Good morning. It’s Monday, March 28, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
4Kids Entertainment reveals a bit about the upcoming 2011-12 season of its Saturday morning programming block, Toonzai (7a-12p), on The CW. The core of the new season for the boy-targeted Toonzai block, which saw increases of +25% in February 2011 versus the same month last year among K6-11 and Boys 6-11, will feature new episodes of the Yu-Gi-Oh!, Dragon Ball Z, and Magi-Nation franchises, as well as continuing to feature classic episodes of the Sonic series. While there is no confirmation as of it, the lineup could potentially include the mixed traditional cel and CGI animated series Tai Chi Chasers (39×30), as well as a few other series. 4Kids will also feature some big promotional events for the upcoming season, two of which will be built around franchise milestones, the 10th anniversary of Yu-Gi-Oh! and the 20th anniversary of Sonic. 4Kids Entertainment represents the rights to Tai Chi Chasers worldwide (excluding Asia), which is a co-production of Japan’s Toei Animation and Korean broadcaster KBS (Korean Broadcasting System).
NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT
Sony Pictures moves up the release date of its family-targeted movie The Smurfs to Friday, July 29, 2011, per Coming Soon. The mixed CGI and live-action 3D movie had been set for a Wednesday, August 3, release.
MoMedia International ( www.momediatv.com ), a digital media company that delivers TV and film content to broadcast and digital platforms, inks a multiplatform deal with Italy’s Telecom Italia for several kid’s series, Thomas and Friends and Pingu from Hit Entertainment and Casper and Friends from Classic Media. The deal will see the kids content available across IPTV and the new over-the-top (OTT) TV service Cubovision, which is provide through set-top boxes, connected TVs, and eventually via smartphones and tablet devices.
Foothill Entertainment and TeamWorks, an Italian brand management company, enter into a distribution deal for the animated TV series Spike Team (26×26). Under the deal TeamWorks appoints Foothill as the exclusive distributor for Spike Team in English-speaking territories. Produced by Lucky Dreams, Spike Team is a volleyball-themed series targeted to K6-11, which can currently be seen on RAI 2 (Italy). A second season of Spike Team is currently in the works. Foothill will showcase the series at MIPTV next month.
The Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF) will launch the new animated series Flea-Bitten (26×30 or 52×12) at MIPTV. The comedy features the unlikely duo, a dog and a flea, as they escape the dog pound and set out on wacky slapstick adventures. The series has been pre-sold to Nine Network (Australia). Flea-Bitten was created and produced by Moody Street Kids and directed by Gillian Carr. The ACTF holds the worldwide distribution rights to the series.
Canada-based Kidobi, which offers educational videos online for K3-6, is looking to grow its digital library by establishing new international content partners. Developed by Toronto’s Henning Software Solutions with experts in child development, education, psychology, and kid’s media, Kidobi offers subscribers the chance to create personalized playlists based on each kid’s skills, interests, and educational needs. Barnes & Noble expands its kid’s picture book catalog through a new deal with Nickelodeon, which sees the release of Nickelodeon’s first digital books based on its properties including SpongeBob SquarePants and Dora the Explorer. The new digital book titles will be available exclusively for Barnes & Noble’s Nook Color and its free Nook Kids iPad ( www.nookkids.com/ipad ). Barnes & Noble is currently offering 12 interactive Nook Kids Nickelodeon titles, and plans to grow that number to 20+ next month. The new Nickelodeon digital book titles include Camp SpongeBob, Happy Birthday SpongeBob!, Dora Loves Boots, Crystal Kingdom Adventures, Dora Helps Diego, Dora’s Sleepover, among others. New titles will include titles such as WhoBob WhatPants?, The Big Win, Man Sponge Saves the Day, and SpongeBob, Soccer Star!. Nook Kids features the exclusive AliveTouch technology, which allows kids to find a story and interact with books including easily turning pages by tapping, interactive with text, and zooming in and around the graphics in the story. Additionally, select upcoming Nickelodeon nook Kids titles will feature Barnes & Nobel’s Read to Me feature that allows users to choose between narration of the story or to read to themselves.
HIT Entertainment and Simon & Schuster UK enter into a five-year publishing rights deal for the new preschool CGI animated series Mike the Knight (52×12). Under the deal Simon & Schuster will have the rights to publish books in all categories (excluding annuals) based on the magical medieval Mike the Knight series, which is set to launch on TV in fall 2011. A co-production between HIT Entertainment and Corus Entertainment’s Nelvana Studio, Mike the Knight has been pre-sold to CBeebies, TF1 and Treehouse with further broadcasters to be announced soon. Simon & Schuster UK has sister companies in Australia, India, Canada and the US.
CopCorp Licensing is named to launch and the global licensing agent for Zoodorable ( www.zoodorable.com ), a new property created by pop artist/illustrator Han L. Lee (he also created the Bobby Jack brand). CopCorp has already inked three new licensee deals for Zoodorable in the US:
- Hybrid Apparel picks up the rights to produce/sell Zoodorable branded T-shirts, fleece, 2fers, thermals, junior novelty bodies, tanks, and GWP’s with tees.
- H.E.R. Accessories is granted rights to create a line of jewelry and hair wear.
- License 2 Play takes rights to manufacture a line of plush, plush pillows, and vinyl and PVC figures (all sizes.
Nickelodeon Consumer Products International (NCPI) completes new license for outdoor products based on Nickelodeon properties:
- In Germany, NCPI signs new licensee John to create Dora the Explorer balls and adventure products including binoculars, flashlights, bug viewers, lanterns, and pocket compasses. The products are currently available at retail in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.
- Publisher Selena enters into a deal for a monthly SpongeBob SquarePants magazine for Greece and Cyprus. The magazine features refreshed SpongeBob SquarePants artwork and Selena is developing competitions as part of the content offer.
Giochi Preziosi renews its deal with licensing partner Dino Bikes for an extended line of Gormiti wheeled toys for Italy. The new line of products will feature new designs based on the third season of Gormiti, The Neorganic Evolution, which is co-produced with Marathon Media.
