for the missing board pieces, as well as videos, downloadables, among other things. The first four titles in the Tony Hawk’s 900 Revolution series, which features illustrations by Caio Majado, include: Drop In: Volume One; Impulse: Volume Two; Fall Line: Volume Three; Unchained: Volume Four. Hawk and the new series will be featured at the Capstone booth at Book Expo America (BEA) in NYC on Thursday, May 26.
Malaysia-based Animasia Studio enters into a co-production deal with China-based Zhejiang Zhongnan Animation (ZN Animation) to produce a new 3D HD animated TV series, My Brother Is Monkey King (52×11). Created by Animasia Studio, the story and design will be further developed by Animasia and ZN Animation and co-produced by both, with a production budget for the first season of the series is US$5.2 million. Set in a school, the action/comedy series is based on a Chinese myth, Journey To The West, which revolves around a brother and sister team, who with secret identities and super powers, who come to Earth from their planet to see what things are like her and go up against evildoers to protect themselves from being captured.
Moonscoop completes new broadcast deals for the 2D animated preschool series Chloe’s Closet (52×11). Mediaset (Italy) and YoYo (Taiwan) have picked up the series, with Mediaset has also appointed as the Italian agent for licensing and merchandising for the property. Additionally, Pelican acquires the home video rights for Chloe’s Closet for Singapore and Malaysia. Chloe’s Closet is produced in HD by Mike Young Productions in association with Moonscoop, Wales Creative IP Fund, Ki.Ka/ARD, Work Out Factory, and Telegael.
Zodiak Rights, the international arm of Zodiak Media Group, finalizes a deal with agent Bomanbridge Media for Zodiak’s family-targeted That’s My Kid format to air on Disney Channel in India. Sol, Zodiak’s Indian production company, will produce That’s My Kid (13 episodes) in India. This is the newest deal for the format, which has also received recent commissions including: Hunan TV (China) for 13 episodes; TVP2 (Poland) for 12 episodes; Egyptian Ratio & Television (Egypt) for 30 episodes; and a second series of 18 episodes for CTC (Russia).
Family Channel (Canada) will premiere Disney Channel‘s new original movie Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventures on Friday, May 27 at 8p. The movie, which features Ashley Tisdale reprising her High School Musical role as Sharpay Evans, is part of Family Channel’s Night of Premieres marathon that begins at 4:30p, and features six new episodes of its series. Leading up to the premiere of Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure, the channel will debut new episodes of the following series: Fish Hooks (4:30p and 5p); Pair of Kings (5:30p); Shake It Up (6:30p); Good Luck Charlie (7p); and Wizards of Waverly Place (7:30p).
The Juno Company, which creates kid-centric music education products/content, launches its new interactive eBook app The Day The Music Stopped for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch, and Android phones and tablets. Based on its Juno Jr. DVD of the same name, the eBook features Juno characters, animation, original orchestral music, mini games, and touch screen interactive elements. The Day the Music Stopped eBook app ($2.99) was developed in partnership with PadWorx Digital Media.
Viz Media licenses Egg Ball Games the rights for a Hamtaro: Little Hamsters, Big Adventures video game for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. The title features three different game environments and a range of levels, and is Facebook enabled. Viz Media is the North America distributor of the iApp game, which is available now in the US and Canada. The game is also available in Latin America and Europe.
Mega Brands enters into a multi-year worldwide licensing pact, excluding Asia, with Saban Brands to develop construction toys based on the new Power Rangers Samurai series, which airs on nickelodeon. Set to launch in spring 2012, the Mega Bloks Power Rangers Samurai construction toy line will features characters, vehicles and playsets based on the series.
CopCorp Licensing appoints Sinerji to serve as the sub-agent to manage the licensing program for the teen/young adult-targeted Pink Cookie ( www.pinkcookiedesign.com ) fashion brand in Turkey.
Wayne Brady partners with Disney Records for the release of Radio Wayne, Brady’s first kid’s album. The CD features Brady as DJ Wayne, host of a radio show, talking to kid-listeners and introducing 14 songs, in various styles, which are designed to kids with daily life lessons (e.g. good manners, good habits, having fun). The album is currently available exclusively on Amazon.com, and will be available at retailers and other online music outlets from May 31, 2011. Produced and arranged by the Heavyweights (Jack Kugell, Jamie Jones and Jason Pennock), the songs on Radio Wayne were all co-written by Brady.

Poet J. Patrick Lewis will serve as the US’ third Children’s Poet Laureate: Consultant in Children’s Poetry to the Poetry Foundation for a two-year tenure. Lewis has penned 50+ books of poetry for kids, including: Spot the Plot: A Riddle Book of Book Riddles; The Last Resort; The Shoe Tree of Chagrin; and A Hippopotamusn’t; And Other Original Animal Poems. His poetry has also appeared in Highlights for Children, Cricket, and Ranger Rick, among other places. The Poetry Foundation publishes Poetry magazine. The award aims to raise awareness that kids are naturally receptive to poetry and a good audience, especially when poems are written specifically for them.
KidZania bolsters its US management team with the appointment of Catherine Teitelbaum as VP/Trust and Safety. She will be based at KidZania’s Silicon Valley headquarters. Teitelbaum previously toiled as an executive for Yahoo! where she was policy director, and helped grow Yahooligans!, and the launch of Yahoo! Education and Yahoo! Safety, as well as serving as editor-in-chief of Yahoo! Safety. Prior to that she was an elementary and middle school teacher and K-8 Technology coordinator in Northern California. A location-based kid’s entertainment company, KidZania has eight parks in six markets worldwide with plans to expand into additional markets, including the US, over the next two years and launch a new online component in early 2012.
