Good morning. It’s Friday, June 28, 2013, and this is your first early morning Sports briefing. 

Famed college basketball announcer Bill Raftery is leaving the waters of ESPN for FOX Sports where he will serve as lead analyst for upcoming Big East coverage on FS1. Raftery will be teamed with Gus Johnson on regular-season and all Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament games televised on the upcoming network. Raftery will, however, maintain in his role as a lead analyst for men’s regular-season college basketball and NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament coverage on CBS. FOX Sports 1 is slated to televise over 100 conference men’s regular-season basketball games this coming season, with the non-conference schedule starting Friday, Nov. 8.

On the Air

Meanwhile, ESPN revealed that it had locked in college football analyst Kirk Herbstreit in a long-term deal that runs through 2022. Herbstreit will continue to call ABC’s Saturday Night Football package and make weekly appearances on ESPN shows that include ESPN College GameDay Built by The Home Depot and College Football Live. In addition, when the new College Football Playoff begins in 2015, he will call one National Semifinal and the National Championship Game each year.

Spike TV is expanding its roster to include kickboxing, announcing the addition of GLORY Sports International’s (GSI) brand of the sports starting this fall. The live action will see 2-hour events run in primetime on select Saturday nights from around the world as part of a multi-year partnership that was announced between the two companies.

Meanwhile, ESPN officially opened the doors to its annual ESPY Awards, which will be hosted by Jon Hamm this year. Voting is open for fans with nominees that include Drew Brees, Miguel Cabrera, Chicago Blackhawks, Gabby Douglas, Joe Flacco, Brittney Griner, LeBron James, Michael Phelps, Maria Sharapova, Mike Trout, Abby Wambach, and Serena Williams. PTI hosts Tony Kornheiser and Michael Wilbon will host The ESPY Nomination Special on Monday, July 1, at 8p on ESPN2. This year’s ceremonies are Presented by Capital One and associate sponsors that include 20th Century Fox, Asics, Beats by Dr. Dre, Depend, Gatorade, GMC, Hennessey V.S., Miller, Old Spice, Unilever Clear, VIZIO, and Xbox.

Univision Deportes laid out plans for the 2013 Spanish-language coverage of the CONCACAF Gold Cup with the action starting Sunday, July 7, with live coverage of Canada/Martinique, followed by Mexico/Panama, both airing on the Univision Network and Univision Deportes Network. Games continue throughout the month with the final match set to run on Univision and Univision Deportes Network on Sunday, July 28.

ESPN Films and espnW premiere the documentary Venus Vs. on July 2 at 8p. The special marks the first film in the upcoming Nine for IX series and spotlights Venus Williams’ challenging the long-held practice of paying women tennis players less money than their male counterparts at Wimbledon.

Turner Sports goes primetime with this weekend’s coverage of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series from Kentucky presented by KFC from Kentucky Speedway on Saturday, June 29, at 7:30p. Adam Alexander calls the race and hosts the pre-race show with analysts Kyle Petty, Wally Dallenbach and Larry McReynolds.

On the regional front, Comcast SportsNet Mid-Atlantic will premiere The 2013 Sea Trials, an original one-hour documentary on the U.S. Naval Academy’s annual Sea Trials training exercise for fourth class midshipmen (plebes), on Sunday, June 30, at 8p. The premiere of the special program, which will be presented with limited interruption, will also be available to military service members stationed overseas on American Forces Network.

Sponsorship & Promotion

Last night’s NBA Draft saw ESPN and State Farm lighting up Times Square with a live feed of the selections for the first time ever. The Draft was featured across three of the largest digital billboards in Times Square including: the ABC SuperSign, American Eagle Times Square, and the Disney Store’s Times Square Spectacular digital billboard. The live feed of the broadcast in Times Square was surrounded by State Farm branding, including creative featuring Chris Paul and Cliiff Paul, across a number of additional digital billboards in Times Square.

ESPN Regional Television and AdvoCare International announced a four-year title sponsorship of the Texas Kickoff. Starting this year, the event will officially be named the AdvoCare Texas Kickoff and will be featured on Labor Day weekend at Reliant Stadium in Houston. In the inaugural game, Mississippi State from the Southeastern Conference will face Oklahoma State from the Big 12 Conference on Saturday, August 31.

Puma officially ended its relationship with Aaron Hernandez, due to his arrest for murder charges, according to the AP. The two year deal was inked last April and was going to involve Hernandez with its men’s training program.

Digital Fields

NBC Sports Live Extra saw over 70 million minutes of the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs live streamed on desktops, mobile devices, and tablets, according to Adobe Site Catalyst. In addition, the NBC Sports Live Extra app, which was launched in August 2012, surpassed six million downloads on June 18. Overall, throughout the NHL Playoffs, 70,633,853 minutes were live streamed, up 577% compared to last season when 12 games were streamed, and up 2,159% vs. 2011. Those figures include the Stanley Cup Final, which was live streamed for the first time and posted 30,043,262 minutes.

Verizon FiOS added on-the-go capabilities for Time Warner Cable SportsNet and Time Warner Cable Deportes in Southern California, joining Time Warner Cable, DirecTV, Bright House Networks and Cox Communications. All network programming, including live Los Angeles Lakers, LA Galaxy and Los Angeles Sparks games, can be watched on the platform.

Roster Moves

Comcast SportsNet Northwest and the NBC Sports Group announced the appointment of Larry Eldridge as Vice President and General Manager for the regional sports network. Eldridge served as GM of Comcast SportsNet California and Fox Sports Net Pittsburgh over the last 12 years and will now oversee all aspects of the network’s operations, including live event coverage, regional news and analysis, original programming, finance, marketing and communications.

NBC Sports Group unveiled two new additions to their sales team, naming Jim Prendergast, Director of Sales, NBC Sports Ventures,and DanWeinberg, Director of Sales, NBC Sports Ventures. In their new roles, Prendergast and Weinberg will both focus on the revenue growth of the NBC Sports Ventures’ portfolio, which includes Alli Sports, the American Century Golf Championship, the PNC Father/Son Challenge and the Rugby Sevens Collegiate Championship.

Former SI.com writer Nick Zaccardi is now a scribe for NBC Olympics.com., where he will serve as the lead writer for Olympic Talk ahead of the company’s coverage of the 2014 Olympic Winter Games in Sochi, Russia. Zaccardi joins NBC Sports Group following stints with SI.com, MLB.com, and PGATour.com.
