Cynopsis: Kids!
01/24/11

Good morning. It’s Monday, January 24, 2011, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Telegael, an Irish animation and TV studios, acquires the TV and movie rights to the According to Humphrey kid book series by author Betty G. Birney.  The book series, which includes six titles so far, focuses on an adventurous classroom hamster named Humphrey.  The seventh book in the series, titled Back To School According to Humphrey in the US (titled School According to Humphrey in the UK), is set for release this year.  The According to Humphrey books are published in the US by G.P. Putnam’s Sons, an imprint of Penguin Young Readers Group, and in the UK by Faber & Faber.  Additionally, Faber is set to publish Humphrey’s Tiny Tales, a new series of Humphrey books for younger readers.  Telegael is a co-producer of a range of animated series including Tutenstein, Dive Olly, Dive, Hero 108 and ToddWorld, as well as DaVincibles, and Speed Racer: The Next Generation.  In addition to writing kids’ books, Birney has also written for a number of kid-targeted TV series, such as Welcome To Pooh Corner, Dumbo’s Circus, Madeline, Bobby’s World, Fraggle Rock, Doug and several CBS Schoolbreak and ABC Afterschool Specials.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

Liam Neeson joins the voice cast of Cartoon Network‘s animated series Star Wars: The Clone Wars for two episodes, where he’ll reprise his Star Wars: Episode I  The Phantom Menace movie role as Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn, per EW.  The episodes featuring Neeson will air January 28 and February 11, both during the show’s regular Friday night time slot at 8:30p.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Cartoon Network acquires a package of 10 new original kid’s short-form series (total of 98 episodes) from the Australian Children’s Television Foundation (ACTF) to air on the channel in Australia, New Zealand, and Asia.  The programming package features a mix of animated and live action humorous shorts (each episodes running 45-60 seconds), including Dukes of Broxstonia, Monster Chef, Black Knight White Witch, Desdemona, Horace in Slow Motion, Itty Bitty Ditties, My Strange Pet, Casa de Evil, and Laser Beak Man.  The short form series, some with dialog and some non-verbal, are set to debut on Cartoon Network throughout 2011.  The shorts are a collaborative effort between ACTF and Australian producers from Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania.

Chuggington pulls into the Netherlands under a new multi-rights deal between creator/producer Ludorum and RTL Group (Netherlands).  Chuggington debuted over the weekend on RTL’s new kid-targeted programming block, Telekids.  Additionally, RTL will also represent Chuggington for licensing and merchandising across the region.  Learning Curve, the worldwide master toy licensee for Chuggington, will release products based on the property from spring 2011 in the Netherlands, with Parragon representing the Chuggington publishing range.  This spring will also see the debut of Chuggington home entertainment titles in the market.

CBeebies (UK) re-ups its partnership with Classic Media for the preschool series Postman Pat until 2015.  This year marks the 30th anniversary of Postman Pat, which debuted on the BBC in 1981.  Under the agreement, the BBC renews its deal for seasons 3-6 of Postman Pat, as well as four Postman Pat TV specials, Magical Christmas, Clowns Around, Pirate Treasure and Greendale Rocket.  The pact will see Postman Pat featured across BBC1, BBC2, CBBC, CBeebies, BBC iPlayer, and CBeebies radio through October 2015.  Postman Pat can currently be seen daily on CBeebies at 8:10a and on BBC2 at 10:05a.

Fox O&Os have cleared Elizabeth Stanton’s Great Big World, a half-hour educational/informational (E/I) qualifying series, to debut in fall 2011 in 20 markets, including NY, LA and Chicago.  The series has also completed syndication deals for 60% of the country with station groups including Sinclair, Cox, Meredith, Tribute, and CW+.  Produced by Associated Television International, Elizabeth Stanton’s Great Big World follows Stanton (a teen) as she travels learning about the world’s history, geography and cultures, as well as finding ways to help others.

Disney Channel will premiere Lemonade Mouth, its new original TV movie, on Friday, April 15 at 8p.  Based on the young adult book of the same name by Mark Peter Hughes, Lemonade Mouth is a music-driven TV movie that revolves around five average music-loving teens meet and form a successful band.  Lemonade Mouth had been scheduled to premiere in March 2011.  Lemonade Mouth is directed by Patricia Riggen (La Misma Luna) from a script by April Blair, and executive produced by Debra Martin Chase (The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, The Cheetah Girls movies), co-produced by Gaylyn Fraiche (Just Wright, Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2) and choreographed by Chris Scott.  A production of GWAVE Productions, Lemonade Mouth was filmed on location in New Mexico.  The movie’s soundtrack will now be released Tuesday, April 12 on iTunes and in stores. The soundtrack features three songs written and preformed by Adam Hicks (Zeke and Luther), who is one of the stars of the TV movie.

Cyberchase PlaySpace ( www.pbskidsgo.org/cyberchase/playspace ), the free interactive storytelling game for kids and teachers based on the animated PBS Kids Go! math-centric series Cyberchase, gets a re-launch.  The game uses video and text prompts from the series, kids can create their own stories using drawing tools, photos, text and so forth, which they can share via e-mail or print.  PlaySpace’s new features include video prompts, photo upload capability and stickers featuring Cyberchase characters and other items from the TV series.  The new PlaySpace also includes new tools for educators, which allow them to use the game to reinforce skills and assess students’ math comprehension.  Cyberchase is produced by Thirteen for WNET.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Shortcake, and American Greetings Properties (AGP) ink a new US licensing deal with BioWorld Merchandising for the Strawberry Shortcake brand.  Under the agreement BioWorld will create apparel (T-shirts, long/short sleeved tops, fleece, headwear, cold weather knits) and accessory (bags, wallets) lines based on both the classic and new CGI-animated Strawberry Shortcake looks.  The Classic Strawberry Shortcake collections will be available in stores March 2011 and are aimed at female tweens, teens and young adults.  The New Strawberry Shortcake collections will be available in stores in July 2011 and are aimed at girls 2-7.  The Classic Strawberry Shortcake apparel will initially be available in specialty stores, while the New Strawberry Shortcake apparel will be sold in mid-tier and mass-market retailers.  Berry Bitty Adventures, the new CGI-animated Strawberry Shortcake TV series, currently airs in the US on The Hub.

Gilbert, and manufactured by Gilbert from his factory in New Haven until it went bankrupt in 1967, when the company was bought by The Gabriel Company.  This toy is designed to encourage a child’s imagination.  What is it?    (Email [email protected] with your answer and be sure to include your name, company, city and time zone.
