Cynopsis: Kids!

03/05/10

Good morning. It’s Friday, March 5, 2010, and this is your first early morning Kids briefing.

CBBC orders up two new seasons (24×30) of its original kid’s series The Sarah Jane Adventures, a spin-off of Doctor Who.  Created by Russell T Davies and featuring one of Doctor Who’s most famous companions, Sarah Jane Smith, The Sarah Jane Adventures is produced by BBC Cymru Wales.  The fourth season of the series, again starring Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane, is set to premiere this fall 2010.  The series heads back into production in Cardiff later this month, with producer Nikki Wilson stepping up alongside Davies as executive producer and new producer Brian Minchin joining the team.  The fifth series will go into production in 2011 for air later that year.

Disney-ABC International Television (DAIT) Asia Pacific inks a multi-year deal with PT Media Nusantara Citra Tbk (MNC), an Indonesian media company, to distribute Disney animation, preschool programs, live action series and original movies on MNC’s two national free-to-air TV networks, RCTI and TPI, across Indonesia.  Under the deal Disney’s programming will run in four branded kid/family-targeted program blocks.  RCTI will start airing Disney Clubhouse, a 90-minute, weekly preschool animation block, beginning Saturday, March 6, 2010, featuring shows such as Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Little Einstein’s and My Friends Tigger & Pooh.  The channel will also air Disney live-action series including Hannah Montana (season 1) as well as its original movies like High School Musical (the first one) over the coming months.  TPI premiered in a 2-hour marathon of Disney Club on February 14, 2010.  The Disney Club block, targeted to K5-14, airs in the afternoons.  RCTI and TPI reach 50+% of all homes in Indonesia.

MORE KIDS STUFF

MarVista Entertainment acquires the worldwide distribution rights to the feature film Mandie and the Secret Tunnel, which is based on Lois Leppard’s kid-targeted novel of the same name, from Lost World Pictures.  Under the deal, MarVista will license the rights to movie worldwide, and also maintains the option to acquire the remaining four movies for which Lost World’s Producer/Director team Owen Smith and Joy Chapman own the rights. The second movie in the series, Mandie and the Cherokee Treasure, is currently in development and will be completed this year. Mandie and the Secret Tunnel will debut to the international market at MIPTV.  By the way … there are 40+ titles in the Mandie book series, which are set in the early 1900s and follow Mandie on her mystery solving adventures with the her friends and cat Snowball.

The new animated series Pink Panther & Pals will premiere on Cartoon Network this Sunday, March 7 at 7:30a.  Co-produced/co-financed by Rubicon Studios and MGM, this is the first new Pink Panther TV series in 17 years.  Each half-hour show is comprised of 2×7 episodes featuring a teenage Pink Panther and his friends, along with one short of the classic Ant & the Aardvark characters.  Pink Panther & Pals is based upon the animated Pink Panther character created by David DePatie and Friz Freleng and the Pink panther films of Blake Edwards.

Turner Broadcasting inks an exclusive three-year deal for the rights to Tiger Aspect‘s animated series Mr Bean (26×30) for its Boomerang channel in the UK.  In the animated series the great Rowan Atkinson reprises his role as Mr Bean.  Created by Atkinson and Richard Curtis, the Mr Bean character of TV/film/cartoons celebrates its 20th anniversary this year.  Mr Bean is produced by Tiger Aspect in association with Richard Purdum Productions and Varga Holdings.

The Jonas Group, which represents the Jonas Brothers, Demi Lovato and Jordin Sparks, enters into a partnership with the American teen musical group Savvy.  Under the deal, The Jonas Group will guide the careers of the six-member Savvy group, whose new TV series, The Wannabes Starring Savvy ( www.thewannabes.tv ), premieres on ABC3 (Australia) this Sunday, March 7 at 7:10p.  The 26 episode series, which follows the ups and downs of six high school kids at an upscale performing arts school  with each episode featuring an original Savvy music video, is expected to subsequently rollout in other countries.  The TV series is produced by Ron Stern and Christine LeMaire of Stern-LeMaire Productions.
