Good morning. It’s Monday, August 16, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.
Disney/Pixar‘s Toy Story 3 becomes the highest grossing animated movie ever earning a total of $920 million at the box office, taking over the top spot from DreamWorks Shrek 2 (May 2004), which, per Box Office Mojo, had held the lead with $919.8 million. Directed by Lee Unkrich, Toy Story 3, a 3D movie, also stepped over the $400 million line domestically this weekend, Disney’s second movie to do so; the first was Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest/July 2006. The movie is also the studios 4th biggest worldwide grossing movie ever following behind Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl (July 2003), Dead Man’s Chest, and Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland (March 2010). Toy Story 3 opened domestically on June 18, earning Disney/Pixar’s its highest grossing weekend with $109 million and the biggest June movie opening ever. Worth noting, as many online have, is that these numbers and records don’t take into account inflation for ticket prices or the price for individual 3D tickets, which would put Toy Story 3 further down on the various lists. All of that said though, Toy Story 3 is a strong and extremely well received movie by critics and audiences alike. Disney Studios Home Entertainment will release Toy Story 3 on Blu-ray and DVD on November 2, 2010.
