Cynopsis: Kids!
04/26/10

Good morning. It’s Monday, April 26, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

BBC Worldwide Channels‘ preschool CBeebies channel rolls out special programming plans in honor of Children’s Day, a holiday that is described as similar to Mother’s and Father’s Day for Hispanics.  Beginning April 30 through May 6, CBeebies will feature a different program each day, focusing on a specific developmental skill set, including promoting exercise, reading, drawing, numbers, and imagination.  Each program will air for one hour and will run three times on its day, at 9a, 2p, and 6p.  The week will showcase preschool shows including: Boogie Beebies; Roly Mo; Dibujemos con Squiglet (Get Squiggling!); Los Super Numeros (Numberjacks); El Closet de Chloe (Chloe’s Closet); Kerwhizz; and Teletubbies.

NEW PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT

In LA, Disney‘s new movie studio Chairman, Rich Ross, laid out his plans include releasing Pixar’s movies Monsters, Inc. sequel on November 16, 2012, and Brave (f/k/a The Bear and the Bow) on June 15, 2012, featuring the voices of Reese Witherspoon, Billy Connolly, and Emma Thompson, per Variety.  In addition to screening trailers and/or footage for new Disney titles such as Jerry Bruckheimer’s Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Secretariat, as well as Toy Story 3, Tangled and Tron: Legacy, Ross also showcased the first three movies he has greenlit, Pirates of the Caribbean 4, and The Muppets for 2011 and the teen-centric Prom for release 2012.  Also releasing in 2012 are Tim Burton’s stop-motion feature Frankenweenie and Andrew Stanton’s live0action movie John Carter of Mars.  The animated musical Gnomeo & Juliet, produced by Elton John and Miramax, will bow in early 2011 under Disney’s Touchstone banner.  Pixar’s Cars 2 will also release in 2011.  This month Disney also named M.T. Carney as the studio’s new head of Marketing.  Carney was co-founder of Naked Communications NY, and before that she was worldwide planning director for Ogilvy & Mather.

Paramount and Nickelodeon Movies will give M. Night Shyamalan’s The Last Airbender the 3D one over, but don’t worry the 3D conversion will NOT mean shifting the release date that remains July 2, 2010, per THR.

MORE KIDS STUFF

Co-production partners Sesame Workshop and Televisa (Mexico) have begun production on a 13th season of Plaza Sesamo, which will include 65×30 new episodes of the preschool literacy-centric and story telling series, at Televisa’s San Angel studio.  The new season will see the debut of the new Muppet character Gaby, a 4-year old girl, who, despite being timid and a dreamer, can overcome her shyness to sing.  The new episodes will also include new set features such as more buildings and windows, brighter colors, all designed to reflect Latin American neighborhoods that can be found in Mexico, Colombia, Chile  or anywhere, and a new tree on the Plaza.  Additionally, the new season sees the appointment of Lorenzo Dunoyer as new Sr. Producer.  Javier Williams continues to serve as Executive Producer.  Season 13 of Plaza Sesamo will premiere on Televisa this fall and on Discovery Kids throughout Latin America in January 2011.

Singer/actor Joey Fatone (N’Sync) will guest star as a professional baseball player in a new episode of Playhouse Disney‘s series Imagination Movers on Saturday, may 22 at 10a on Disney Channel.

MARKETING/LICENSING

Penguin Group and the Pearson Foundation launch We Give Books ( www.wegivebooks.org ), a new digital initiative that aims to get books to kids that don’t have them.  The new free website offers parents/caregivers/educators with access to an ever growing digital collection of Penguin Group’s classic kid’s titles, and for each book read online, the Pearson Foundation will donate a book to a kid in partnership with one of the international, national, and local literacy organizations presented at WeGiveBooks.org.  With the goal of donating one million books in the first year of the initiative, it is the visitors to the site that will determine the volume of books shared with each organization.  Each time parents/kids read a new digital book they are invited to select the organization on whose behalf they wish their reading to support.  The initial set of literacy organization chosen by the Penguin Group and Pearson Foundation include: The Asia Foundation’s Books for Asia program; The LA County Office of Education’s Million Word Challenge; The NEA Foundation’s Books Across America; Room to Read; The United Through Reading Military Program; Volunteer USA’s Family Literacy Academies; and World Vision’s Early Childhood Development Learning Spaces.

Sesame Workshop teams with the Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) to assist in reducing the number of road accidents and fatalities among kids and families around the world, particularly in low- and middle-income countries.  Using its media expertise, Sesame Workshop will work with GRSP to create content and distribute materials that will educate kids/families about road safety behavior.  So serious is the issue around the world, the UN General Assembly recently passed a resolution making 2011-2020 the Decade of Action for Road Safety.
