Cynopsis: Kids!



Good morning. It’s Friday, September 10, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

Dolphin Digital Media (, which creates kid-targeted social networking sites, launches Dolphin Digital Studios, a new division that will create original programming for online.  Initially, Dolphin Digital Studios will focus on creating content aimed at tweens and teens, with its first project set to go into production later this year for release in early 2011.  The goal is for Dolphin Digital Studios to produce between 8-10 web series each year, some of which will be self-financed with others, including some currently in development, funded via project-specific partners.  Dolphin expects that each web series created by its new studio will generate $1 million in revenue, with net margins of 20%-30% per project.


Nickelodeon welcomes two new Nicktoons series, T.U.F.F. Puppy and Planet Sheen, to its Saturday morning block when they premiere back-to-back on October 2, at 11a and 11:30a respectively.  Nickelodeon will offer sneak peeks and promotional content for both series, which will stream on ( ) and via the network’s wireless partners.  The premiere episode will be simulcast on Nick Mobile.  Additionally, following each premiere, clips will be available through the wireless partners and full episodes can be downloaded on iTunes, Xbox and Amazon.  Planet Sheen will also be available via Playstation.  Additionally, beginning October 4 and 11 respectively, T.U.F.F. Puppy and Planet Sheen will launch in a dedicated category on Nick’s VOD.

  • T.U.F.F. Puppy (11a) – from creator Butch Hartman (Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom), the 2D animated series follows Dudley Puppy (voiced by Jerry Trainor of iCarly), a spirited but dim-witted dog, who is thrust into the rule of secret agent when he is recruited by the crime fighting organization, T.U.F.F. (Turbo Undercover Fighting Force).  Dudley and his partner feline super-spy Kitty Katswell, they spar like cats and dogs, work together to protect the world from the evil D.O.O.M. (Diabolical Order of Mayhem).
  • Planet Sheen (11:30a) – From Steve Oedekerk (Jimmy Neutron, Back at the Barnyard) and Keith Alcorn (Jimmy Neutron), Planet Sheen is a CG-animated series that revolves around Sheen Guevera Estevez (Jeff Garcia, Jimmy Neutron, Back at the Barnyard), the hyper kid from the network’s series Jimmy Neutron.  Stranded in space, after “borrowing” a rocket, on the planet Zeenu, Sheen must learn to deal with the planet’s limited technology, bizarre customs and not-too-bright creatures, as well as dealing with villains.

CBBC picks up the UK broadcast rights for the animated series Pet Squad (52×11) from indie UK-based kid-centric production company Darrall Macqueen.  The series is a co-production between Darrall Macqueen, Malaysia’s Inspidea and Canada’s March Entertainment.  Created by writer/comedian Caimh McDonnell, Pet Squad revolves around the adventures of Dodge, Sheeba and Bingo (a dog, cat and guinea pig), who are transformed into some-time superheroes that must product their town from the evil Mother Goose and her gang of evildoers.  Sony Pictures Television holds the distribution rights to Pet Squad worldwide, excluding in the UK, Malaysia and Canada.

The Jim Henson Company heads back into production on the second season of its CG-animated preschool series Dinosaur Train ( ).  The new season, which is comprised of 26×30 or 52×11, is slated to debut in fall 2011 on PBS Kids.  The series is co-produced by Singapore’s Sparky Animation, with assistance by the Singapore Media Development Authority.  UK production and financial support is provided by Ingenious Media.  The new episodes are designed to encourage preschoolers and parents to explore and interact with nature and explore their local surroundings.  Craig Bartlett, Lisa Henson and Halle Stanford are executive producing the new season.  The Jim Henson Company will continue overseeing all ancillary efforts for the property, including licensing and merchandising, and will showcase the new season at Mipcom 2010 next month.  PBS handles DVD distribution to consumer and education markets.

This week marks Funimation Channel‘s, a 24/7 anime network, launch of a HD feed with new branding across both the HD and SD platforms. Additionally, the channel, which is aimed at people 18-34, is adding programming to its line-up including Samurai 7, Baccano, Darker than Black, Slayers Evolution R, D Gray Man, Soul Eater, Claymore, Slayers Revolution and Devil May Cry.  Funimation Channel is a partnership between Olympusat and Funimation Entertainment, the latter is owned by Navarre Corporation.

Discovery Studios, a Discovery Communications production studio, appoints Jocelyn Shearer as VP/Footage Sales.  Based at Discovery’s headquarters in Silver Spring, MD, Shearer will report to Peter McKelvy, VP/Footage and Music Services.  Most recently, Shearer was with National Geographic where she served as VP/Video Productions and archive Management.

Galleon Holdings, a UK based kid-targeted media company, appoints Yu Peng as Executive Director in China.  Yu became part of the company two years ago when Galleon acquired Changsha High and New Technology Industrial Development Zone Yunbo Information Technology Co., a mobile service provider in China of which he was President and a principal.  He is currently responsible for all Galleon’s media operations in China including mobile and online operations.

Lisa Streff is named to the newly created position of SVP/Global Partnerships & Licensing, John Wayne Enterprises.  She will report to the company’s president, Ethan Wayne.  Streff will oversee development and execution of worldwide licensing and merchandising and corporate and promotional partnership efforts to bolster the awareness of the brand.  Her initial focus will be to further two core licensing efforts, classic collectibles and the John Wayne lifestyle program, which is targeted to young adult males and is based on Wayne’s western casual style.  Streff will also head development on a new kid-targeted branded licensing and entertainment program.  Most recently, Streff was SVP/US Consumer Products, Cookie Jar Entertainment.
