Good morning. It’s Friday, May 10, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing.
With less than 100 days until the launch of FOX Sports 1, the network revealed schedules and talent for the platform, which debuts Aug. 17 at 8a. That Saturday will include 18 hours of original programming, with 16.5 hours live and include NASCAR Live, followed by seven hours of NASCAR programming, including the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. UFC action then begins at 5p with UFC Tonight, followed by UFC on FS1 Prelims at 6p and UFC on FS1 Saturday at 8p. The day then wraps up with the premiere telecast of FOX Sports Live.
Other debuts on the channel will start on Monday, Aug. 19 and include Regis Philbin series Crowd Goes Wild at 5p, FOX Football Daily at 6p and FS1’s Monday Night Fights franchise at 9p. Coverage of the 2013-14 UEFA Champions League season starts Tuesday, Aug. 20, while the 2013-14 college football season premieres on Thursday, Aug. 29.
The network also announced the additions of Don Bell, Molly McGrath and Julie Stewart-Binks to the FOX Sports 1 broadcaster roster. Bell’s anchors FOX Sports Live, after three years as an anchor for ESPNEWS. McGrath and Stewart-Binks serve as update desk and breaking news correspondents.
Sen. John McCain’s newest legislation, dubbed the Television Consumer Freedom Act of 2013, looks to have a multi-tiered impact on sports broadcasters. The legislation would allow MSOs to sell channel a la carte to consumers instead of bundled with other networks. In addition, the bill calls for the elimination of the famed sports blackout rule that blocks local TV from showing an NFL game in the marker if the event is not sold out. The rule would apply for any team whose stadium was funded with taxpayer dollars. The National Cable & Telecommunications Assn. called the bill a “lose-lose proposition,” according to The LA Times.
ESPN added 15 Mountain West Conference college football games to its 2013 slate, with kick times and networks to be determined during the season on a 12- or six-day basis. The news is in addition to the previously announced seven Mountain West games for Thursday and Friday night telecasts. Overall, ESPN networks will carry 22 Mountain West home games this season. Overall, the schedule will include six Boise State games, four Fresno State games and three San Diego State games.
With IOC President Jacques Rogge set to step down in September after 12 years atop the organization, IOC VP Thomas Back became the first contender to throw his hat into the ring to succeed Rogge, according to the AP. Bach is considered the front-runner for the top job although he is expected to face multiple rivals.
FOX Deportes wrapped up April ranking as the top Spanish sports cable network in total viewers and adults 18-49 across key day-parts, according to Nielsen. In all, the top five sports programs in Spanish cable in total viewers and adults 18-49 last month were all televised by FOX Deportes. In April, FOX Deportes averaged 67,000 total viewers and 40,000 adult 18-49 viewers during prime time.
NBC Sports Network is teaming with Universal Sports and USA Wrestling to present The Rumble on the Rails, the live wrestling featuring the national teams from the USA, Iran and Russia that will take place in Grand Central Terminal in New York City on Wednesday, May 15. Coverage will being at 3:30p with the USA vs. Iran freestyle wrestling dual meet. Jason Knapp calls the action with color commentary from Olympic champion Rulon Gardner and reporter Jimmy Roberts. Coverage then continues with USA vs. Russia from 6-7:30p on Universal Sports.
Former Phillies, Yankees and Mets manager and Cubs general manager Dallas Green will be the focus of the new episode of Studio 42 with Bob Costas this Saturday at 1:30p. In the the half-hour interview, Green looks back on his nearly 60-year baseball career and shares stories from his new book The Mouth That Roared: My Six Outspoken Decades in Baseball.
NBC Sports Group offers 14.5 hours of live coverage of the 2013 Amgen Tour of California, the premier U.S.-based cycling event starting Sunday at 5p. on NBC Sports Network and running through the final stage on NBC on Sunday, May 19 at 1p. Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen offer commentary and insight with reporters Bob Roll and Steve Porino.
ONE World Sports and Frank N. Magid Associates released a new research study that reveals a broad interest in global sports television programming across the U.S. Based on a nationally projectable survey of 2,800 U.S. consumers, aged 18 to 70, the study found that almost five out of 10 consumers showed an interest in both global TV sports with over-indexing among the “millennial” 18-34 adult age group in 60% showing interest in international sports.
ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNEWS will combine to televise all matches of the FIFA Confederations Cup from June 15-30, from six cities in Brazil. Live match coverage begins Saturday, June 15, on ESPN and WatchESPN with the tournament’s opening match featuring Brazil/Japan at 2:30p. ESPN and ESPN Mobile TV will carry 13 matches, including three group stage contests featuring the Mexican Men’s National Team.
CBS Radio WFAN 660AM/101.9FM locked in a new multi-year agreement with the New York Giants that extends the station’s flagship radio station rights to broadcast preseason, regular season and any postseason games. In addition, WFAN will also continue to be home of the Giants in-depth pre and post-game coverage for all contests broadcast on the station.

YouTube’s launch of paid subscription channels saw two sports brands jumping into the mix. PGA.com the official website of The PGA of America managed by Turner Sports launches the PGA Digital Golf Academy, a new online subscription product on the new YouTube subscription platform and will offer instructional videos featuring PGA Professionals designed to help golfers improve their game. Subscriptions are $4.99 a month or $34.99 for a full year, with unlimited streaming of videos and classes available anytime, anywhere via broadband and mobile. Highlights include Topic Playlists, Classes, One-on-One Lessons and Golf Instruction Series.
UFC is also participating with the all new UFC Select channel offering access to full event replays, classic fights, and full episodes of UFC series such as UFC Unleashed, The Best of Pride Fighting Championships and the reality show The Ultimate Fighter. Subscriptions will run for a monthly fee of $5.99.
Major League Soccer revealed that MLS Digital, spanning MLSsoccer.com to the MLS MatchDay App , has seen a nice boost in mobile traffic and engagement with the app garnering a 30% increase in mobile downloads this year. Meanwhile, MLS Live, the league’s subscription game streaming service saw a 50% year-to-year increase in subscribers.
beIN SPORT announced the launch of the 24/7 streaming platform called beIN SPORT Play, that launched today at noon. The service will allow authenticated pay-TV subscribers to view broadcast content and will be made available immediately to Time Warner Cable and Bright House Networks subscribers.
