Cartoon Network hosts the US premiere of 9 Story Entertainment‘s new original animated series, Almost Naked Animals, today on at 4p. A comedy, Almost Naked Animals revolves around a group of free-spirited underwear clad animals that run a beachfront hotel and looking for the maximum amount of fun. Heading up the dysfunctional group is top dog/hotel manager, Howie, who has a relatively short attention span.
The BBC acquires two additional seasons of the new preschool series Postman Pat Special Delivery Service (SDS) from Classic Media. The new Postman Pat SDS episodes (13×15 for each season, for a total of 26×15) will air in 2013 on the BBC. First introduced on BBC1 on September 1981, Postman Pat is the longest running animated series on the BBC. Under this new commitment Postman Pat’s will continue to air on the BBC through to 2018. This September, Postman Pat will celebrate his 30th birthday, which will be marked with a marketing campaign including special events, TV and radio appearances across the UK.
Callaway Digital Arts and HIT Entertainment release Angelina’s New Ballet Teacher App for iPad. Based on the PBS Kids TV episode of the same name from the preschool series Angelina Ballerina The Next Stops, the new app features interactive pages including reading, narration, 3D CGI animation, playing, puzzles, painting and video. Previously Callaway and HIT partnered to release apps including Thomas & Friends: Hero of the Rails (May 2011) and Thomas & Friends: Misty Island Rescue (December 2010).
Skyreader Media, Skywriter Media and Entertainment’s new mobile app publisher, enters into a publishing deal with author/illustrator Leslie McGuirk to serve as its first exclusive author-in-residence. McGuirk will create new eBook app titles as well as work with Skyreader Media to develop her classic kid’s series including Pip the Penguin, Tucker and Snail Boy into eBooks for iOS and other tablet devices.
The new Fanboy and Chum Chum DVD, Fanboy and Chum Chum: Brain Freeze, is set for release on August 16, 2011. Created by Nickelodeon Home Entertainment and distributed by Paramount Home Entertainment, the new DVD features seven episodes of Nickelodeon’s CG animated series Fanboy and Chum Chum, as well as the original animatic for the Brain Freeze episode.
Lionsgate and HIT Entertainment will release the new CG animated title Angelina Ballerina: The Shining Star Trophy The Movie on DVD, as a digital download and On Demand this August 30, 2011.
Wildbrain Entertainment names AMSCAN, a designer/manufacturer/distributor of part goods and party accessories, to license Yo Gabba Gabba! for a new line of party goods and accessories set for release in the US in early 2012. Created by Christian Jacobs and Scott Schultz, Yo Gabba Gabba! is produced by The Magic Store and Wildbrain Entertainment and airs in the US as part of Nickelodeon’s Nick Jr.
Darrall Macqueen appoints BBC Worldwide as the licensing agent for its new preschool series Baby Jake (26×11) that debuts this summer on CBeebies. Darrall Macqueen and BBC Worldwide have awarded the UK master toy license to Vivid, which will develop the initial line of toys, puzzles and games that will be available at retail beginning January 2012. Created and produced by production company Darrall Macqueen, Baby Jake is a mixed live-action and 2D photographic animated series that is narrated by Baby Jake’s six-year-old brother Isaac, who can understand his every giggle and gurgle and takes Jake into an imaginary world where he can sing, dance and talk with their animal pals.
Mattel and Classic Media will celebrate the 30th Anniversary of Masters of the Universe with the launch of a consumer products program for the franchise that will include products from licensees including: Changes (30th Anniversary apparel and accessories: t-shirts; sweatshirts; thermals; track jackets; and fashion tops for men, women and juniors; wristbands; belts/belt buckles; key chains, costume jewelry); Disguise (Halloween costumes and accessories); and Mill Creek Entertainment (30th Anniversary edition DVD box set for fall 2012). Publishing partners will be completed shortly. Additionally, the Masters of the Universe Classics toy line based on vintage Mattel toys will continue to be available throughout 2012 exclusively on Mattycollector.com. The 2012 annual subscription will go on sale the week of San Diego Comic-Con starting July 22, 2011. The 30th Anniversary program will also include interaction with the collector community through “FAN-atic” activities at Comic-Con International: San Diego and New York Comic Con.
Konami Digital Entertainment will introduce a new universal Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game (TCG) logo next month as part of the game’s upcoming 10th anniversary. The new logo will roll out simultaneous to the release of its upcoming 2011 Starter Deck: Dawn of the Xyz and on TCG branded elements July 12. However, moving forward, the same logo will appear on most Yu-Gi-Oh! TCG products, regardless of which TV series they are associated.
Discovery Communications enters into new licensing deals with home textiles company Franco and health and beauty products licensee Cosrich Group. The new lines will be part of Discovery Kids branded products. Under the long-term deals, Franco will produce a line of bedroom and bath accessories including rugs, draperies, blankets, bath and beach towels, throw blankets and vinyl placemats, while Cosrich will create a range of kid’s bath activity sets, including soap, body wash, bubble bath, shampoo, bath crayons, sponges, stone paper sheets, fizzing bath rocks, and foam pieces, among other products. Products from both will be available at retail in the US and Canada beginning holiday 2011. Big Tent Entertainment, the North American licensing agent for the Discovery Kids brand, brokered the deals on behalf of Discovery Communications.
Lisa Marks Associates ( www.lma-inc.com ) is appointed the North American Licensing Agent for artist Sean D’Anconia‘s ( www.danconiacreative.com) Stark Raving Mod and Mayumi brands. LMA is developing licensing programs for the two brands, including fashion apparel and accessories, home furnishings and room decor, video games and software, publishing and multimedia.
In the UK, the Royal Mail will issue a set of ten Thomas & Friends postage stamps tomorrow, a day ahead of the 100th anniversary of the birth of creator Rev. Wilbert Awdry (6/15/1911). Featuring Thomas and other characters, the new stamp collection includes six long-format stamps and a miniature sheet of four stamps. The long stamps feature images of popular engines from the Thomas & Friends TV series, while the mini sheet showcases original illustrations from The Railway Series books, first published 65+ years ago.
NASA’s Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex launched Sci-Fi Summer ( www.kennedyspacecenter.com/sci-fi-summer ), which features Star Trek: The Exhibition, Star Trek Live, Star Trek Shuttlecraft Simulator Adventure, among other things, over the weekend in Florida. Also featured at Sci-Fi Summer, which runs now through September 5, 2011, is B9, also known as the Robot from the TV series Lost in Space and Max Q, a talking robot that showcases the achievements of robots in the exploration of the universe. MarVista Entertainment names Stephanie Slack as SVP/Co-Productions & Acquisitions. Slack will work to expand MarVista’s telefilm and series business through strategic relationships and new and existing co-production partners, as well as heading program acquisitions across all genres. Slack will report to Michael D. Jacobs, President, MarVista Entertainment. Most recently, Slack was VP/Television Distribution, 20th Century Fox.
Entertainment One (eOne) promotes Hannah Mungo to Head of UK Licensing, Family. Mungo, who had been Licensing and Retail Manager, in her new position Mungo will now be responsible for developing individual UK licensing strategies for eOne’s portfolio of family entertainment brands including Peppa Pig, Ben and Holly’s Little Kingdom and Humf. Initially, Mungo will focus her efforts on Peppa Pig as a long-term property. She will also continue to manage eOne Family’s UK licensee base, support the properties at retail, create alliances with strategic brand partners, manage budgets and coordinate key aspects of the business across home entertainment, broadcast and production.
