Time Warner Cable took a bigger hit than expected from its month-long CBS blackout this summer. The stand-off cost the company 306,000 of its 11.7 million television subscribers, almost double what Wall Street expected, it was revealed in an earnings call. “Not surprisingly, we saw some customers disconnect,” said TWC COO Rob Marcus, who said the bitter battle got better deals for the cable company.

~ IN THE NEWS ~

REELZ‘s two-hour documentary about the assassination of President Kennedy, JFK: The Smoking Gun, promises to be explosive. Says REELZ CEO Stan Hubbard, “We believe that the bullet that killed the President was an accidental firing from a Secret Service gun. The information presented in Smoking Gun should change history.” Adds Colin McLaren, author of the book on which the doc is based, “Viewers will see that this is the story of a tragic accident that collides with a foolhardy attempt by an assassin – an accident supported by witnesses, ballistics and forensic science that has been ignored for 50 years.” Show premieres Sunday, November 3 at 8p.

A deal brokered during TV’s upfronts between Turner Broadcasting and Starcom is taking effect now, reports Deadline, which could mean product placement of brands like Burger King and Pop Tarts on TNT, TBS, Adult Swim and TruTV programs. Turner says they’ll “incorporate the brands within shows where the brand integration make sense”; as part of the agreement, the partners will conduct a study to determine the effectiveness of the integrations.

Lady Gaga will host and perform as the musical guest on the November 16 broadcast of NBC‘s Saturday Night Live. Gaga has guested twice before, but this will be her hosting debut.

Fox has launched Fan Friday, allowing viewers the chance to be featured on-air. Timed to the net’s new lineup featuring day-shifted Bones at 8p and Raising Hope, returning for season four at 9p, on Friday, November 15, viewers are invited to submit photos, videos or texts via Facebook, Twitter, Vine and Instagram, answering a question of the week, using #fanfriday.

CBS is in discussions with 20th Century Fox TV for a spin-off of its hit sitcom, How I Met Your Mother, now in its ninth and final season, Deadline was first to report. The project would feature new characters, centering on a woman’s search for her future husband.

YouTube isn’t giving discount deals for TV network content anymore, reports AdAge – nets will get the same ad split as online video producers (with the video-sharing web site collecting 45 percent). A bright spot for the nets: in YouTube’s new model, the company will set a threshold, so content partners can get a bigger share if they collect a higher price for ads.

~ MARKETING & MEASUREMENT ~

TiVo Research and Analytics and digital measurement firm comScore announced a deal with Procter & Gamble for single source research to track the effectiveness of P&G’s cross media campaign. The agreement covers the company’s U.S. media spend for TV and digital, matching media exposure with purchase behavior – designed to give the consumer good giant a better handle on how well, and where, its marketing efforts are working.

Nielsen and CBS announced a trial measuring cross-media campaigns on local radio and television. “In today’s multi-platform advertising environment, it is not enough to set full campaign reach and frequency targets,” said David Poltrack, Chief Research Officer, CBS Corp. “The advertiser must distribute the exposure to their message over time – and in a manner that assures that each potential purchaser is exposed to that message in a consistent manner.”

~ COMING UP ~

Fatal Attraction returns to TV One for a sophomore season, with new stories of romance gone horribly wrong. But the docu-series takes pains not to exploit. “There has always been programming that offers romanticized versions of toxic relationships,” D’Angela Proctor, SVP of Programming and Production tells Cynopsis. “It is important to offer insight into these abusive relationships and Fatal Attraction delves into these tragic romances while highlighting the red flags that can often go ignored.” Series returns Monday, December 2 at 9p.

The Improv: 50 Years Behind the Brick Wall, a doc celebrating the famous comedy club, will air Friday, December 6 at 10p, announced Epix. The Spotted Dog Entertainment production is narrated by Adam Sandler and features a roster of A-list comedians including Judd Apatow, Jerry Seinfeld and Ray Romano.

Sundance Channel is re-broadcasting the episode of interview series Spectacle: Elvis Costello With… featuring legendary rocker Lou Reed, who passed away October 27 at age 71. Show airs Saturday, November 2 at 7p.

Lady Gaga, Luke Bryan and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have been added to the performers slate for the American Music Awards. The Dick Clark Productions event airs on ABC Sunday, November 24 at 8p.

Showtime docu-series Years of Living Dangerously will feature celebs traveling the globe to report on climate change issues. Harrison Ford, Don Cheadle, America Ferrara and Lesley Stahl are among the stars scheduled for the program, executive produced by James Cameron, Jerry Weintraub and Arnold Schwarzenegger for an April, 2014 premiere.

The CW will broadcast the One Direction iHeartRadio Album Release Party on Monday, December 9 at 9p. The tween sensation’s new album drops November 25. Ryan Seacrest (who else?) will host.

After a successful summer test run, daytime talker The Real has been sold to all Fox owned-and-operated stations for a fall 2014 launch. The one-hour daily chatfest from Telepictures, featuring hosts Tamar Braxton, Loni Love, Adrienne Bailon, Jeannie Mai and Tamera Mowry-Housley, offers “a real, multi-cultural conversation about issues that women of all ages are talking about,” said Ken Werner, President of Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution.

Please join Cynopsis on Thursday, November 21, for an exclusive training webinar, Leveraging Social Media to Drive Tune-in and Ratings. Featured speakers include Deirdre Bannon, VP Product for SocialGuide; Sumeet Kanwar, Managing Director Midwest & Strategy for OMD; Jake Katz, VP Audience Insights & Strategy for REVOLT, and Dana Ortiz, VP Brand Marketing for Syfy. In this special webinar, you’ll hear about strategies for using social media to spread the word about programming and generate the kind of excitement that boosts viewership.

~ CASTING~

Matt Passmore (The Glades) will star in a USA Network pilot from Sean Jablonski (Suits). Passmore plays an investment banker out to redefine his life in the Universal Cable Productions project.

Nico Tortorella (The Following) has been added to the cast of upcoming MTV thriller pilot Eye Candy, starring Victoria Justice.

Lifetime backdoor pilot Deliverance Creek has cast Yaani King (Mad Men) as a slave who forges her freedom papers.

~ PRODUCTION & DEVELOPMENT~

NBC can’t get enough of Tina Fey. The SNL and 30 Rock alum, who signed a deal to co-host the Golden Globes for the net, has gotten a straight-to-series order from NBC for a comedy she’s producing with 30 Rock’s Robert Carlock starring Ellie Kemper (The Office). The show, about a woman who escapes a cult, is scheduled for a fall 2014 debut.

Starz has put into development Wonderworld, an FBI drama set in the 1980s, with Owen Wilson exec producing alongside Rene Balcer (Law & Order) and Fred Berner.

Kim Cattrall is shedding her brash, uninhibited Sex and the City persona for the lead role in Sensitive Skin, in production for Canada’s The Movie Network and Movie Central. Cattrall is also an executive producer on the Rhombus Media project about a woman of a certain age haunted by doubts about choices she’s made.

The CW is developing a series with Conde Nast Entertainment based on The Avenger. The project, from CBS Television Studios, is about a young woman with face-altering superpowers investigating the death of her parents.

ABC has project in the works about Yale secret society Skull and Bones, reports Deadline. Drama by Dean Widenmann follows a female FBI agent who discovers a big case is linked to her college past.

Amazon Studios has greenlit its first two drama pilots. Bosch is based on Michael Connelly‘s novels about a homicide detective; The After, from Chris Carter (The X-Files) tells the story of strangers tossed together in violent circumstances. Early next year, pilots will be streamed on Prime Instant Video and Amazon’s Lovefilm to gauge viewer reaction.
