Disney Channel puts two new original TV movies in development. The network id working on Lemonade Mouth 2, a sequel to this year’s Lemonade Mouth, and a new TV movie based on its live-action comedy series Shake It Up. This summer the new Disney Channel original movie Phineas and Ferb: Across the 2nds Dimension, based on its animated series Phineas and Ferb, will premiere on the network Friday, August 5, followed by its Disney XD debut on Saturday, August 13, and also on ABC (date TBD).

To help celebrate the Day of the African Child, the First Lady of Tanzania, Mama Salma Kikwete, launched Kilimani Sesame‘s Malaria Education Outreach Campaign, a collaborative effort between Sesame Workshop, the producers of Kilimani Sesame, WAMA and Malaria no More. The campaign includes four malaria prevention Public Service Announcements (PSAs) for TV and radio, in Swahili, which will air on Tanzania Broadcasting Corporation (TBC) and Clouds TV. The PSAs feature Kilimani Sesame’s Muppet Lulu as well as goodwill ambassadors, Banana Zoro, Marlaw, Mwasiti, and Bibi Natasha providing practical malaria prevention tips. Additionally, a supplemental storybook, Chandarua Salama (The Safe Net) in English and Swahili, will be distributed (15,800 copies) throughout to primary schools in Tanzania, as well as posters (10,000), underlining the messaging in the PSAs. The Kilimani Sesame PSAs and outreach materials are made possible through the support of Mattel and Freedom to Create.
Amulet Books, an imprint of Abrams, will release the next title in Jeff Kinney’s Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series on Tuesday, November 15, 2011. The new book, the sixth in the series, is titled Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Cabin Fever, and the cover will be ice blue in color and will have the largest printing of any title in the series to day, with 6+ million copies in the first printing. Cabin Fever finds the Heffley family housebound by a blizzard can they survive one another? Six summer “snowball” promotional events will be announced next month.
Scholastic unveils plans to publish a special gift edition of its super popular book The Hunger Games by author Suzanne Collins for holiday 2011. Three movie tie-in titles will release in early 2012, based on The Hunger Games feature film that is currently in production at Lionsgate and set for release on March 23, 2012. Scholastic will publish and deliver the books via all its distribution channels both domestically and internationally. Set for release in November 2011, The Hunger Games Collector’s Edition ($30) will include a special slipcase featuring exclusive new ‘mockingjay’ artwork. The three movie tie-in titles, all releasing in February 2012, will include The Hunger Games: Movie Tie-In Edition ($13), The Hunger Games: Official Illustrated Movie Companion ($19) and The World of The Hunger Games ($18), just ahead of the release of the much anticipated movie.
D3Publsiher, a publisher/developer of interactive software, and Nickelodeon enter into a worldwide publishing deal for video games based on the live-action TV series Victorious. Slated for holiday 2011, the first two game titles under the deal are Victorious: Time to Shine for Kinect for Xbox 360 and Victorious: Hollywood Arts Debut for the Nintendo DS. High Voltage Software is developing Victorious: Time to Shine and Behaviour Interactive is developing Victorious: Hollywood Arts Debut.
Spin Master and McDonald’s partner to feature the girl-targeted Liv fashion doll line in Happy Meals in North America. Beginning today through July 7, miniature Liv dolls (Daniela, Sophie, Katie, Alexis and Hayden) will be available in McDonald’s Happy Meals. Last month Spin Master and McDonald’s teamed for a Zoobles and Happy Meal promotion. The Liv and Zoobles Happy Meal campaigns are slated to hit international markets later this year and in 2012.
DCD Publishing, the UK licensing agent for Suzy’s Zoo, completes two new deals for the property with Blue Sky Books and with University Games on behalf of Suzy’s Zoo. Blue Sky Books will utilize the Little Suzy’s Zoo character set in their merchandise that will include illustrated kid’s books, which will be available throughout the UK in late 2011. University Games will feature the Suzy’s Zoo (aka Duckport) and Little Suzy’s Zoo character sets in its merchandise, which will include games (including board games, card games, travel games and electronic board games), color forms and jigsaw puzzles, which will be available around the world (excluding Japan) in late 2012.
Discovery Enterprises International (DEI), the international licensing and merchandise arm of Discovery Communications, completes its first global deal with Nukotoys for a series of Animal Planet interactive and connective games for K3-8. The games will include apps for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch devices, as well as next generation collectible trading cards. The new Animal Planet games are set to launch in fall 2011.
Zodiak Rights inks two new deals for animator Simon Tofield’s online property Simon’s Cat. Only 4 U Ltd acquires the rights to produce a range of Simon’s Cat products including tote bags, travel accessories, glassware and food storage for the UK. Products are set to launch on the high street from early 2012. Carte Blanche Greetings (Tatty Teddy and My Blue Nose Friends) adds Simon’s Cat to its plush range. The initial plush line will include plush and sound chip plush of various sizes and a mini key chain plush range, and is set to roll out from October 2011. Early this year a new Simon’s cat comic strip launched in the UK newspaper the Daily Mirror. Zodiak Rights is the international division of Zodiak Media Group.
Anchor Bay Entertainment sets up two cross-promotional campaigns for the DVD series of Ludorum‘s preschool CGI animated series Chuggington.
- Under a promotional deal with Joy Cone Ice Cream Cones, now through November 30, 2011, consumers who purchase any box of Joy Cone Ice Cream Cones and a Chuggington DVD from Anchor Bay (previous and upcoming releases), plus $2 shipping/handling, will receive two Chuggington books from Scholastic (The Chugger Championship and Wilson and the Ice Cream Fair). The deal will see Joy Cone featuring the promotion on one million packages of 60-count Kids Cones and 18-count Color Cups.
- In a promotion with Well-Pict Berries, which launches August 2011, consumers will have the opportunity to receive a $3 rebate check via mail when they purchase “It’s Training Time!” or other Chuggington DVD titles and a 1lb strawberry clamshell package from Well-Pict, which plans to feature the promotion with on-pack graphics of It’s Training Time on 12 million strawberry packages. Additionally, the new title will include a Well-Pict insert featuring a recipe for preschoolers and parents to prepare together.
