~ CYNOPSIS Q&A ~

It’s been a big year for the Sundance Channel. Top of the Lake‘s finale is tonight and Rectify, the channel’s first wholly-owned scripted series, launches today on VOD and premieres on the channel next Monday, April 22 at 10p. These two shows mark Sundance’s expansion into scripted originals – the AMC-owned network recently greenlighted its second wholly-owned foray, The Descendants. On September 30th, Sundance will become a fully ad-supported network.  It’s also been a big year for Sarah Barnett, who was promoted from Executive Vice President and General Manager to President and General Manager in February 2013. We talked with her about all the new developments under the Sundance umbrella.

Was the change to upping the number of originals that Sundance is now producing coordinated with becoming ad-supported?
It all came together in a way that made sense. Our first scripted co-production was in 2010 with Carlos, and it won a Golden Globe for Outstanding Miniseries. There was such an amazing response that it became clear that originals were the right path. And then we decided to invest in scripted content.

What do you think viewer reaction to the ad-supported environment will be?
I think people understand that ads will allow us to make great content that our audience wants to see. We have such a great example in AMC; no one would argue that the format is destructive to those shows (like Mad Men). Top of the Lake, for instance, works very well within the format.

Rectify will encore on AMC on April 28th, leading out of Mad Men. Do you expect to share programming across the AMC networks, like on IFC, for instance?
It is the best practice of basic cable. I think it’s a smart way for broadcast groups to flow audiences from a bigger network to a smaller one [AMC is in 97 million households, while Sundance is in 50 million]. We’re aware that we’re new to the game here and that we’re not fully distributed. So we know we have to do everything we can to reach our audience in as many refreshing ways as possible. For instance, we’re working with Art House Convergence and Sundance Cinemas to offer the public a sneak peek tomorrow at the first two episodes of Rectify, followed by a Skype Q & A with members of the cast.

What shows do you see on other cable nets that you like?
I’m impressed by a lot of the work on FX, like The Americans and Sons of Anarchy; it’s just getting stronger and stronger. They’re good at finding new voices, like Louis C.K., Wilfred, and Archer, too.

A year from now, what will success look like for Sundance?
We don’t expect to be a top five network in a year’s time, but I’d like to see a couple of ongoing scripted series, more co-productions like Top of the Lake. And more unscripted series like Push Girls, that are distinctive and entertaining.
