Cynopsis: Kids!

03/07/11

Good morning. It’s Monday, March 7, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Paramount‘s new Gore Verbinski (he helmed the first three Pirates of the Caribbean movies) directed animated feature film Rango, featuring Johnny Depp as the voice of Rango, opened over the weekend at the top of the box office with $38 million at 3,917 theaters, per Rentrak.  The PG-rated, 2D movie becomes the biggest non-holiday related movie opening domestically of the 2011 so far.  While this is good news for the kid/tween and animation industries, the overall domestic box office take for this year has been low across the board.  The biggest movie opening for the year to date was Green Hornet (1/14/11) over the long Dr. Martin Luther King Birthday Weekend with $40 million, per Box Office Mojo.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cinedigm Digital Cinema brings the new animated The Little Engine That Could to 170 digital movie theatres nationwide this month as part of its Kidtoons matinee program.  Based on the classic story, the new movie features the voices of Alyson Stoner, Whoopi Goldberg, Jamie Lee Curtis, Corbin Bleu (High School Musical), and Brenda Song (The Suite Life of Zack and Cody), among many others.  Universal Studios Home Entertainment will release the feature-length film on DVD and as a digital download on March 22, 2011.  For each DVD sold, up to $0.50 will be donated to Starlight Children’s Foundation. Additionally, Cinedigm is donating about 50 tickets per market (in select markets) for use by Starlight Children’s Foundation families.

Answer to Yesterday’s Trivia:  This “kids” cereal comes in with little marshmellow blue moons, yellow stars, pink hearts, green clovers and diamonds.  Shapes have come and gone over the years and only one of those shapes has been in the cereal from the very beginning.  Which one?   PINK HEARTS ARE STILL IN EVERY BOX OF LUCKY CHARMS  Kudos to: Keith Manzella-Eastwest MG/NY; Patti McTeague-Disney Channel/Burbank

Today’s Trivia Question:  The original of this Rembrandt now hangs in the National Gallery of Art in Washington DC.  A print was used as a prop in the foyer of this sitcom house (tho from time to time was replaced with a mirror).  The painting features a young girl with an item too obvious to mention or it would give away the answer to this question.  What show was this on?   (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone. Unofficial rules: Only the second four correct answers from each time zone will be mentioned; and once you’ve been mentioned in any of the Cynopsis editions, you can’t be mentioned again that calendar week.)
