Saturday’s debut of FOX Sports 1 in approximately 90-million homes saw an average of 1.71 million viewers in prime time thanks to UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen, according to Nielsen. The newborn channel averaged a 1.33 household rating for the event, with the network outracing all four major broadcast networks among Adults 18-49, Adults 18-34, Men 18-49, and Men 18-34 based on impressions within each demo. The event also beat the average of the eight UFC on FX Fight Nights by 49% in rating and 38% in viewership.
NBC Sports Group’s debut of the Premier League the on Saturday paid dividends for the sport as the league drew record ratings nationally. The triple-header on NBC and NBC Sports Network averaged a 0.5 rating overall, to mark a 67% spike over the equitable three opening Saturday games saw a year ago in 2012 (a 0.3 average). NBC’s telecast of Swansea City/Manchester United delivered a 0.8, the highest overnight rating in US history for a Premier League opening day matchup. On the local front, Washington, D.C. topped all U.S. markets for the game with a 2.2, followed by Tulsa, Austin, Seattle and Buffalo. Online, fans also streamed more than four million minutes of Premier League action via NBC Sports Live Extra.
Cablevision is pulling its MSG Varsity network off of its home on channel 14. The channel will now convert to an online network with live and VOD services. The digital transition of MSG Varsity will look to connect viewers to live local high school sports content via TV, Web or mobile with customizable content. The new digital hub will launch on Aug. 29.
ESPN formalized its most of its September programming plans for Sunday Night Baseball presented by Taco Bell. The company selected the Mets/Nationals for Sept. 1 on ESPN2, Dodgers/Reds on Sept. 8 and Yankees/Red Sox on Sept. 15. Sept. 22 will mark the channel’s last game of the season for the franchise Dan Shulman handles play-by-play with analysts Orel Hershiser and John Kruk and reporter Buster Olney.
HBO’s Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel takes a look at the marketing behind Red Bull tomorrow night at 9p, examining how “the company has largely avoided traditional advertising, focusing its marketing initiatives almost exclusively on sponsoring extreme athletes” and how those tactics brought the brand from “fringe appeal to mainstream notoriety.”
ESPN Audio is gearing up to launch the third annual ESPN Audio Fall Football Tour sponsored by Hanes, La Quinta and StubHub. Series such as Mike & Mike, The Herd with Colin Cowherd and SVP & Russillo will broadcast live from around the country ahead of the football season, starting Friday, Sept. 6, with a live broadcast at MetLife Stadium starting at 6a. The nine tour stops include five NFL game stops and four college football games equating to four stops for Mike & Mike, three for The Herd and two for SVP & Russillo.
Today ESPN Radio will launch KLAS ESPN Sports 89 FM in Jamaica where it will be operated by KLAS Sports Radio Ltd. Programming will feature ESPN Radio’s content from 6a to 11:30p on weekdays, including daily live and delayed broadcasts of Mike & Mike and the Herd. In addition, the station will carry ESPN Radio NFL games.
Longtime Red Sox broadcaster Jerry Remy will continue to be off the air this week following the arrest of his son who is accused of fatally stabbing his girlfriend. Remy said that he and his wife were “heartbroken” over the tragedy. Dennis Eckersley fills in while Remy is away.

NASCAR revealed that its annual NASCAR After The Lap sponsored by Ford and Coca-Cola will return to Las Vegas for the fifth consecutive year. The event takes place during the NASCAR Sprint cup Series Champion’s Week at the Palms Casino Hotel on Thursday, December 5 at 5p and feature all 12 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup drivers. NASCAR fans can enter the NASCAR After The Lap sweepstakes offering two winners an all-inclusive VIP trip for them and a guest to NASCAR After The Lap in Las Vegas and either one trip to the 2014 Coca-Cola 600 or one trip to the 2014 Ford Ecoboost 400. One winner will also be taking home a 2014 Ford F-150 Tremor.
USA Luge is turning to the public to help recruit, develop, train and support its athletes, launching a crowdsourcing campaign to raise cash. Donors will receive benefits ranging from a t-shirt to a trip to Sochi to watch the team compete next February, depending upon the size of their contribution as well as personalized thank you messages from athletes, luge World Cup trips and other USA Luge apparel. The campaign marks the first time an entire team and gone that route to drive donations. MSP Sports and The Graubard Group will help organize and promote the campaign, respectively.

Neulion is partnering with the America East to launch AmericaEast.TV, a digital network offering an array of sports beginning with the fall season. The platform will offer streaming from eight of the nine institutions as well as on-demand video content such as interviews and highlights and will be available free of charge.
The Premier League extended its tied with digital sports media group PERFORM to continue their mobile and internet clip production partnership. The renewal will see PERFORM producing and distributing match highlights and features for the league as well as editing and encoding video clips of every match with distribution to licensees around the world, including NBC.
